Informality and cultural landscape in Belgrade Riverside
By considering regulations defined by laws, plans and decisions on different levels related to urban development of Belgrade riverside, specific conditions of privatization of land, changes in legislation and insufficiently defined planning procedures have been recognized, which reflect the informal practice of land use development. The example of such coastal areas can be found along the Sava and Danube riverside, including the illegal appropriation of the aquatory, which are regarded in this research as a specific practice of creating a unique cultural landscape. This practice reflects a spontaneous urban development of the riverside through the formal and informal establishment of temporary and permanent housing, numerous commercial and recreational activities in different scale along the 200km of Belgrade riverbank. The shaping of the cultural landscape of Belgrade riverside will be analyzed through the comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to the ongoing riverside urbanization, which manifest the complex linkage between formal institutions, and members of the local community. The importance of closer examination of cultural, economic, environmental and spatial aspects of this process is in the recognition of indigenous building regulations and relations to the natural resources. The main goal of the research is to understand different levels on which this informal practice persists and to outline the possibilities for the improvement of the current planning of Belgrade riverbank through their institutionalisation
tri karakteristična pola: čoveka – korisnika, zgrade i okoline.
Danas smo
zaintrigirani ponašanjem zgrade kao sistema, uglavnom kroz prizmu količine energije
koju troši tokom svog postojanja. S jedne strane, to nas dovodi do potrebe za adekvatnim
poznavanjem osnovnih principa fizike zgrade, a, s druge strane, do spoznaje o relevantnim
osobinama materijala koje koristimo u procesu izgradnje kako bismo zadovoljili zahteve
komfora korisnika.
(toplotnog, vazdušnog, zvučnog i svetlosnog)

Predgovor
Preface
This book completes in a certain way a long-term research that was specifically focused on the study of architectural heritage, primarily its material aspect. As a result of fortunate circumstances, during postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, I was able to participate in archaeological excavations and to come in direct contact with the architectural and archaeological heritage of ancient Rome, which has directed my later research towards the late antique architecture from our area. Expressed interest in historical structures, materials and building techniques had its continuity in the study of the characteristics of late antique architecture from this area, first through the master thesis that was focused on the characteristics of structures and building techniques in the Late Antiquity in the area encountered, and then through the doctoral thesis which is the backbone of this monograph, which, as the immediate object of research, dealt with late antique bricks from the Central Balkan provinces as one of the basic materials of the given time and space.
During the research work, I had great assistance and support from my professors, as well as numerous colleagues with whom I collaborated in all stages and segments of the research, for which I am extremely grateful to them. The research process through which I passed enabled me to understand the significance and role of different methods and techniques of research, to connect different discourses of research, and thus gain a completely new view of the world of architecture, which in my pedagogical work I strive to transfer to students of architecture.
I extend my appreciation to the reviewers of the book, Prof. Dr Milica Jovanović Popović, Prof. Dr Nađa Kurtović Folić and Prof. Dr Dragica Jevtić for their comments and suggestions that have contributed to the quality of the initial manuscript. I also thank Dr Aleksa Bjelović for creating the visual identity of the book. I owe a special gratitude to Dr Vojislav Aranđelović for the translation of the book into English, which made it available to a much wider audience.
On the research path I had, I always had the unreserved support, patience and love of my family to whom I dedicate this book
Primena Veberovih fokalno-direktrisnih ravanskih krivih u aproksimaciji konturne krive osnove arhitektonskih objekata
One of the major aims when researching some problems in architectural design of buildings is to fully understand and adequately apply the underlying scientific foundations that architects use in their projects. In this paper we analyze the application possibilities of the Weber's focal-directorial curves in the approximation of ground-base contour line of architectural objects i.e. buildings. Thus, a Weber's curve with m foci and n directrices was defined. Furthermore, particular qualifiers were introduced in order to estimate the level of adequacy of the conducted approximation. The importance of the research can be sought in the fact that the exact procedure has been created with its applicability in architectural-urban design of contemporary forms as well as in the domain of the historical heritage and conservation in the sense of the creating proper geometrical models for further computer aided use.
