Liveable Open Public Space - From Flaneur to Cyborg

    Get PDF
Open public spaces have always been key elements of the city. Now they are also crucial for mixed reality. It is the main carrier of urban life, place for socialization, where users rest, have fun and talk. Moreover, “Seeing others and being seen” is a condition of socialization. Intensity of life in public spaces provides qualities like safety, comfort and attractiveness. Furthermore, open public spaces represent a spatial framework for meetings and multileveled interactions, and should include virtual flows, stimulating merging of physical and digital reality. Aim of the chapter is to present a critical analysis of public open spaces, aspects of their social role and liveability. It will also suggest how new technologies, in a mixed reality world, may enhance design approaches and upgrade the relationship between a user and his surroundings. New technologies are necessary for obtaining physical/digital spaces, becoming playable and liveable which will encourage walking, cycling, standing and interacting. Hence, they will attract more citizens and visitors, assure a healthy environment, quality of life and sociability. Public space, acting as an open book of the history of the city and of its future, should play a new role, being a place of reference for the flaneur/cyborg citizen personal and social life. The key result is a framework for understanding the particular importance of cyberparks in contemporary urban life in order to better adapt technologies in the modern urban life needs

Post socialist or global capitalist? Recent urban form in Belgrade and Krakow compared with developments in the UK

    Get PDF
Based on recently published work (Djordjevic & Milojevic, 2018; Kantarek, Kwiatkowski & Samuels, 2018) and current studies work at Belgrade University and Cracow University of Technology, recent developments in these cities are compared with UK projects, mainly in Oxford. The projects are located on an urban transect from city centre to urban periphery. Some projects in Belgrade and Krakow e.g. new central area shopping malls, and gated housing communities, are immediately comparable to those in the UK since their form does not only depend on their regulatory contexts but on land ownership, finance and the structure of the development industry. Individual houses on the urban periphery are different as are attitudes towards post war housing estates. It is suggested that these differences depend on the traditions of planning and development, which have been carried across major changes in political and economic circumstances

The aestheticization of Yugoslav architecture through structuralist analysis of form meaning relationship

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the aestheticization of Yugoslav architecture through the implementation of structuralist form that took place between the early 1950s and the late 1970s, and calls attention to the need for contemplating the relationship between formal and intrinsic elements in architecture. An important component of the interest for the formal issues of architecture was to make a distance from functionalistic philosophy, which led to novel understanding of form and to the aestheticization of architecture. Structuralist aesthetics, which was accepted in the 1950s, changed the concept of form for the concept of structure, and focused on the elucidation of internal construction and organization. With reference to structuralist theoretic-methodological approach, an aspiration of Yugoslav architects for achieving inter-relationship between physical and semiotic structure via invisible laws that define and form elements of structure is pointed out. Different aspects of aesthetics of Yugoslav architecture reflected in various approaches for accepting the formal principles: the recognition of constructive aesthetics and importance of integration of constructive and formal elements of an organic entity, the interest in relations between the elements of architectural system, the idea of fluid space, and the evolutionary growth, development and transformation. This paper starts from the premise that the aspiration for aestheticization of architectural form through articulation of the unity of elements promoted Yugoslav architecture to build a connection between formal structure of an object and the meaning of its structural elements

WÜRTH Serbia Training & Test Center [Mention STRAND 2019]

    Get PDF
On Architecture: Challenges In Architecture, Urban Design And Art - international jury report: Würth has made the attention for architecture to one of the key values of the company’s real estate policy. It is not just a matter of public relations & branding, the idea is to bring architecture closer to the community and to improve the quality of life. The training and test center is another example of this social-cultural ambition. Dejan Todorović managed to transform an old warehouse into multi-purpose rooms and to create a translucent and light atmosphere. By a simple dividing panels rearrangement, it can become anything from a series of individual classrooms or offices to conference space, exhibition gallery, or a party venue. On top of that using the company colours black, white and red in a rather subtle way, without being intrusive. One could say a kind of hygiene for the mind. Dejan Todorović creates the perfect balance between being distinctive and modest. The interior shows a lightness of being, leaving plentiful mental space enabling the users to focus on it’s main function: training and testing. In doing so being an ideal environment for transferring knowledge. Taken these aspects in consideration the jury decided to honor the project with a mention.Rad je prikazan u delu publikacije - Nasl. str. prištampanog teksta: Exhibition boo

The Institutional Structure of Land Use Planning for Urban Forest Protection in the Post-Socialist Transition Environment: Serbian Experiences

    Get PDF
In recent decades, Serbia has been undergoing a period of post-socialist transition that has significantly altered the value system underlying spatial development due to alteration of ownership frameworks and land use rights. In consequence, issues have arisen of how to strike a balance between the various interests involved in the distribution of spatial resources and how to control the outcomes of public policies. Land use planning has been identified as an efficient instrument for implementing the public policy value framework. The objective of this paper is to identify the key points of land use planning in relation to urban forest management of significance for the maintenance of urban forests in the environment of post-socialist institutional transformation in Serbia. Seen as an institutional structure, the practice of land use planning in Serbia is the product of a stable interaction between the set of interrelated rules, procedures and organisational units that allows spatial development outcomes that take into account and safeguard land resources and, ultimately, urban forests. The research was carried out in relation to the concept of institutional transformation across three scales: macro / governance, meso / coordination and micro / agency: (a) components of the regulatory framework; (b) procedures for cooperation between stakeholders; and (c) specific activities of land use planning practice. As a result, the concept of Land use Planning for Urban Forest Protection (LUPUFP) in Serbia was established. It identifies components of institutional structure of importance for regulating system changes in the post-socialist transition environment and steering them towards the establishment of a value framework that allows the agenda of saving urban forests to be implemented

Challenging Methods and Results Obtained from User-Generated Content in Barcelona’s Public Open Spaces

    Get PDF
User-generated content (UGC) provides useful resources for academics, technicians and policymakers to obtain and analyse results in order to improve lives of individuals in urban settings. User-generated content comes from people who voluntarily contribute data, information, or media that then appears in a way which can be viewed by others; usually on the Web. However, to date little is known about how complex methodologies for getting results are subject to methodology-formation errors, personal data protection, and reliability of outcomes. Different researches have been approaching to inquire big data methods for a better understanding of social groups for planners and economic needs. In this chapter, through UGC from Tweets of users located in Barcelona, we present different research experiments. Data collection is based on the use of REST API; while analysis and representation of UGC follow different ways of processing and providing a plurality of information. The first objective is to study the results at a different geographical scale, Barcelona’s Metropolitan Area and at two Public Open Spaces (POS) in Barcelona, Enric Granados Street and the area around the Fòrum de les Cultures; during similar days in two periods of time - in January of 2015 and 2017. The second objective is intended to better understand how different types of POS’ Twitter-users draw urban patterns. The Origin-Destination patterns generated illustrate new social behaviours, addressed to multifunctional uses. This chapter aims to be influential in the use of UGC analysis for planning purposes and to increase quality of life
