Architecture of Detail
(…)Previous publication - the monograph “My Architecture” (BiroVIA, 2012, Belgrade) came from the need to summarize, by recording the creative efforts and activities transmitted to the realized work, the architectural opus of projects carried out in one period of the professional life. This current monograph clarifies the nature of the relationship with previous work, recognizing and emphasizing the essence, strength and position of details in it. The very title “Architecture of Detail” itself is recognized among many conceptually similar, working titles expressed by the play of words and meanings. such as “Details in Architecture”, “With Detail to Architecture”, “Architecture in a Detail”, because a well-founded, aesthetic and functional detail is (almost) an architecture. The selected title of the monograph is sufficiently suggestive to the extent that it unambiguously refers to the essence – as a prominent part, and an indisputable segment of a bigger picture – of the object of architecture.
The approach to shaping the objects, architectural structures and compositions is guided by the principles of beauty and the principles of engineering logic, and the thought that detail ( of construction, materials, elements etc.) represents that prevailing postulate giving the final or initial or reciprocal aesthetic dimension to each part of the architecture.
Presented elements indicate author’s opus that has been created over many years - a work of complex thematic and quantitative scope with the intention to underline the place, importance and weight of details in each of them. In the attempt to systematise and thematically determine the presented work, the place of installation of a detail is recognized by the common denominator. Also, the perceiving architecture of a kind of “living organism” made parallels with the anatomy of the human body. The architectural object is, in some way, a “living organism” with all meanings, “movements”, changes, and thus the classification and interpretation of each of the nine parts of the monograph was made. Fluidity of contemporary context and the postindustrial phase of the first industrial zone in Belgrade
The main idea of this paper is to present the architectural design potentials of The First industrial zone in Belgrade regarding the dynamics of the contemporary urban context and the specific position of cultural and industrial heritage. Fluidity is positioned as the main conceptual and contextual phenomenon referring to the dynamic context of globalization, networking and consumerism, characterized by constant processes of flows and changes of material basis of everydayness. In addition, such socio-spatial context problematizes the static position of heritage and its correspondence to the increasing mobility, travel and touristic flows as well as dynamic everydayness. This paper is based on the research of the contemporary design methodologies in architecture affirming the cultural heritage as an integral element in the contemporary urban and touristic context of Belgrade. In addition, the aim of this paper is to research potentials and methods of preservation and improvements of The first industrial zone on the Danube coast in Belgrade. Therefore, the research is based on the analysis of the Master graduate projects from University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture mentored by assistant professor Nebojša Fotirić and teaching assistant Bojana Jerković-Babović. Historical development of The First industrial zone in Belgrade is characterized by constant transformations of cultural and spatial conditions,
creating fluid character of the transit, stratified place with lots of material and nonmaterial traces of colourful and turbulent history. The position of heritage in contemporary architectural design in the unique historical context of Belgrade`s Danube coast is presented with the idea of researching the relation between contemporary cultural values, touristic identities, aesthetic experiences and the new criteria of architectural creation
Network: Simultaneous flows [STRAND 2019]
The installation is questioning the phenomenon of simultaneous presence and absence in space and its material and non-material duality. Therefore, the context of former industry, functionally abandoned, consists of constant virtual, informational, emotional, ephemeral flows and processes occurring within their interaction. Accordingly, the idea of the spatial installation is to materialize and catch non-material flows occurring on a daily basis in the contemporary networked context and everydayness.Rad je prikazan u delu publikacije - Nasl. str. prištampanog teksta: Exhibition boo

Poslovni objekat predstavlja završnu fazu procesa totalne rekonstrukcije zatečenog čeličnog skeletnog konstruktivnog sistema, dvadesetogodisnjeg projektantskog i investicionog promašaja.
Rasvetom, funkcionalnom i dekorativnom postignuto je interesantno razotkrivanje, modelovanje različitih ambijenata u enterijeru, smenom senki i intezivnih boja korporativnih identiteta u okviru koloritne anemičnosti fasadnih i enterijeskih završnih obrada.
Objekat se sastoji od podrumske (servisne), prizemne (pristupne) i pet funkcionalno nezavisnih etaža, kao i pridodate podrumske garažne površine susednog placa. Otvorena krovna terasa i ugaona kolonada na uličnom frontu predstavljaju glavni ambijent i povezanost unutrašnjeg i spoljnjeg prostora sa gradskom okolinom.Office building represents the final phase in the process of reconstruction of the existing steel construction system skeleton – a twenty years residue from failed design and lost investment process. In the area of the city with mainly housing modern building complexes, a new reconstruction concept was made. The architectural concept of the creation of public space in the area of the extension of the pedestrian zone and the open roof terrace as continuity of principles of modern movements.
