The urban environment is a complex system of physical and functional structure, human interrelations and inherited values that define the identity of the city. Mentioned elements are in constant mutual interaction, therefore the complex attributes of one territory can be defined by mapping methods that consider elements of uniform ambient values in the urban structure. The aim of this paper is to identify specific ambiental unities of Belgrade that represent the potential for development of contemporary cultural fluidity, while preserving the cultural heritage of the city. By examining the applicability of general mapping methods to the city of Belgrade, the aspects of psychogeographical mapping techniques are defined in a specific local context. Contemporary environmental experience is built on the basis of functional, perceptual and symbolic meanings of architecture in a particular context. The research result is an environmental mapping methodology that illustrates and emphasises the relation between the internal and external representation of space through user’s sensual experience; its verification within the layered contextual structure of Belgrade gives the potential for method objectification and further use in different contexts

The orthogonal urban matrix of the towns in Vojvodina, Northern Serbia: Genesis and transformation

    No full text
The subject of the chapter is the transformation of the urban matrix in the Northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. Being placed at the crossroads of important trans- European corridors, this territory in Southern Pannonia has always been exposed to various influences and shifts of power, which have left a significant mark on their urban matrix. The most prominent period was certainly Habsburgs' rule in Southern Pannonia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which radically reshaped inherited organic medieval-oriental matrix into planned, orthogonal regulation. This, Habsburg legacy has influenced the urban development of these towns until today. The aim of this chapter is to present the outcome of Habsburg urban regulation and accompanied orthogonal imprint in four towns, selected as case studies. The previous periods, as well as the recent challenges, are also considered. In the conclusion, the uniqueness and identity of these towns is discussed, regarding the morphing and transformations of their urban patterns during the selected periods

The phenomenon of shrinking illegal suburbs in Serbia: Can the concept of shrinking cities be useful for their upgrading?

    No full text
Illegal residential construction at the fringes of urban areas has been typical for Serbia and the other countries of South Eastern and Southern Europe, spanning through all periods of modern urbanisation. Illegal suburbs are currently so widespread that they cannot be omitted in any future policy or strategy regarding urban development and planning, land and property management. However, this phenomenon is being transformed over the recent years; after rapid and uncontrolled suburbanisation during the second half of the 20th century, the first shrinking outer suburbs around Serbian cities have appeared recently, with the post-socialist transition of the country. Yet, even more suburbs are in demographic and economic stagnation, emphasising the necessity to tackle it in the near future. This paper aims to open the debate about the future of illegal residential settlements with shrinking and stagnation patterns in Serbia, connecting this phenomenon with the concept of shrinking cities. Despite this concept being well-known, it is traditionally more oriented towards urban decline in well-developed and organised countries, where it deals with shrinking inner urban areas. Confronting the existing knowledge from the concept with the problems that shrinking outer suburbs in Serbia are facing today, this paper seeks to revise and adjust it by proposing the creative institutional changes for these vulnerable areas that simplify legalisation procedures, better integrate involved stakeholders, connect different spatial levels to form a polycentric network, and support bottom-up initiatives for the socio-economic regeneration of illegal suburbia. Institutional changes can be important for understanding and dealing with expected urban shrinkage in the less developed part of the world, such as in the Global South and fast-developing countries in Eastern Asia, where the problems of illegal suburbia are acute, but which certainly can expect urban shrinkage in the future

The 1923 Belgrade Master Plan - historic town modernization

    No full text
The paper analyses the 1923 Belgrade Master Plan's preparation and implementation process, a significant moment in Belgrade's political and urban history when, after the First World War, the city lost its centuries-long border position, becoming the capital of a newly established extended country, the Kingdom SHS, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The goal of government and city authorities was to create a representative national capital and overcome the city's existential and functional problems. Crucial to the process was the Association of Serbian Architects and Engineers' organization of an international competition in 1921-1922. Twenty-two projects were submitted, from Vienna, Paris, Budapest, Berlin, Zurich, Prague, etc. First prize was not awarded, but 18 were rewarded and purchased. These represented the basis for creating a final plan, supervised by G. P. Kovalevsky. The 1923 Master Plan introduced very innovative and modern approaches to solving the city's problems and improving residential areas, traffic, and greenery. The paper discusses the plan's realization, its extensive changes and partial implementation, which greatly influenced later city development. Despite obstacles, the plan initiated some important and progressive ideas whose impact was vital for the functional transformation of the city and its realization represents Belgrade's modern urban heritage

Possible roles of architeciural drawing within ihe study of living space are presented by discussing ihe dynamics of space partition...

Cultural landscape of ancient Viminacium and modern Kostolac – creation of a new approach to the preservation and presentation of its archaeological and industrial heritage

Viminacium, once an important Roman city and a legionary fortress near the Danube, situated in the villages of Stari Kostolac and Drmno, in Serbia, near a strip coal mine and a power plant, today is the most developed archaeological park in Serbia and is visited by many tourists. However, the future sustainable development of the wider area requires the creation of a more comprehensive approach to the presentation of its archaeological and industrial heritage, connecting Viminacium and other historical traces into a cultural landscape where industrial progress, heritage preservation and modern tourism are linked

Application of BIM technology in the processes of documenting heritage buildings

    Get PDF
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is present for more than two decades in domain of new build construction, and is already gaining certain levels of maturity. In the centre of this technology stands a 3D model, consisting of intelligent objects, as an infrastructure for all non-geometric information. Theoretically the model is accessible to all participants of the processes of building conception, design, construction and use, until the end of its life cycle. In domain of built heritage, however, BIM is still a new technology that needs to be tested and examined on various examples, from different points of view. In this study we are focused on selected cases from international practice, in which BIM has been applied in heritage domain with aim to examine the technology, its usefulness and various purposes of its application. The three analysed cases (Harmondsworth Barn, Manchester Town House Restoration and Sydney Opera House) are selected by diversity, searching for different building sizes, significance, chronologic appearance and functionality, as well as by BIM application purposes. All of the selected cases of BIM application are part of wider research projects financed by either government agencies, ministries or city councils. Methodologically this study is based on the analysis and comparison of the contents of detailed research reports accompanying each of the considered cases. After giving a general introduction of BIM technology, in this paper we are highlighting some specificities of BIM application for the heritage buildings and places. The paper proceeds with brief analyses of each of the three cases, than a comparison of initial data and the main findings. After that, a discussion of possible generalization of the main findings is given. The paper concludes with a set of general directions for the possible BIM technology application in domain of built heritage

    Get PDF
Over fifty years since the death of architect Nikola Dobrović (18971967), his rich architectural practice has prompted a number of serious historical and scientific researches. In one of the first detailed studies, in an article entitled 'Nikola Dobrović or On the Increase With Time', nine key principles of Dobrović's architecture have been distinguished in a summary of previous studies. This paper is conceived as an imaginary dialogue with the author of the study, Ranko Radović (19352005), who was also an excellent architect and urbanist, professor and theoretician of contemporary architecture, as well as Dobrović's student and collaborator. Considering results of more recent researches, this work seeks to document and critically observe Radović's early insights and interpretations. Also, it aims to acknowledge, once again, yet from a new historical perspective, the value of Dobrović's 'messages and news, words and ideas, drawings and buildings, 'proper' space that is always part of the world' - as Radović has precisely pointed out.U periodu od pedeset godina, koliko je prošlo od smrti arhitekte Nikole Dobrovića (1897-1967), o njegovom bogatom projektantskom opusu preduzeto je niz ozbiljnih istoriografskih i naučnih istraživanja.
