    Integrated design in the process of architectural education

    Integrated design represents a contemporary approach of conceiving and development of building projects. It is defined as a design which results in buildings that successfully perform their function, in accordance with all aspects of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. The key issues to be considered during the design are related to the environmental protection, with special emphasis on harmful emissions, energy efficiency and materials and waste, as well as to the social benefits for building users, with special emphasis on protection and safety, comfort, spatial organization, space adaptability, maintenance and visual stimulation. This approach implies that different disciplines are involved in the decision-making from the very beginning of design process, with the idea to respond to the increasingly complex requirements. The paper discusses the innovative educational model, partially applied within the studies of architecture at University of Belgrade, which should address this new reality. Whereas integrated design requires system thinking and continuous interaction of all participants in the design process, research strategies that cross the boundaries of individual disciplines are applied. The learning is based on the integration of the theoretical knowledge in the field of architecture and engineering in function of problem-solving. It implies a holistic view on the design, within which education, research and practice are integrated into a single process that encourages critical thinking directed to multidisciplinary optimization of design solutions. The basic elements of the discussed educational model are presented in this paper, as well as its potential and limitations

    Creative city challeging concept "all for one - one for all"

    Culture and creativity are today integrated in cities everyday life, as part of official strategies or as action of group of artists and people working in cultural and creative industry. Culture and creativity are part of many concepts of urban development promoted as an acceptable response to the challenges of globalisation. If we speak of Cultural, Creative, Inclusive, Smart, Cognitive city, or any other similar concept, it is always about creating better conditions for living and creativity. Creative cities are based on communication, social networks, technology, with principles of adaptability, synergy and inclusion. As any paradigm, creative cities are challenged on many levels, in theory and in practice. It should be considered as wary important that use of culture and creativity as resource can have significant impact on society. Some arguments for and against creative cities will be presented in this paper, especially according its influence on the public space, individual rights and inclusion.     Innovative approaches in the process of re-integration of city and village

    Disintegration processes of town and country are in the final phase at almost all global territories both in developing and developed countries. The implication of these complex and multileveled processes of disintegration are manifesting in two main streams: ����� Depopulation of rural areas, ����� Overpopulation of town and cities, These streams have the most negative effects in devastation of rural areas causing constant unbalance in space at local and global level. The time have come to oppose these processes of disintegration in the manner of stopping the negative trends and creating re-integrative processes and strategies in between urban and rural areas. This is the only way of balancing these two opposite processes of urbanisation and de-ruralisation, through renewal of balanced development between town and country. This kind of renewal means integration of rural and urban values and spaces into the strategies of integrative territories in which we have to introduce innovative programmes and plans that will accost country to town and vice versa consigning one to another in the way of mixing the mutual values and advantages. This approach needs reprograming both rural and urban codes and modules aiming to recognize methodical and model routes towards forming innovative programmes, scenarios, concepts, strategies, and action plans in order to reactivate and renew rural areas in function of forming integrative connection with urban areas

    Process of making the hearth of the neighbourhood: from analogue to digital public space design

    We are living in a period where communities and individuals have the chance to operate more directly in the city, and present their own opinions and proposals on how the city can be developed and designed in accordance with their needs and expectations. This period is also characterised by change in the general approach to the city as self-organised system that is free from the division of bottom and top urban players. This has led to the creation of a new, open and collaborative city-making method called “urban gaming”. On the one hand, the game is a laboratory for “understanding and strategizing” and on the other it is assumed as a ‘generative’ method. This tool could also be seen as an interface for the creation of knowledge and negotiation in the abstract decision-making process and material construction of the city. The game itself can be designed depending on the specific situation and scale to achieve more sustainable plans and proposals. Due to its complexity and the specificity of urban problems, urban game may use analogue as well as digital techniques. To illustrate this contemporary tool, the present paper will use the experience of the urban gaming process that was held in Belgrade. The game was created and implemented to develop a local public space, based on the neighbourhood initiative addressed to the representatives of the local government of the City of Belgrade. In this case study, seen as an urban experiment, special attention is placed on the different phases of the process, the results that have been achieved, as well as the use of analogue and digital tools during the application of the method

    Referring to Klaus Mainzer’s theory and interpretation of the move from symmetry toward complexity (Mainzer, 2005) and his explanation of complexity theory through frameworks of various scientific disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics and social sciences, computer science, philosophy, and arts) while not neglecting the extension of the theory's influences on large number of matters covered by research in nonlinearity principles, a distinctive view on the complexity theory application in architecture has been problematised as a specific subject of scientific interest. The problem of embedding or engaging time and change, transformation, shifting scales, multiplicity of views, programs/scenarios, and forms, interactivity, inner reconfiguration, and self-constructing capacities in architectural systems and architectural design, implies a specific form of application of the theory of dynamics and complexity theory; it refers to architectural strategies of control and skilful articulation of dynamic and complex features. Following systems theory, theory of complexity and chaos, dynamic systems theory, and design intelligence strategies (Ciric) as ways of articulating multiple data diagrammatically in architecture and its extended field of research, the paper deals with problems of architectural interpretation of the stated theories through different studies and research projects

