Stairway to memory: (Dis)continuity of place identity [STRAND, 2024]
Place identity is created through a continuous developmental journey, from place conceptualization to its present-day existence. This study delves into the intricate processes and interconnections among physical surroundings, societal dynamics, inhabitants, functions, and activities, all contributing to the distinctive identity of New Belgrade blocks 61, 62, 63, and 64. Research result is a diagram, i.e. a timeline in which we illustrate how these (physical spatial dynamics). The Research aim is to identify and categorize the factors that shape the unique identity of the observed place through drawing methods. This research is motivated by an appreciation for the multi-layered nature inherent in the phenomenon of genius loci
Short Studies in Tectonic Architecture: a Review on Postmodern and Contemporary Buildings
Tectonic architecture is a theory that Kenneth Frampton formulated in the 1990s. He stresses out importance of combining architecture and structure with a goal of creating meaningful architecture. This paper starts as a review of tectonic architecture through history and defines the foundation for analysing tectonic in postmodern and contemporary architecture. It is a short review of theories that define tectonic architecture. This paper reviews architectural discourse that assigns value to the structure of the building and its elements, a value such as “poetic” or “expressive”, and at the same time creates a foundation for analysis of the building design. Considering all those theories, it will be presented what is the tectonic in postmodern and contemporary architecture.
Afterward, a set of postmodern and contemporary architecture projects will be reviewed with the aim to show how structure plays an important poetic part in space and how the art of building depends on knowledge of spatial design and structural design at the same time. The architects of chosen projects are considered the masters of expressive architecture. They presented their ideology through the implementation of contemporary technology and special use of materials. Projects will show individual and unique actions in space and, at the same time, how technology creates spaces. Better said, knowing of sole material possibilities lets the architect create poetic spaces, as well as understanding technology processes and characteristics of the structure makes expressiveness emphasized. The architects whose projects are presented in this paper are well known for the use of structural elements and materials, and they built impressive careers out of it. At the same time, by their actions, they left artefacts in space creating context to learn from.
This paper aims to show what is the craft of architecture as art and engineering at the same time; but it also comes as a showcase of possibilities in the “act of building” as a complete process
Conceptual framework for mapping of urban patterns in spa settlements in Serbia: SPATTERN Project
Banjska naselja u Srbiji, poznata po svojim prirodnim lekovitim izvorima i
bogatom kulturnom nasleđu, predstavljaju jedinstvene urbane strukture koje
zahtevaju posebnu pažnju prilikom planiranja i razvoja. Ovaj rad predstavlja
konceptualni okvir za mapiranje urbanih obrazaca u ovim specifičnim sredinama,
koristeći savremene tehnologije i digitalne metode uvodeći kontekst naučnog
projekta SPATTERN (Future Heritage of Spa Settlements: Digital Platform for
Advancing Knowledge and Innovation in Urban Morphology Approach for
Environmentally Sensitive Development in Serbia) koji se realizuje u periodu od
2023-2026. godine u okviru programa PRIZMA Fonda za nauku Republike Srbije. Cilj
istraživanja je da se identifikuju ključni faktori koji utiču na urbanistički razvoj
banjskih naselja (12 uzornih modela banja i 26 replikatora) kroz dekodiranje i
mapiranje urbanih obrazaca kroz razumevanje geografskog položaja, istorijskog
razvoja, socio-ekonomskih uslova i ekoloških faktora. Predloženi okvir integriše
višeslojne podatke, uključujući planski i strateški okvir, arhivsku građu, prethodna
istraživanja i zapise terenskog istraživanja kako bi se stvorila sveobuhvatna digitalna
baza podataka. Ova baza će omogućiti detaljnu analizu trenutnih urbanih obrazaca i
identifikaciju potencijalnih pravaca razvoja, odnosno anticipaciju razvoja. Projekat
teži da osvetli operativni kapacitet digitalnog mapiranja za identifikaciju i
vizualizaciju kompleksnih urbanih obrazaca, što olakšava donošenje informisanih
odluka u procesu planiranja. Takođe, predloženi okvir može poslužiti kao alat za
monitoring promena u urbanom prostoru, omogućavajući pravovremenu reakciju
na eventualne negativne trendove, te zaštitu životne sredine i nasleđa. Predloženi
konceptualni okvir može poslužiti i kao model za slične studije u drugim regionima,
doprinosići održivom urbanom razvoju i poboljšanju kvaliteta života u ovim
specifičnim sredinama.Spa settlements in Serbia, known for their natural healing springs and
rich cultural heritage, represent unique urban structures that require special
attention during planning process and urban development. This contribution
presents a conceptual framework for mapping urban patterns in these specific
environments, using modern technologies and digital methods and it introduces
context of the scientific project SPATTERN (Future Heritage of Spa Settlements:
Digital Platform for Advancing Knowledge and Innovation in Urban Morphology
Approach for Environmentally Sensitive Development in Serbia) which is realized in
the period from 2023-2026 within the PRISM program of the Science Fund of the
Republic of Serbia. The overarching objective of the study is to identify the key
