Cities in Serbia after the census 2022: redevelopment thorugh urban shrinkage!?
Danira Sovilj - Intro&Extro, Galerija Singidunum [samostalna izložba, 2024]
Play, Flowers, and Salt
Graph-Based Problem-Solving and Representation: Levels of Deployment in Computational Design Process
The paper addresses the question of the deployment of ‘dependency graph’-based problem-solving and representation methods. The question is observed in terms of decomposition levels of the computational design process and the subject of computation, or graph representation and modelling. Based on the stated criteria that firstly distinguish process graphs from object-based or formally congruent graphs, and secondly identify sublevels within the formed classes, the paper explains 1. two levels of the first group (1a. the level of a complete design problem-solving algorithm (metalevel process propagation graphs) and 1b. the level of smaller problem-solving clusters of methods (specific operations graphs, or sequential process propagation graphs)) and 2. specificities of the second group at the level of content that is to be modelled as a graph (subject-based graphs, including formal network-graph congruency). The importance of determining deployment levels has been recognised in the need to clarify, in a systematised way, the graphs' use, pursuing elaboration of each application level’s scope or problem-solving coverage, and complexity considering the subject of analysis and representation. The study supports the aim of developing new and optimised process workflows and better informed conduct when approaching computational design problems and tasks, leading to a higher standard of performance at each scale and construction/design stage of the computational problem-solving path and representation.
In that respect, the stated arguments are supported by the examples drawn from the experimental case of dependency (network and navigation) graph application in the field of architectural and urban computing, defined and tested in Grasshopper. The structure and results of the thereby created graphs, based on the investigated subjects of transportation infrastructure design and analytics, dynamic localisation, and pathfinding, are parsed in a way that best corresponds to the intended instructional explanation. The case study provides supporting evidence in the form of graph-based workflows and formal geometric outputs resulting from their propagation – i.e., it supplements arguments diagrammatically and provides illustrations of the stated points
Topological Deformability in Architecture, or How to Learn About Differences
The main question of this paper is related to whether and in what way
we understand the notion of topological deformability, which appears in numer-
ous texts of architectural theory from the beginning of the 1990s until today. In
general, the paper deals with the problem of the denotation of concepts from other
scientific fields, and shows how the architectural discourse changes the meaning
of a mathematical concept, determining it within its own discipline. The transition
of the term topological deformability is set as an example of how architecture
uses and improves its inherent interdisciplinary dimension, as well as an example
of how the way we research in architecture could make a tangible social impact.
The first part of this paper will focus on introducing and analyzing the concept
of topological deformability and its transition from mathematics to architectural
theory.
In the second part, it will examine how, through different theoretical
approaches, the term topological deformability influences the transformation of the
thinking modality in architecture, and how it traces the narrow path through archi-
tectures’ knowledge toward the wider audience. Therefore, architecture’s domi-
nant as an instrument of plural social reality will be emphasized. The research
will show how the term topological deformability through architecture opened
the way to changing the idea of otherness, leading to the essential acceptance of
differences.Included in the following conference series:

A conceptual framework for positioning the architect within a continual digital approach to designing architecture: The “Digital Chain” case
Studying the development of digital technology in architecture during the last thirty years highlights the opportunity for exploring the process of positioning the architect within an architectural approach based on the continual digital data-driven design and realization, using the example of the “digital chain” principle. Digital tools and processes have evolved driven by technological advancements and supporting the architectural design, but also challenging the influence and role of the architect as designer.
Accordingly, the positioning of the architect within the design and realization of architecture is a process that constantly is developing, evolving, progressing and changing, but not simultaneously with the development of technology. The paper investigates this with the focus on the “digital chain”, which is the continual approach that links architectural design and realization by coding the process and involving digital fabrication (machine and material) and the architect in each step of architectural accomplishments.
Methodologically, this research is based on overlapping the information of a (rapid) review of the continual digital data-driven design principle (example of “digital chain”) over time and the conventional (analog) design focused both on architect’s discourse, role and influence in the current and future design and implementation of works of architecture. The paper does not define the exact position of the architect in the “digital chain” because the process is further evolving and also depends on the type of fabrication, taking into account the freedom of choice of the architect. It does, however, identify the zone and type of influence of the process effects on the architect, and determines the necessity and role of the architect as a designer in the process.
