Aspects of the relationship between the architectural heritage and nature for better places in future
Through consideration of the built heritage in terms of biophilic characteristics, different
approaches and elements of establishing a relationship to nature can be recognized, which in
different ways evolved depending on location, climate, social and cultural conditions. The paper
discusses some elements of biophilic design as well as their expression in architectural creation,
with an emphasis on highlighting elements of biophilic design in architectural heritage. The
importance of connecting people with nature and the need for this connection to be realized
for people in urban areas is indicated by numerous papers that prove that nature has a positive
effect on the quality of work, education, health, recreation, housing and others. Nowadays, man
is more and more alienated from nature by using modern technology to make his life and work
easier. New technologies are increasingly represented in our lives, so our built environment has
changed very dynamically in the 20th century, as well as at the beginning of the 21st century.
Since there is an adverse effect on the physical, psychological and health condition of man, the
experience and skills arising from the architectural heritage are becoming increasingly important
in order to overcome the problems. This paper presents a brief overview of papers that consider
the impact of urban environment on human well-being, as well as studies that address the topic
of biophilia as an approach dealing with the need of man to be in a natural environment. The
aim of the paper is to indicate that the appreciation of the experience and skills arising from the
architectural heritage can provide better places in the future and human well-being
Architectural Sublime: Dome Above Dome
The European concept of the architecture of sky oscillates between the differences of the two worlds. In the period of classical antiquity, that was a leap forward from the perfect towards the unique, on a course set by the philosophy which began with the thought of nature (physics) and progressed towards the reflection of the essence of matter (metaphysics). The poiesis of the whole, as an architectural potential for the range of a higher scale, was born from the projection of cosmopolitan tendencies, but only after this perception of the world had included universality. For antique thought, whose boundaries and geometry were linked to the sphere, universality referred to the shape of the Universe, thus the geometric sky expressed the ideal One. Parthenon and Pantheon, unified through the thematisation of the geometric dome, uncovered possibilities for sublime architectural worlds. One world offers pure geometry, while the other one is ruled by the visual presentation. One projects the depth of the sky, while the other sees the sky only as its illusion. The sky is an absolute category for the architecture of both worlds, it is placed out of reach, and its symbolic sublimity is achieved through spatial opening, outwards. Sublimity is a constant metaphysical challenge in European architecture. It connects aesthetics with the spatial secret: the idea that it takes more than perfect technique to bring matter to life. In that sense, the connection between the antique ability to reduce the Universe to an object using weight, and the modernist antigravity which leaves the orbit of the Earth, may be interpreted today only if the limits of the visibility of architecture were expanded to reach the esthetic dimension of digital infinity, the same infinity which is stamped by pictures of Voyager on its journey of no return. That proves that only those who abandon their own position may come close to that which has remained sublime
The urban policy of open public spaces in an arising cultural-tourism destination: Golubac town in Iron Gate Gorge, Serbia
An ordinary practice in urban planning and design in an already existing urban space is to study the local needs and aspirations to understand how this space should be regenerated, both physically and functionally. The regenerated place that can address them can be a new driving force for the revitalisation of wider urban fabric or, even, the entire settlement. However, in some unusual situations, it is very hard to explore and evaluate “local” needs and aspirations. This is the case with the settlements with strong tourism industry, where tourist visitors periodically outnumber local residents. Therefore, their influence for the context of these settlements is immense and it cannot be omitted in any future urban plan and project for this space. Golubac Town in Eastern Serbia is a perfect example for this consideration. The town is located at the entrance of the largest gorge of the Danube, a major European river and water-transit corridor. This unique position of a “guardian” at the entrance has left medieval Golubac Fortress as a cultural heritage of national importance. Furthermore, the gorge is protected as a national park, with preserved landscape and many endemic species. Nevertheless, all heritage sites are not in Golubac Town. Moreover, the town itself is small and weighted with socio-economic problems from post-socialist transformation. Thus, the recent inflow of cultural tourists has not been sufficiently responded by local tourism sector. One of the main reasons is inadequate physical environment in the town, which requires general modernisation and, even more, better adaptation to prospective cultural tourists. The aim of this research is to explore if official urban policy towards open public spaces in Golubac, as the main elements of its physical environment, corresponds to the current needs of the prospective cultural tourists. It is organised through the analysis of the main urban plan for the settlement, the implementation of relevant planning actions and the actual use of open public spaces in Golubac by different users, done through modified method of space syntax. The findings of the presented research are the gaps between the official urban policy of the town and reality. Finally, they are a base for recommendations for new planning directions, which mainly refer to the improvements of open public spaces
Riječni kvart – river block and walk Zenica [3rd Prize]
Rečni kvart postaje nova gradska zona koju odlikuje slikovito prirodno okruženje u blizini centra grada Zenice i poseduje prepoznatljivost na nacionalnom i međunarodnom nivou. Novi zeleni centar grada stvara jedinstveni urbani prostor koji objedinjuje prirodu, svakodnevni gradski život i pešačku infrastrukturu kroz okupljanje stanovnika Zenice sadržajima rekreacije, kupovine, sporta i odmora.