factors that influence the urban development of spa settlements (12 role models
and 26 replicators of spa settlements) through decoding and mapping of urban
patterns, understanding of geographic location, historical development, socioeconomic
conditions, and environmental factors. The proposed framework
integrates multi-layered data, including the planning and strategic framework,
archival material, previous research, and field research records to create a
comprehensive digital database. This database will enable a detailed analysis of
current urban patterns and the identification of potential development directions,
i.e. anticipation of development. The project aims to illuminate the operational
capacity of digital mapping to identify and visualize complex urban patterns,
facilitating informed decision-making in the planning process. Also, the proposed
framework could serve as a tool for monitoring changes in urban space, enabling a
timely reaction to possible negative trends, as well as the protection of the
environment and heritage. The proposed conceptual framework could also serve as
a model for similar studies in other regions, contributing to sustainable urban
development and improving the quality of life in these specific environments

Effects of involving different actors into the local level planning process
U dinamičnom savremenom okruženju kreiranje i sprovođenje efi kasnih politika održivog i integralnog urbanog razvoja je od ključnog značaja za obezbeđivanje prosperiteta i održivosti gradova. Strategija razvoja urbanog područja oblikuje putanju razvoja, obuhvatajući različite sektore kao što su: infrastruktura, privreda, životna sredina, kultura, usluge socijalne zaštite i dr. Složenost savremenih izazova zahteva kolaborativni pristup koji prevazilazi okvire lokalne administracije. Uključivanje partnera - različitih nivoa i sektora uprave, preduzeća, obrazovnih i istraživačkih organizacija, neprofi tnih organizacija, društvenih grupa i građana igra ključnu ulogu u formulisanju, praćenju i sprovođenju strategije. Iskustva na izradi Strategije razvoja urbanog područja grada Šapca tokom 2023. godine ukazuju na značaj uključivanja različitih aktera, njihovih viđenja, znanja i resursa u proces planiranja. Iako ne bez otpora, primenjeni participativni pristup je doprineo boljoj identifi kaciji problema, sagledavanju potreba, kreiranju vizije i odabiru strateških projekata koji reprezentuju lokalno specifi čni urbani identitet.In a dynamic modern environment, the creation and implementation of eff ective policies of sustainable and integral urban development is of key importance for ensuring the prosperity and sustainability of cities. The urban area development strategy shapes the path of development, including various sectors such as: infrastructure, economy, environment, culture, social protection services, etc. The complexity of contemporary challenges requires a collaborative approach that goes beyond the boundaries of local administration. The involvement of partners - diff erent levels and sectors of administration, companies, educational and research organizations, non-profi t organizations, social groups and citizens plays a key role in the formulation, monitoring and implementation of the strategy. Experiences in the development of the Strategy for the Development of the Urban Area of the City of Šabac in 2023 indicate the importance of including various actors, their views, knowledge and resources in the planning process. Although not without resistance, the applied participatory approach contributed to a better identifi cation of problems, understanding of needs, creation of a vision and selection of strategic projects that represent a locally specifi c urban identity

Shaping a better future: Contextual learning and teaching of structural design in the process of architectural education
This paper investigates an integrated approach to teaching structural design in architectural education at the University of Belgrade. It combines traditional lecture-based learning with team-based, contextual problem-solving in the final year of undergraduate studies. Survey data from 230 students indicate that early exposure to collaborative, project-based learning enhances critical and creative thinking, research and analysis skills, communication, teamwork, and motivation for independent learning. The study highlights the importance of contextual, interdisciplinary education for preparing future architects to meet the complex sustainability challenges of contemporary practice
Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Python Programming Language, in Architectural Geometry Based Form Generation [abstract]
In last couple of years, usage of artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely democratized. Many of very powerful AI tools are integrated into frequently used ICT services, while some completely new AI based applications appear on almost daily basis, and are very often freely available. The AECO sector (Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation) is not an exception. Some recent studies indicate that tens of applications supporting AECO are nowadays enriched with AI features. Many of them support the area of visualization, but there are also numerous attempts to contribute to the design and construction processes. In this paper we present the process of architectural form generation, performed in the Rhino 3D software, powered by Python programming language that serves for defining parametrized geometric structures. To define Python scripting, readable by Rhino 3D Python Editor, ChatGPT 3 chatbot has been professionally used. Highly benefiting from the ability of ChatGPT to