The work aims to define and outline the currently developing conceptual framework of the positioning of architects, while a precise definition of the position would hinder the architect from expressing creativity. However, new research directions open a scientific field of constant redefinition of the design process with architectural influence in terms of activities and characteristics of the role of the architect within continual digital approaches to designing architecture.
OnLine-Firs
Budva Horizon – competition for the design of the promenade in the Budva Bay [46th Salon of Architecture, 2024]
The development of the architectural-urban solution starts from the analysis of the existing state of the spatial framework of the intervention (in accordance with the competition conditions), on the basis of which six narratives are formulated, and further illustrated through the presentation of the spatial reality
(analysis of existing state) and spatial possibility (diagramming of potentials for future transformation). On the basis of contextual research and formulated narratives, the design framework was defined, which consists of: programming matrix, typology of pavilions and spatial articulation of program determinants.
The architectural-urban proposal is characterized by an environmentally sensitive approach that respects environmental conditions, as well as prescribed urban parameters for four specific ambient units, but is also reflected in the creation of а colourful spectrum of activities in the space, and different scenarios in relation to the position and character of individual typologiesКонсултант: Ајвор Самуелс (Ivor Samuels)

Sempre Libera: Making Spaces for the Repositioning of Marginalized Individuals and Social Groups
The paper aims to show how architecture can both reflect and challenge societal perceptions of gender and class on the example of intricate interplay between spatial organisation and set design in the function of portrayal of marginalized social groups in opera. By analysing the architecture of spaces created by scenic design in contemporary opera productions, study investigates the position of women, particularly those depicted as sex workers, with a specific focus on contrasting performances of Verdi’s La Traviata. Violetta Valéry’s character, fluctuating to the modern times since the 19th century, serves as a poignant example for both a loving woman who has gone astray or someone who is not willing to let go of her courtesan past and accept the fragility of being in love. Analysing this interpretational duality through the modalities of architectural response in bringing visionary opera staging (Regieoper) concepts to reality, this study seeks to elucidate how the architecture itself reflects societal attitudes. By highlighting various aspects of Violetta's character, productions selected for this case study have the potential to cast a fresh perspective on familiar plots and amplify messages that were maybe previously left unnoticed. Ultimately, this research aims to emphasize the potency of architectural atmospheres in visual storytelling and shaping our perceptions of marginalized individuals, all while underscoring the potential for theatrical productions to serve as platforms for social critique and catalysts for change
From Territorial Focus to Urban Identity - the Case of Territorial Strategies in Serbia [predavanje po pozivu]
After the adoption of the first national urban policy of Serbia in 2019, territorial strategies for urban areas were developed within the technical support of the European Union Program for Local Development (EU PRO Plus). These strategies were established through a communicative process during 2022-2023, encouraging collaborative governance. These are contemporary governance instruments, which are an effective tool for the integration of priority investments, thematic goals and different sources of funding within the territory. Territorial strategies are focused on the economic, ecological, climatic, social, cultural and demographic challenges of territorial development. The main contribution of this research is providing an understanding of the challenges and potentials of the spatial dimension of strategies in the collaborative urban governance. The research should explore the development of urban identity within the process of local policy formation. The research sample consists of twelve strategies, namely specific goals, measures and strategic project ideas. Place-based approach supports the development of specific locations, adapting interventions and investments to unique spatial contexts, with the intention of
releasing their underutilized potential. Place-based concept and co-creative process are used in this work as a basic framework for evaluating the development of urban identity
Serbian Cities after the Population Census 2022 The Sprawl of Urban Shrinkage from Borderland to Inner Peripheries
The latest national population census in 2022 revealed that almost 90% of 167 urban settlements in Serbia were demographic shrinking. This is even a more negative results that from the previous census in 2011, when 74% of them were shrinking ones. Practically, all urban settlements in Serbia outside Belgrade and Novi Sad metropolitan areas, plus several booming tourist destinations, are losing population due to weak socio-economic performance. It also means that spatial and urban planning based just on a “growth/shrinkage” dichotomy cannot be simply applied as such. Hence, this study aims interlinking the demographic data from the census 2022 with the other characteristics of Serbian cities, such as their location, size, regional organisation and administrative status, to interpret the patterns of demographic shrinkage. The main patterns extracted from the census 2011 was the centre-periphery difference between the main corridor with three key cities in Serbia – Novi Sad, Belgrade and Niš – and urban fringe along national borders. The results from the census 2022 shows a more complex patterns of urban shrinkage, which implies that the formation of new urban clusters is necessary in addressing this currently main challenge in Serbian urbanisation
