Workcamp in Higher Education in Urbanism: experience from Danurb+ Building Camp for Students in Golubac, Serbia
Urban design belongs to the professional fi elds where public welfare is of great concern. This means
that common practice in urban design involves the various forms of the active participation of
different actors and stakeholders, positioning it as a signifi cant segment in the professional ethos of
urban designers. Hence, public participation is also one of the integral parts of higher education in
contemporary urban design.
Urban design curriculum usually has a few courses dedicated for participation as the core topic, while
other courses indirectly touch it. Their practical side is often in the form of public audits, surveys,
questionnaires, interviews, which students conduct as an on-site or online training with citizens,
experts and/or stakeholders. The form of a workcamp, where students-volunteers work and live
together with local community on a short-term basis and for a not-for-profi t cause, is rarer simply
because it is more demanding to be included into formal higher education. However, such workcamps
have many advantages related to learning about the participation process, such as democratic
awareness, mutual understanding, increased independence, and self-reliance.
This paper presents one building camp for students, organised within DANUrB+ INTERREG Project
in Golubac, Serbia, in June 2022. The aim of the camp was to realise, materialise a small scale
‘design and build’ urban project which connects with the revealed underused local heritage or cultural
potential, as a tangible implementation of an intangible potential. The paper intends to show how this
process involved both students and the local community to jointly develop, design and build a smallscale
public square in the Danube Riverfront of Golubac Town
Megaevents – afterlife: the issue of ephemeral transition [abstract]
U odnosu stalno
promenljivih relacija, razvoj urbanih teritorija generisan je različitim internim i
eksternim uticajima koji indukuju intenzivne i masovne tranzicije. Megadogađaj,
definiše fenomen kulturnih događaja velikih razmera, međunarodnog i
privremenog karaktera, koji zbog svog iznimnog obima zahteva značajnu podršku
infrastrukture i izgradnju prostornih struktura, najčešće u zoni periferije grada.
Privremeno redefinisanje pejzaža periferije, dovodi do rapidnog razvoja te
teritorije, efemerne tranzicije i indukovane centralizacije, odnosno ad hoc
efemernih tranzicija. Istraživanje bi analizirao relevantne primere projekata
generisanih u perifernim kontekstima gradova u svrhe megadogađaja, kroz
sagledavanje različitih pristupa planiranju takvih projekata, u vidu privremenih
paviljonskih struktura, ponovno upotrebljive infrastrukturne mreže ili tipoloških
transformacija izgrađenih prostora. Rad promatra integraciju odabranih primera u
V7: Reconstruction, adaptation, and interior design project of the city center duplex apartment [STRAND 2024]
V7: Reconstruction, adaptation, and interior design project of the city center duplex apartment
Location: Višegradska Street, Belgrade
Year: 2023.
Architects:
Dr Bojana Jerkovic-Babovic, M. Arch,
Branko Gulan, M. Arch
This is a project of the attic reuse with reconstruction and adaptation into living space - a duplex apartment in the old center of the city. The apartment was designed in a building that dates back to the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century, and the main idea of the project is that the space exudes the minimalism of the slow living concept. Therefore, the aesthetic is based on natural materials, mellow tones, and earthy colors. The lower level of the apartment has been adapted into a kitchen with a dining room, bathroom, and a large sleeping area, while the upper level, the attic, is an open space organizational concept, used for living and working areas

LEED i WELL sistemi i proces projektovanja
Spatial Forensics: Speech of Spatial Facts, Digital Investigative Methods, Proving, and Expert Argumentation
Predmet istraživanja studije je forenzička istraživačka metoda u polju integrativnog dejstva prostornih, arhitektonskih i urbanističkih dizajn studija i studija bezbednosti u širem sklopu društvenih studija. Inicijalno zasnovana kao umetnost argumentacije, forenzika u navedenom kontekstu poseduje specificitet govora dokaza inherentnih prostornim entitetima i praksama unutar čitavog spektra razmere od šireg gepolitičkog i astropolitičkog plana i prostornog domena do detalja dizajn objekata i njihove materije. Time u konceptima prostorne, urbane i arhitektonske forenzike pronalazimo argumentaciju prostornih, arhitektonskih i urbanističkih artefakata i entiteta unutar procedura dokazivanja za pravne i bezbednosne profesionalne okvire. The research subject of the study is the forensic research method observed within the integrative field of spatial, architectural and urban design studies and security studies. Initially considered an art of argumentation in public deliverance of proof, forensics in the defined context possesses specificity
of speech of the proofs inherent to spatial entities and practices regarding all spatial scales. Thus, in concepts of spatial, urban, and architectural forensics one finds argumentation of spatial entities within the proving procedures for legal and security frameworks. Within the three-part configuration that Weizman (2017) postulates as a basis of forensic architecture methodology, containing the following: 1) the investigated matter or object, which is made to speak, 2) the interpreter or analyst that translates the language of objects to people, and 3) translation, or the form, content, and way the results are resented to the public or an assembly where claims are made and contested, one recognises 1) the role of space
and spatial artefacts as material proofs themselves, as well as objects preserving proofs or their inscriptions, 2) the profession of spatial, architectural, and urban designers and analysts that are able to read and translate the speech of space and spatial artefacts, relying on expert skills to identify relevant facts, and 3) argumentation form—the expertise, professional assessment, or report that will be communicated, corresponding to the dissemination requirements and environment. The stability and disruptions of constitutive elements of the forensic proof triangle will be observed with the aim to theoretically investigate and apply the proposed method, supported by the proving procedure analysis and practice of issuance of an expert opinion. The paper will consider contemporary spatial (architectural and urban) designs and analyses that have contested security aspects, with the support of digital technologies and instruments as means of spatial data acquisition, analysis, processing, and proving
Today's traces of Belgrade Between Two World Wars: Milutin Borisavljević’s Disappearing Architectural Heritage [STRAND 2024]
Faced with contemporary environmental, social, political and economic challenges, architectural heritage of past centuries is the target of transformation and disappearance. The paper investigates the rapid disappearance of the architectural heritage created between the two World Wars on the example of the extremely large and valuable architectural work of the architect Milutin Borisavljević. Between 1927 and 1941, Milutin Borisavljević has built 123 buildings in Belgrade, of which 114 are examples of residential architecture that were made for private clients. Borisavljević's architectural oeuvre is recognized as a very valuable cultural heritage that inherits the principles of academicism - where the French Renaissance style and classicism prevail, respecting the principles of Borisavljević's scientific aesthetics of architecture - the original aesthetic theory conceived by Milutin Borisavljević in the twenties of the 20th century.