Semiotics and urban culture: architectural projections of structuralism in a socialist context
The paper studies the relations between architecture, urbanism and structural anthropology, and makes a contribution to the interpretation of how the architects of former Yugoslavia translated structuralism into architectural theory and practice as a means of reading and shaping Yugoslav culture in the context of radical socio-political change. In striving for freedom of opinion, expression, communication and action, and autonomy of scientific and cultural practices, the Yugoslav society through its avant-garde cultural role initiated a shift of focus in urban culture towards semiotics, historicity, dialectics, creativity, criticism and a revival of the humanistic values of traditional culture. From this viewpoint, the paper examines the interests in theory and practice of the most influential Yugoslav architects in the context of structuralism: Mutnjakovi, Neidhardt, Grabrijan, Bogdanovi and Delalle. Their theoretical approaches effected a change of functionalist principles and values and advocated the return of values of the old city centre and vernacular architecture, specifically its vitality, symbolism, historical continuity, environmental values and diverse urban forms
The consequences of urban policies in socialist Yugoslavia on the transformation of historic centres: the case study of cities in Northern Serbia
The socialist and the post-socialist paradigms of urban development are usually described by scholars as radically opposing. However, the cities in the socialist ex-Yugoslavia (1945-1992) present a different development model, defined by the unique position of the country during the Cold War. Balancing between two main ideological blocs, ex-Yugoslavia adopted the values of the non-aligned movement, simultaneously acting as a stage for the cooperation and exchange of professionals. The distinctive combination of socialist and market-driven elements reflected in urban policies, introducing an innovative approach of local decentralization, unprecedented in the communist and socialist world. The evolution of locally based urban policies was especially favourable for the cities with preserved elements of self-government, inherited from previous periods. The cities presented in this article (Panevo, Sremska Mitrovica, Zrenjanin and Kikinda) follow this pattern due to the Habsburg legacy of strong local governance. Situated in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, these four small cities used the benefits of locally modified urban policies creating a balance between Modernist interventions, implemented during socialism, and the protection of the general outline of their refined historic cores. Considering these specificities and their impact on the urban continuum, this article will use the selected examples and their planning practice for highlighting a new perspective on the urban development manifested before, during and after the period of Yugoslav socialism
Thermal extras of vegetation walls in Belgrade climatic conditions
The goal of this research is to analyse the possibility of using vegetation walls in order to improve the thermal characteristics of office buildings in Belgrade's climatic conditions. The study analyses the possibility of integrating vegetation modules into the fa ades of office buildings. The paper shows the potential of vegetation technologies in the realisation offacade coverings of architectural buildings with a goal to reduce heat gained during summer time. The use of vegetation walls in architecture has opened up new planning possibilities and created planning conditions for reducing the energy necessary for cooling office buildings. Considering that interaction between the outer environment and inner solving the dependency between comfort, outer look and building's energy balance. This paper is presenting the possibility of using sustainable technologies for solving the problem of overheating in Belgrade's climatic conditions. The research considers the possibilities of using vertically greening systems in planning facade coverings, with an analysis of their thermal characteristics for climatic conditions in Belgrade
In search of the principles of resilient urban design: Implementability of the principles in the case of the cities in Serbia
The concept of resilience is probably one of the best-known new international concepts, which have gained attention since the economic crisis in 2008. Since then, this global challenge has redirected general focus at all tiers from "faith" in unstoppable progress to more desirable stabilisation and preparedness. Being the major places of globalism, cities across the World have suffered from the crisis. Therefore, they have profoundly embraced the postulates of resilience, transforming them with "urban" footprint urban resilience. The creation of this significant concept has been in the agenda of many international organisations. However, the concept of urban resilience is still a novelty, with accompanying implementation problems. This is a very important issue in the field of urban design, a part of urbanism very much connected to concrete functioning in situ. This "implementability" of the concept of resilience in urban design is an important issue for Serbia. As a post-socialist country, it has witnessed various problems and general inconsistency. With a strong motive to cope with them, local authorities and institutions often try to directly implement foreign arisen concepts and knowledge, without any local adaptation. The results of these forceful acts are usually questionable. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to understand how the principles of resilient urban design are tailored and how they are important for Serbian cities. Hence, general urban plans as the main development documents in Serbian cities are researched through the lenses of these principles, with expectations to check if they are ready to make urban design in relevant cities more resistant. The final contribution of the paper is foreseen in the form of guidelines to enforce urban resilience at local level. This is the peer-reviewed version of the article: Vaništa Lazarević, Eva, Zoran Keković, and Branislav Antonić. 2018. ‘In Search of the Principles of Resilient Urban Design: Implementability of the Principles in the Case of the Cities in Serbia’.
