Valorisation and revitalization of heritage alongside Danube river: case study of Smederevo castle
The topic of heritage in general has been emphasized many times on different occasions,
regarding its significance as a historical legacy of a country and its people, region or a city. The
issue of heritage valorisation is sensitive due to the context relation and specific regulations, as
it is the case with Serbia. The particular topic of this research is the valorisation and proposals
for revitalization of heritage alongside the river Danube. As a case study a part around the old
City castle of Smederevo is selected. Besides being rich in cultural, historical, tangible, but also
intangible heritage, this area is researched as a part of an Interregional European project called
DanUrb. Revitalization of this, until now, neglected and not used area is of utmost importance
both for a site and for a contemporary city of Smederevo. In addition, some consultations
occurred with local authorities upon this task.
Research methodology used in this particular paper was based on extensive literature review
and classification of data gathered from Serbian legislative and planning documents as well
as other primary and secondary resources. Regarding aforementioned, selected case study
area method of expert observations is also applied. For further qualitative results criteria and
indicators (C&I) network is used to determine specific characteristics of heritage, such as: scale,
category, type of protection and current condition.
Overall aim of this study is not only mostly delicate valorisation of medieval architecture, its
classification, and identification, but also to propose some methods for integration of creative
industries with the aim of revitalization of that important, but rather neglected and poorly
protected heritage area alongside Danube in Serbia
Nosivost metalnоg konektera u zavisnosti od položaja i geometrije eksera
This paper presents results of the experimental determination of the load-bearing capacity
of structural timber connections realized by nail metal connector plates as a function of nail
location, length and diameter. Three different diameters of the nails have been used, specifically
2.0, 2.5, and 3.1 mm. The length of the metal nails in connectors has been determined after the
detailed analysis, and kept at 20 mm during the experimental research. Nails distribution over
the connector plate is such that it forms the series of equilateral triangles, so that a side of the
triangle equals five times the diameter of the nails used. Preceding the testing, and while using
the above listed parameters certain analysis has been done. In order to experimentally determine
the load-bearing capacity of the nail metal connectors, the penetration depth, i.e. the length of
the nails has been kept constant, while using three different nail diameters. The testing has been
done on multiple samples in the accordance with Eurocode 5.U radu je prikazano eksperimentalno određivanje nosivosti veza ostvarenih ekserastim metalnim konekterima, u funkciji položaja, dužine i prečnika eksera.

Building A Room of One’s Own: An Insight into the Origins of Women Architects in Serbia
The aim of the essay to represent the work of women architects in Serbia through contemporary feminist theories. It uses the wide range of research about women in Serbian architecture, their background, the institutions they worked in, their buildings, their pedagogical work etc. The text is compared with some elements of Linda Nochlin “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” and reaches to find out similarities and differences between positions of the women as architects and women as other visual artists. Also, this text tries to find out the connection between the women architect’s background and their position as architect in Serbian society and tries to point out that the valorization of their work in past was in direct connection with the latter fact and needs new critical readings through contemporary feminist theories
Public Monuments in Contemporary Belgrade: Between Stumbling Blocs and Invisibility
This essay is an analysis of monuments and memorial locations in Serbia, particularly in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, during the contemporary transition phase. Estethical and artistic, but also political side of these monuments and their role in the early 21st century society is being observed in the paper. The research looks into the history of the monuments on the territory of Belgrade and explores the states of the monument heritage from the previous (socialist) period of the second half of the 20th century and cases of demolishing or replacing monuments with those ideologically relevant later on. The paper includes mapping of the new monuments built in memory of the unsettled disintegration of SFRJ during the 1990s as well as their urban context. It also looks for the reasons of non-existence of so called counter-monuments or participatory monuments in Belgrade and for building of a larger number of classical statues. It has been concluded that the monuments in Belgrade became the ‘stumbling stone’ of every constructive analysis and criticism of the urbanities and their memorial places, but at the same time ‘invisible’ not only in the way described by Robert Musil. Amongst these two determinants, the public monuments in Belgrade built in the beginning of the 21st century have been observed here
Monastery Crkvina and monastery Tvrdoš, Trebinje, Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina - complex reconstruction and development
Trebinje with its surrounding towns and villages of the most southern part of Herzegovina, their
location, terrain, nature and climate, form a specific Mediterranean oasis. These particular
characteristics are evident in the dynamic and rational organization of habitats, lively silhouette
of their urban morphology, organic buildings stemming from the rocky and slopped terrains and
their “right to view”.
