Boundary connects areas of different significance, depicting their characteristic. Dual nature emphasises the fluidity of the boundary expressed through spatial perception within the mobility framework in open public spaces. Significance of this paper is reflected in defining open public space boundary phenomenon. This phenomenon is presented through variability, relativity, diffusion and dialecticism. Transformation of conventional boundary perception implies occurrence of fluidity concept as a basic tool for spatial experience recognition within architecture discourse. Evaluation of architecture receptiveness depicts boundary significance in experiencing integral spatial context and determines city identity. Goal of this paper is to understand relation of boundary to user’s experience of ambient and architecture values of open public space within complex city context. Different user’s understanding of the boundary reflects in variety experiences of visual spatial dynamics, due to change of understanding of architecture elements hierarchy. Boundary influence on user’s perception of open public space is expressed through unique spatial feature – fluidity. This paper depicts boundary fluidity by forming dynamic experience of open public space through mobility and investigates aspects of flexibility, continuity and permeability. Potentials of boundary perception, during acquiring spatial experiences, are challenged through property of boundary fluidity which is expressed as unity of static and dynamic architecture components. This research contributes through improvement and transformations of existing public spaces within the frame of complex spatial situations aspiring adaptation to development of contemporary city.

Sundial for Spatial Echoes, Installation at Bauhaus Museum Weimar, Germany, 2019

Entangling disciplines from physics and biology to sociology and architecture, sensitive to our political milieu, Saraceno’s cloudlike landscape of interwoven, web-like fibres creates a dynamic, reflective atmosphere. His artistic research and endeavours are driven by his desire to develop new modes of interaction and perception, in response to socio-political and environmental realities of our time. Contextually, ‘Sundial for Spacial Echoes’ refers to Saraceno’s many years of research and projects. Inspired by the study of complex, net-like configurations and structures characterized by clouds, bubbles and other geometries found in the natural world. The systems of interwoven ropes and cloud-like cluster modules arranged in the nets reclaim Saraceno’s artistic research on the potentials of spider webs and how they can be transferred and correlated to other phenomena. The artwork is interactive in that visitors can touch a rope of the installation reflecting both the daylight and artificial light. The network then generates its own room echo. This constant change of perception turns the aesthetic experience into a synaesthetic event for the visitor. He is stimulated in this very sensuous way to discover his individual limits of perception. The surreal, almost virtual environment lets forget the real world for a moment and creates a dynamic as well as a reflective atmosphere.

Diagrammatics, the field of convergence : spatial/architectural perspective

    No full text
The author problematises the definition and broader acceptance of the term ‘diagrammatics’. She attempts to historically analyse and theoretically ground it, as well as to provide its precise meaning and scope regarding both historical references and modality she is using and conceptualising as a new one. Aside from interpretation and function of the term ‘diagrammatics’ that is independent of any disciplinary specification, the author also reflects upon the term's spatial and architectural perspective and designation, narrowing down research domain in order to inspect its application in spatial discourses. • • • While the first part of the lecture title implies the involvement of different research fields, and the second one announces a specific disciplinary view regarding diagrammatics, diagrammatic reasoning, and representation, the relationship between mathematics (geometry), architecture, imagination, and data is put forward in response to the workshop's call, offering an inquiry into and historical preview of the mathematical-architectural line of thought (microhistory), its contemporary stage of development, and future prospects, based on its inherent diagrammatic nature and character.(предавање по позиву) (осим на конференцијама) • • • Invited Lecture (by Prof. Amirouche Moktefi, PhD) • • • Event: Workshop: Mathematics and Imagination, Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance (School of Business and Governance) & Department of Cybernetics (School of Science), Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia, 28 August 2019; Location: TalTech. Aleksandar Deroko: Rebuilding Smederevo after 5 June 1941 explosion

    Get PDF
Aleksandar Deroko had a noteworthy and decisive impact on the architectural culture of Smederevo. This paper will not treat the issue of his exceptional work on evaluating and protecting the medieval Smederevo Fortress, but rather it will focus on a very specific period during which Deroko, as an architect, set up a significant number of parameters for a new vision for Smederevo’s urban culture. This vision is embodied in his projects and architectural realisations in one of the most delicate periods of the town’s history, during its reconstruction that lasted a few years after a horrific wartime explosion nearly wiped Smederevo off the map, on 5 June 1941. In spite of many different ideological and political reason, as a comprehensive historical and monographic assessment of Deroko’s works in Smederevo had not been made to this date. This paper will assess subject such as Deroko’s relationship with the city’s historical and cultural heritage, political and ethical qualities of this relationship during a delicate period in Serbian history, and architectural and aesthetic principles that affected the way Deroko would shape his work in Smederevo and his vision for a rebuilt city. Lastly, this paper will hint at the qualifications of his work in Smederevo and its impact on the present-day town

Architecture as a textual phenomenon: Alexander Brodsky’s architectural practices of appropriation [SAJ]

    Get PDF
This paper analyses architecture created through appropriating existing materials while focusing on strategies of intertextuality. It argues that the meaning of an architectural object does not derive from itself, or its poetic concepts, but rather from its relationship with order architectural objects, other art works as texts, cultural texts, and every day practices. My aim is to show various theoretical problems of the theory of architecture and art, which is a network of overlapping texts of culture, surround the architectural production of Alexander Brodsky. Here I use different and varied theoretical concepts, selecting two case studies by Brodsky – The Pavilion for Vodka Ceremonies and Rotunda – upon which the paper is based as an interdiscursive study

    Get PDF

Pop(o)s of shopping centre - a new approach towards urban design

    Get PDF
The constant decline in the number of public space and the attendant emergence of pseudopublic spaces with limited access occur simultaneously with the aggression of commercial culture and the emergence of cultural spectacle. Shopping centres provide physical spaces for social activities, and increasingly they have been replacing all aspects of urban life. Nowadays it is becoming an alternative centre in the city with its own “public space”. With the creation of places for public, cultural and recreational events, and above all, places for leisure and socialization, shopping centres have become more than a “commercial city”. According to various authors, the quality of POP(o)S has been called into question, and even though it usually suggests a negative phenomenon, this paper focuses on its advantages and possibilities. Paper also investigates the ways to use privately owned public spaces, with special focus on open spaces, plazas, and atrios owned by shopping centres. Paper presents three case studies: Ušće shopping centre in Belgrade, Rajićeva shopping centre in Belgrade and Manufaktura shopping centre in Lodz. With the comparison of the above mentioned, the aim is to recognize different patterns of use of POP(o)S in correlation to the model of the built structure. New urban design strategy should provide integration of different civic functions, in order to create a new type of public realm, which would improve the connectivity and usability of surrounding public spaces and urban environment. The aim of the paper is to present that carefully located and well-integrated shopping centers can contribute to the circulation of activities and people, thus to the preservation of city values and promotion of public life. However, question how could one consider private space as public space remains