combine mathematical knowledge and Python scripting, as well as to respond to textual programming requests, a series of complex geometric forms has been modelled and visually examined. Some of selected characteristic forms have been 3D printed. After a brief introduction of applied tools and concepts (Math + ChatGPT + Python + Rhino 3D + Grasshopper), we present the procedure used to obtain the operational Python scripts by leading AI through the process of parametric modelling. Since it is often not a straightforward way to get the results, some specific aspects of strongly controlled, purpose-driven usage of ChatGPT are given. The paper is illustrated by numerous characteristic examples, and the gained results of generated architectural form are discussed, including pro and cons of the explained procedure. The paper concludes with a discussion of the new technological skills requirements in contemporary architectural design
Shrinking and Non-Global Cities: Similarities and Differences
The concept of shrinking cities has become well-known among both scientists and practitioners
in urban planning and design. Basically, shrinking cities experience many downturn trends due to
structural problems in local economy. The most notorious trend is certainly population shrinkage,
by which the concept got this name two decades ago. The other ones, such as a brain drain, limited
employment opportunities or population ageing, are not less problematic for the future urban
prospects, too.
Nevertheless, the focus in the current research on shrinking cities has changed last decade. The overall
focus on the effects of deindustrialisation has slowly receded to other subtopics related to various
socio-economic constraints, such as relation between regional and urban shrinkage, suburbanisation
vs. central city development, spatial peripherality, etc. Many such new subtopics touch the huge
theme of globalisation and global cities, as well as connected topics of spatial networking, centrality,
and multi-layer connectivity. Interestingly, the opposite phenomenon – non-global cities – has not
been adequately addressed within it despite the most of cities globally belongs to this group.
This research is dedicated to explain the term of non-global cities as a new paradigm in urban studies
and tries to link it with the phenomenon of shrinking cities. The comparison of the tenets of shrinking
cities are compared with the general elements of non-global cities to fi nd the main similarities
and differences between them, enshrining additionally the phenomenon of non-global cities. The
conclusion of this research reveals that both of them, although present independent concepts,
overlap in the certain regional and typological contexts
Tensions of Urban Development in Post-Socialist City: the Case Study of Community –Based Initiatives for Preservation and Transformation of Open Public Space in Banjaluka
Fundamental institutional reforms, as well as changes in the political, economic and social system, are the cause of the very complex and dynamic urban development of post-socialist cities. The transition from the single-party socialist political system into the system of parliamentary democracy and the decentralization of public state institutions and administration led to a greater responsibility of the local community for the creation of urban policies and the financing of urban development programs. The reduced role of the state in the economic system, the established capitalist principles of private ownership and market-lead economy have significantly influenced changes in the management of urban development, which is mainly driven by short-term goals and private interests. In conditions where local communities have insufficient financial resources to implement public policies based on neo-liberal principles, the role of the private sector in urban development becomes dominant, and the needs of citizens are neglected, which is the cause of significant spatial-social urban problems. Due to the low level of involvement of civil society in the decision-making process of urban planning, which is only declarative, but also due to the non-transparency of the process itself, it is also evident that citizens are not interested in participating in planning of urban development. This often results in the emergence of urban resistance movements and non-acceptance of imposed planning solutions. Regarding this, the issue of social sustainability of the transformation of post-socialist cities and the strengthening of civil society has become increasingly prominent in the post-socialist research discourse.
This paper deals with the problem and impact of the "bottom-up" planning approach on the transformation of post-socialist cities. The aim of the paper is to point out the complexity of the process of post-socialist development of cities and to re-examine the role of civil society initiatives in the planning process of urban transformation. The paper presents a case study of the action of a civil initiative with the aim of preserving and transforming open public space in a residential area in the centre of Banjaluka. The presented example indicates the importance of informal and formal forms of self-organization of citizens for strengthening social inclusion, improvement of neighbourhood and preservation of public interest in the process of urban transformation. Finally, the example indicates the need to change the current planning approach and develop new planning tools aimed at achieving a higher level of citizen participation in the planning process and achievement of long-term social goals of the sustainability of the urban development of post-socialist Banjaluka