Architectural and spatial patterns of Mediterranean and close-by Adriatic seas are recognizable
in the towns of this area, on all spatial and social levels – from house and courtyard, to
neighbourhoods and public spaces. Specific characteristic of these towns is their spatial and
functional symbiosis with their surroundings, context and larger area around.
Main references and incentives in working through this project was the Orthodox Monastery
Hilandar (Atos), the monasteries and old villages of Herzogovina, old forthified towns of the
region, traditional houses and architectural heritage of the region - as a whole.
All the references are jewels of highest environmental and architectural wealth. They are full of
inspirational ideas for their clients, decision makers, creative individuals, architects and builders.
They are also great examples of site specific architecture, improvement of the found built
environment, ways of building and shaping architecture, choice and use of materials, finishes
and construction, choice of colour, light and shade, symbolism and architectural style.
A special incentive for every creative individual surely is the architectural heritage and the
building tradition of this region.
Specific natural, social, historic and cultural conditions, as well as the different needs of people,
gave rise to specific forms of compact villages and tightly packed groups of buildings
Fluidity of contemporary context and the postindustrial phase of the first industrial zone in Belgrade
The main idea of this paper is to present the architectural design potentials of The First
industrial zone in Belgrade regarding the dynamics of the contemporary urban context and the
specific position of cultural and industrial heritage. Fluidity is positioned as the main conceptual
and contextual phenomenon referring to the dynamic context of globalization, networking
and consumerism, characterized by constant processes of flows and changes of material basis
of everydayness. In addition, such socio-spatial context problematizes the static position of
heritage and its correspondence to the increasing mobility, travel and touristic flows as well as
dynamic everydayness.
This paper is based on the research of the contemporary design methodologies in architecture
affirming the cultural heritage as an integral element in the contemporary urban and touristic
context of Belgrade. In addition, the aim of this paper is to research potentials and methods of
preservation and improvements of The first industrial zone on the Danube coast in Belgrade.
Therefore, the research is based on the analysis of the Master graduate projects from University
of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture mentored by assistant professor Nebojša Fotirić and
teaching assistant Bojana Jerković-Babović. Historical development of The First industrial zone
in Belgrade is characterized by constant transformations of cultural and spatial conditions,
creating fluid character of the transit, stratified place with lots of material and nonmaterial
traces of colourful and turbulent history. The position of heritage in contemporary architectural
design in the unique historical context of Belgrade`s Danube coast is presented with the idea
of researching the relation between contemporary cultural values, touristic identities, aesthetic
experiences and the new criteria of architectural creation
Among Scales
WORK DESCRIPTION in English (max. 100 words or 6 rows):
The AMONG SCALES workshop is aimed at researching and systematizing the spatial and programmatic impulses of the new modernity of socialist residential settlements in the territory of the city of Belgrade, built on the basis of the Master Plans of 1950 and 1972, which established the contemporary urbanization of Belgrade. The main objective of the workshop is to look at current relational flows and gaps between urban and rural, architecture and nature, global flows and everyday life at the relevant spatial levels, from the level of comprehensive administrative territory of the city to single residential unit - scale 1: territory, scale 2: morphology, scale 3: typology, scale 4: program and scale 5: ambience. The workshop was attended by 67 students of bachelor, integrated and master studies divided into 18 teams. The result of the workshop is recognized on two levels - the first is a systematic chronological review of the construction of the residential settlements in Belgrade in the period 1945-1978 with the identification of the planning framework and the principal spatial-morphological and functional-conceptual concepts, while the second part of the contribution is reflected in the created ''identity cards'' of individual residential settlements through the identification of recognized phenomena at the analyzed spatial levels.Poster: [http://raf.arh.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/806