Utilizing a strategy of adaptation and rebuilding, a new volume has been formed around the existing structural system as a response to demands of contemporary business needs – a multidisciplinary way of working, the mobility of contemporary business and adaptability to rapidly changing commercial demands.
The building is designed as a string of independent floors with associated common areas – entrance area with designated contents at ground floor level and centrally positioned vertical core with elevators, sanitary areas and necessary services.
Formally the building adheres to simplicity presenting an almost straight cube with uniform materiality – a glass curtain wall highlighted with rhythmical openings. The only exception, driven by architect’s desire to avoid trend in manipulating recognizable elements and materials, is achieved with an accentuated colonnade at the entrance level, therefore, creating an active relationship with the surrounding area and the users of the building.
Lighting elements that are both functional and decorative reveal an interesting experience providing an active remodeling of the interior of the building in which changes in shadows and strong corporate color identities alternate and are in contrast with anemic colors of facades and interior finishes.
The building consists of the underground level (service areas), ground level (entrance area) and five functionally independent floors, as well as the added parking area at the adjoining plot. The open roof terrace and the angle colonnade on the street front represent the main ambiance and connection of the internal and external spaces with the city environment.Nagrada u kategoriji Arhitektura = Award within the Category Architecture / associates: Vanja Enbulajev, Miloš Obradović Dušan Radišić, Bratislav Milojević / Photography: Relja Ivani
Urban regeneration of open public spaces as a tool for the strengthening of cultural tourism: the example of the historic core of Smederevo
The position of the Serbian city of Smederevo on the Danube River, the second longest river and
an important waterway in Europe, offers exceptional benefits for tourism, which is considered
as an important sector for local economic prospects. Smederevo also owns significant cultural
heritage, such as a preserved medieval Smederevo Fortress. Rich heritage, as well as local
culture and tradition, can be the drivers to attract new visitors, who already travel along the
Danube.
There are certain obstacles for the development of cultural tourism in Smederevo, too. First
of all, cultural heritage is scattered along the historical core of the city with numerous open
public spaces. The current state of these spaces is characterised by poor equipment and
connections, occupancy by parked cars, lack of adequate maintenance, and reduced security.
This is particularly visible along the Danube River, which represents a great limitation for the
entire city. The consequence of these deficiencies is the diminished use of these spaces and the
small number of tourists despite significant potential.
In accordance with the previous problem, there is a need for the urban regeneration of the open
public spaces of Smederevo, eventually achieving a double goal: their functional and physical
regeneration, as well as connecting these spaces into a unique network. This is also the goal of
this paper – to propose appropriate ways of the functional and physical improvement of open
public spaces in the historic core of Smederevo by researching urban regeneration options. The
expected results are the identified models of open public spaces of the city whose content and appearance positively influence the intensity of social interaction. As such, these spaces can
significantly improve the cultural-tourist offer of this Danube town
Upgrading urban mobility: the applicability of cycling apps in Banjaluka
Although many European cities have already developed bike-centric urban transportation
networks, labeled as highly sustainable, efficient and safe, the urban centers of Southeast
Europe still have to embrace and implement this trend which demands a proper political,
regulatory and planning setting. However, it should be underlined that bicycle transportation
could have an important impact on the general state of environment, society, traffic and urban
image, and as such, it could be used as a newly generated competitive advantage of SEE cities.
The accelerated technological progress provides multiplying possibilities for development and
upgrading, targeting different urban systems and networks. Bicycle transportation also uses the
benefits of new technologies, which is especially important in cities which still do not have
appropriately developed cycling infrastructure and need to adjust their urban features to the
emerging cycling ecosystems.
Considering the relationship between new trends of cycling in SEE cities and the evolving
technological platform, the paper will focus on the case of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
and the application of two apps - bikecitizens i nextbike.
The impact of these apps on urban mobility and cycling efficiency will be analyzed and evaluated,
creating a starting point for the next phase of bike-friendly transformation of the city. The
increased number of cyclists (stimulated by the use of these apps), as well as the modifications
of (non)existing cycling infrastructure, would contribute to life quality, environmental awareness
and the extended scope of professional knowledge targeting urban planning, design and
decision-making.