The main goal of the paper is to review the changes in the urban image of Belgrade today and in the time between the two World Wars - when Borisavljević built buildings at Neimar, Vračar, Stari grad, Senjak and Pašino brdo - forming authentic urban environments whose atmospheric essence still endures today.
The fact is that many of Borisavljević’s beautiful houses built in these urban areas were demolished under the pretext that they were dilapidated buildings (low-rise buildings), and in their place were built high-rise buildings because of the economic profitability. In the last twenty years, more than 30 Borisavljević’s building were demolished, while on the other hand, their aesthetic beauty was the main reason behind the purchase of these buildings by the private individuals and public companies that renovated the buildings, but often not in accordance with the cultural heritage protection measures, and also neglecting the principles Borisavljević's scientific aesthetics of architecture.
The paper discusses the irony and discrepancy of the ethical attitude of the architectural profession towards its historical cultural heritage, which is disappearing for various reasons, whether it is completely destroyed or transformed by the application of inadequate forms of reconstruction
Concept store MEZE\SLIVA [STRAND 2024]
The concept store MEZESLIVA is a specialized shop selling products from the Balkans, focusing on the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Renovating the ground floor with a mezzanine in a protected heritage building required subtle interventions without compromising the inherited values. The architectural concept draws inspiration from items and motifs found in traditional handicrafts from the "Ex YU" region, aiming to create an ambiance that encourages interaction of users in the contemporary era. The request was to design several micro ambiances to ensure various activities flow – displaying products and shopping, comfort areas for degustation, and ensuring flexibility to accommodate social gatherings for product promotions and/or exhibitions of artists from various disciplines.Photo credits: MaxNova Creativ
Towards the sustainable urban green spaces: Increasing health and well-being
Considering the current global issues such as population growth and pandemics,
health has become one of the crucial resources in cities, and there has been an increasing
interest in research regarding the influence of the urban environment on public
health. These issues are tackled even in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG s),
directly in SDG 3, which is focused on good health and well-being, and indirectly in
SDG 9, SDG 18 and others. As world urbanization is increasing, there is pressure on
local governments to provide healthier cities and neighbourhoods and the well-being
of their citizens, e.g. by using tools such as placemaking. Well-being and a healthy environment
are closely connected with the overall quality of life as well as physical and
mental health. A “healthy city” is the one that creates and improves its physical and
social environments that allow people to support each other in every aspect of life. The
qualities that urban green spaces should possess are comfort, security, accessibility,
attractiveness, liveability and identity, as well as capacity, maintenance, connectivity
and distribution. The “15-minute city” is a rather important urban concept that also
strongly relies on the open greenery in the city. The main aim of this chapter is to

Urban Planning of the Wider Area of the Sava River in Belgrade - Sustainable Development of Uncontrolled Growth?
The general planning goals, such as sustainable development, social well-being, adaptation to climate change and the rational use of resources and goods, are only achieved with clear criteria and indicators for evaluating planning solutions, as well as for monitoring and evaluation of their implementation. Although the Serbian laws do not prescribe an exact procedure for monitoring and evaluation in urban planning, they require the presentation of the basic urban indicators in the preparation of plans, such as land-use balances, construction capacities, estimated number of inhabitants and users, volume of buildings, green areas, etc. The paper researches the adopted
detailed planning solutions and those that are being developed in the wider area of the Sava River, relating to complete urban transformations. The research includes 14 plans, with a total area of about 540 ha. The basic urban indicators that are defined in the plans are analyzed and their summary is given. The goal of the research is to observe the trends related to the intensity of construction, the share of public uses and public areas, the future physical structure, the relationship to public goods, housing standards, etc., as well as to open issues related to the sustainable urban development of Belgrade