Mapping Belgrade’s cultural and historical ambiental unities: application of psychogeographic methods
The urban environment is a complex system of physical and functional structure, human interrelations and inherited values that define the identity of the city. Mentioned elements are in constant mutual interaction, therefore the complex attributes of one territory can be defined by mapping methods that consider elements of uniform ambient values in the urban structure. The aim of this paper is to identify specific ambiental unities of Belgrade that represent the potential for development of contemporary cultural fluidity, while preserving the cultural heritage of the city. By examining the applicability of general mapping methods to the city of Belgrade, the aspects of psychogeographical mapping techniques are defined in a specific local context. Contemporary environmental experience is built on the basis of functional, perceptual and symbolic meanings of architecture in a particular context. The research result is an environmental mapping methodology that illustrates and emphasises the relation between the internal and external representation of space through user’s sensual experience; its verification within the layered contextual structure of Belgrade gives the potential for method objectification and further use in different contexts.
objedinila u jedan i time dobila soba većih dimenzija.
nosivost, upotrebljivost i stabilnost postojećih elemenata konstrukcije objekta
The main idea of this paper is to research the differences in the position of architectural form between functionalist and populist postulates, between creating the object and creating the message in the architectural context of XX century. Accordingly, this paper is focused on researching the changes in previous qualities of architectural form in the technocratic, engineering rhetoric principles and the popularization of communicational codes in architecture. Therefore, the architecture of flows is characterized by the dispersion of architectural formal characteristics and changes from the objective, universal expression of movement as a function to the dynamic subjective, relational experience of architectural form. Additionally, both functionalist and populistic views are researched in relation to the aspects and notions of flows with the aim of theoretical positions comparative analyzes. This paper is focused on the aspects of flows such as movement, mobility and speed, manifested in tectonic, structural values of architectural form in modernism and their changes into the populist tools for commercial communication in architectural form in postmodern context

The Central Development and Cultural Axis of Belgrade, established in the Master Plan for 2021, defines the anticipated continuity of cultural context development in the city. Skadarska Street was recognized within the axis of culture as a polygon for the analysis of spatial atmospheric qualities, based on characteristic morphological, functional, ambient and memorial values. The aim of this paper is to objectify the intimate relationship between users and space through the analysis of the Skadarska street front. The street front was interpreted through the notion of urban scenery, which is the visual impression that a space user forms during a perceptual encounter with the environment. The visual impression of space, defined through examining the intensity of the sensory experience dependent on the viewing distance of the built front, is a basic parameter in the analysis of the architectural values of the atmospheric unity. This spatial analysis, with emphasis on user experience, introduces a new kind of interpretation of the environment that is applicable in different contexts and gives an overview of the multi-layered character of the urban environment
Boundary fluidity, from the aspect of flexibility, is manifested through the dynamic experience of architectural and ambient values of space during movement. Boundary flexibility is emphasized by conflicts that occur when two areas are fighting for the same contour and are demonstrated through a degree of familiarity, which dictates the limitations that determine the hierarchy of space privacy. The aim of this paper is to examine the intimate relationship between the users and space, through the analysis of boundary flexibility of the city’s open public spaces in accordance with the contemporary rhythms of life in the urban context. Special focus is on the study of the relationships between the flows of culture, social needs and changes to the life rhythm in the contemporary age, as well as their reflections on activities in the open public space. The transformation of lifestyle over time impacts the boundaries flexibility and the perceptual value of open public spaces, as well as change of activities within space. This stance is being examined through a case study on a residential settlement on the Belgrade’s riverside, designed through the influence of the ideology of socialism. The focus of this research is on examining the perceptual experiences of the modern user of former community spaces as a by-product of the socio-political patterns of the time in which they were built. The transformation of everyday life also leads to changes in the way the community space is used, as designed architectural values are reflected and scattered. The loss of community values, promoted by the ideology of socialism through an active relationship among users, has contributed to the devastation of the designed identity of these spaces. The contemporary age with its new types of time consumption has contributed to the development of new forms of former community spaces usages. The contribution of this research is reflected in the potential improvements and the transformations of existing public spaces formed under the influence of socialist ideology through the boundary flexibility aspect, with the tendency to adapt to the development of the contemporary city. The paper establishes a basis for further interpretations of the complexity of lifestyle changes and their impact on the global transformation of cities and urban spaces. Contemporary theoretical approaches to this issue can contribute to the establishment of a platform for new design approaches and space interpretations