The selected case study of Banja Luka will provide an insight into actual implementation/use
of cycling-friendly apps, enabling the elaboration of the existing and preferred patterns of
urban mobility, while simultaneously defining the recommendations for further development
of cycling networks
Connectivity
SPATIAL CONNECTIVITY AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR EUROPE
The Danube - the second longest river in Europe, of 2,858 km length - crosses 10 countries with various historical, cultural, political and economic evolutions and features. In this territorial context, the river plays both the role of a separating physical boundary, largely placed on frontiers segments, and of a common denominator, a natural entity that provide fluvial landscape and accessibility across the entire European corridor it crosses. The latter two assets are partially capitalized by some of the localities along the river, but they are still little exploited resources, especially in the eastern territories along the Danube course, development of which was hampered by the geo-political and economic context of the second half of the 20th century
Expanding a Debate about Shrinking Post-Socialist Cities towards Aesthetics: Urban Shrinkage, Inspiration, and Creativity
Shrinking cities are becoming a new ’reality’ in contemporary urban development thanks to numerous scientific contributions about this globally widespread phenomenon. However, it is not widely known that the term “Shrinking cities” was initially promoted through the same-name international project that culturally dealt with shrinking cities. This project, led by Eastern-German cultural experts, revealed internationally the essence and frequency of urban shrinkage. Interestingly, the approach used in this project has been important to clarify that urban shrinkage is not a negative process per se. Even more, the project contributed to define the multi-dimensional and productive character of this phenomenon.
The further research and projects on shrinking cities were less devoted to its cultural and aesthetical side. They were mostly oriented towards the main causes and consequences of urban shrinkage, discussed within the discourses of economy, geography, demography, political science, and ecology. Nevertheless, the inspirational, artistic and creational aspect of urban shrinkage has not been lost. With the recent formation of the concept of shrinking cities, a new attention has been given to potential ways to overcome urban shrinkage. New conceptual proposals and attempts have also used culture, art, and creativity again, but in different format. They have tried to connect the previously acquired scientific knowledge with creative industries and applied arts, where they are seen not just as a creative moment, idea or artistic inspiration, but as a comprehensive, and usable “healing” approach to reinvigorate shrinking cities.
The aim of this paper is to present ongoing efforts towards the link between urban shrinkage, inspiration, and creativity. It is done by comparing them with the position of this link from the beginnings of the concept of shrinking cities in the early 2000s. Therefore, it is a contribution to the development of the historic perspective of the aesthetical and artistic side of this concept, which certainly needs a more prominent role in the future urban development
How to adapt the research of public space to enhance cultural tourism: the case of Golubac town in Iron Gate Gorge, Serbia
Cultural tourism has become an important driver for local socio-economic development. Therefore, it has a profound reflection into urban space and inevitably influences urban planning and design. Nevertheless, convenient approaches to research and plan cultural tourism is insufficiently resolved field. A special challenge in this approach is the situation with fast development of cultural tourism. It makes a pressure to general spatial development and, in particular, for open public spaces, heavily used by the rising number of cultural tourists. This paper proposes three innovative methods for the research how cities and towns can study and plan its space in line with rising cultural tourism. The first method is the customised theory of city image, developed by Kevin Lynch, where the attitudes of both local people and cultural tourists towards cultural-tourism led open public spaces are examined and compared. Then, the second approach is based on the research of the systematisation and spatial distribution of stakeholders involved in culturaltourism sector. The last used method is the investigation of social networks – Tweeter and Instagram – that have become very important indicators of newer trends globally. All named methods are new in Serbian urban-planning context. The aim of this paper is to show how they can be used for the upgrading of future policy documents for open urban spaces in Golubac Town. This small town in Eastern Serbia is a typical example of a place with recently booming cultural tourism. Golubac is located at the riverside of the Danube River, the second longest river in Europe. The lower part of river has become a major tourist route only recently, bringing the immense inflow of (cultural) tourists in this region. Nevertheless, the linear character of the route and the inherited weakness of Golubac economy have limited the boom of cultural tourism to the main tourist attractions in Golubac area, leaving local community without bigger benefits. Hence, this paper intends to analyse the intersections between cultural tourism and open public spaces in Golubac by the mentioned methods to improve ordinary urban planning and design