Istraživanje paralelno ispituje konvencionalne pristupe projektovanja stambene arhitekture koji su doveli do njene funkcionalne predefinisanosti, kao i fizičkih karakteristika objekta arhitekture koje prevazilaze potrebe inicijalno projektovanog trajanja programa. Ove dve pozicije smeštaju arhitekturu između dva vremena; između trenutnih potreba i anticipacije onoga što će se desiti, konstruktu o budućnosti.     A model of the preventive restoration of architectural structures by steel and glass

    The paper proposes a design concept of seismic resistant architectural structures by using unconventional materials- laminated glass and laminated klirit, materials that are not usually used in construction design for thar purpose, although being widespread and easily available, and therefore defined as unconventional, with the goal of the preventive restoration. In the proposed design concept, laminated glass and laminated klirit are considered as a filling in a steel frame on which they overlap by the intermediate rubber layer, thereby forming a composite assembly. In this way, vertical elements of stiffening are formed, capable for reception of seismic force and integrated into the structural system of the building. The applicability of such a system was verified by experiments in laboratory conditions where the experimental models based on laminated glass and laminated klirit had benn exposed to the cyclic loads that simulate the sesmic force. In this way, the load capacity of composite assemblies was tasted for the effects of dynamic load that was parallel to assembly plane

    Non - destructive testing of wood structures by X -rays

    This work examines the possibility of detecting the waek points of wood structure assembly by non-destructive methods and restoring it, in a timely manner, before it comes to visible damaging. This is purpose of using X-ray examination for the sample of three types of wood: ring-porous deciduous, diffuse porous deciduous and conifers. The hypothesis was that the permeability of wood to X-ray radiation was inversely proportional to the coefficient of static resistance of wood. The mechanical properties of wood sample used in this work are approximates of their table values of coefficient of static bending stress expressed in MPs. In proving these hypotheses, X-ray machine was used, with a range of work from 40-125 kV and 0.50=360 m A/s, the same as its usage in humane medicine. This work showed that by X-rays we could successfully establish quality properties of certain types of wood and by that its best usage, which is, for example, of special interest for restoration and reconstruction of objects of cultural and historical value. Non-destructive methods of testing wood structure assembly certainly justify their role in that field and they require further research and development

    Healthy urban environment and design : the outdoor spaces

    The paper discusses the evolution of the concept of health and its relationship with the urban environment and design, starting from the first phase (1997) of the initiative of World Health Organization Regional Office of Europe ‘Healthy Urban Planning’. At the same time, the paper focuses on the evolution of the debate at European level and internationally produced initiatives and documents. “Healthy urban planning means planning for people. It promotes the idea that the city is much more than buildings, streets and open spaces, but a living, breathing organism, the health of which is closely linked to that of its citizens” (Barton and Tsourou, 2000). According with this concept, the Zagreb declaration (2009) has defined that “A healthy city offers a physical and built environment that supports health, recreation and well-being, safety, social interaction, easy mobility, a sense of pride and cultural identity and is accessible to the needs of all its citizens”. The urban planners and the architects plays a strategic role in delivering those requirements. In these frameworks at European and at International level, the paper highlights the themes and actions of the urban planner and architect discussing examples of best practices related to open spaces. Such spaces are in fact identified and represent one of the areas of action for sustainable regeneration of cities and the activation of proactive health projects which are becoming 'common goods'

    Cerak Vinogradi: spatial framing, user interventions and the socialist big other

    This article investigates Cerak Vinogradi housing estate (Darko Marušić, Milenija Marušić and Nedeljko Borovnica, 1977-1988), moving through a string of relevant factors: from the chief principles of the housing policy, the urban and architectural design of the estate and the dynamics of its construction, to the contacts between the architects and residents, and the latter’s informal interventions. We approach these factors by referring to the highly popular 1980 TV series Vruć vetar, with the series acting as a valuable insight into the social and spatial patterns of ex-Yugoslavia. We use the series to demonstrate how Cerak Vinogradi were the result of tension existing between two frames: the first defined through urban and architectural design and unsuccessfully defended by the architects, and the second which involved deficiencies in construction and apartment space, inciting in turn the user interventions. Demonstrating all the alienation the housing policy of the day resulted in, we treat the informal interventions not as a response to the invisibility of users but as a supplement to this very same policy. Referring to the Lacanian theory of socio-symbolic order (the ‘big Other’), we interpret the user interventions as a crucial part of the existing order, placing them in the context of the cynical logic of self-management socialism
