Given the impressive number of towers in the wider environment of that one specifically considered, the intervention is aimed at establishing a universal proposal for the solution to the problem of restoring specimens of this precious fortification architectural heritage. In addition to the intervention itself, mutual networking of the towers into a unique tourist system is planned by introducing a navigable cultural route. The configured access platform (dock/pier) is recognized as an element that can be applied multiple times, invariantly in relation to immediate topographic conditions that vary from tower to tower. Likewise, the stair element, deconstructed from the remains of the surrounding architectural heritage, is quite ambivalent, i.e., it simultaneously represents a viewpoint towards the sea and an auditorium for observing the wall projections on the tower during the navigable infotour program's lecture sessions. The newly introduced/added wall mass consists of gabions filled with crushed native stone. The proposed intervention hesitates from any anticipation of the initial volume of the tower since it is the basic archival unknown of the competition. The defined contour of the uppermost layers of the wall mass is merely one sequence in a wide range of possible final contours. By placing the communication zone within the facade envelope of the tower, i.e., within the imagined extension of the wall mass, the future user of the tower is enabled to reach different heights and positions on it, regardless of the degree of devastation, typology, and morphological characteristics of the tower. Through the use of grid panels, the penetration of light and raindrops was achieved, as well as the key visual communication between users. Although the circulation function would typically be restored by inserting new floor slabs that are either paraphrases or quotes of the original ones, in the proposed solution, none were added. On the contrary, from a volumetric point of view, the existing floor slab is somehow abolished by being hollowed out, and light was brought into the previously dark and closed space

Building Technologies for Sustainable Heritage Treatment: Concepts, Design Strategies and Tools

    No full text
During the last decade, the issues of climate change, global vulnerability regarding the resource supply and socioeconomic uncertainties have transferred from speculations about the future development to very tangible present. This means that the focus is shifting, from raising awareness and formulating general directions, to more direct and immediate actions. In building sector, such actions demand both shift in design approach and technology in order to provide sustainable solutions for new and existing buildings alike

Dense and Green Cities : Case Study of Altstetten-Albisrieden, Zurich

    No full text
Urbanisation, a burgeoning trend driven by the ever-increasing urban population, has emerged as a profound global phenomenon that has transformed our landscapes and societies in remarkable ways over recent decades. This shift has not only powered economic progress, contributing over 80% to the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but has also seen more than half of humanity—over 4 billion people—gravitate towards urban centres, a figure projected to soar to 70% by the year 2050. As cities expand, they often spiral into unsustainable urban sprawl, responsible for a staggering two-thirds of global energy consumption and more than 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. While urbanisation has enhanced productivity and efficiency, it has simultaneously placed immense pressure on our natural environment, ecosystems, and finite resources, pushing these vital systems to a tipping point. In light of these challenges, this study has chosen Altstetten-Albisrieden as a focal point to delve into effective strategies and approaches for urban densification and transformation within the unique context of Zurich. It aims to illuminate the intricately choreographed process of urban transformation, focused on the creation of a high-density, liveable city. By examining the neighbourhoods of Altstetten and Albisrieden, the study investigates the patterns of urban transformation driven by the pressures of population growth in Zurich. It aspires to deliver strategic insights and recommendations for urban planning that accommodate rapid population increases while sustaining high living quality and urban ecological balance. The study critically analyses existing building typologies and urban planning frameworks, scrutinising their social, environmental, and ecological repercussions. It formulates various densification scenarios to explore the opportunities and challenges posed by different urban densification measures and their corresponding solutions. Ultimately, the research will culminate in a systematic approach to urban analysis, paving the way for the development of innovative urban planning strategies

Typo-morphological study of urban patterns within spa settlements in Serbia (SPATTERN) [34th International Urban Planners Exhibition] [2nd Prize]

The study investigates urban patterns of spa settlements in Serbia, conducted within the SPATTERN project (https://spattern.org/ ). It is grounded in a typo-morphological approach that combines contextual analysis with systematic classification. The first segment provides a comparative overview of 12 Serbian spa settlements through three dimensions of urbanization and six thematic fields, establishing a broader framework for understanding the urban character of this settlement typology. The second segment develops a methodological framework for classifying urban patterns, with clearly defined criteria and interpretative indicators. In this way, the study offers a new methodology for critically assessing, preserving, and advancing spa settlements in the future.Druga nagrada na 34. Challenges of Valorizing City Infrastructure as Cultural Heritage

    No full text
This paper addresses the urban infrastructure as a platform that can overcome the natural urban dichotomy. Аbandoned railway infrastructure is recognized as one kind of architectural feature representing this separation. Successively, environments are examined through the prism of ‘first nature’, which exists outside human influence, and ‘second nature’, representing the human made landscape. Contemporary circumstances raise questions regarding the character and programming of a ‘third nature’, responding to today’s urban lifestyle. The hybrid relations are examined, in which architecture becomes a new complex ECO system – a cyborg of nature and culture. Through a case study conducted at the Old Railway Bridge in Belgrade, the city is intervened through the programmatic and spatial articulation of the phenomenon that can be defined as ‘Emerging Heritage’, problematizing the treatment of the insufficiently recognized legacy of the Industrial Revolution. The research and project development were implemented with a group of master's students from the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. The students were tasked with exploring how infrastructure can become a catalyst for a sustainable future, focusing on three key aspects – ecologically restorative, culturally rich, and socially just. Through the review of the students' works, possible interventions will be shown concerning the interpretations of the project brief and the site context. Architecture is positioned as a tool for questioning the present and shaping the future, opening up broader critical themes related to ecologically-driven design while addressing the economic, ethical, social, and other values inherent in the practices of hybrid natures in the city

Planning framework for (re)developing public open spaces in residential neighbourhoods: Case of Belgrade (Serbia)

    No full text
In urban planning and design disciplines, public open spaces (POS) have been recognised as an important quality of life factor whose development should be supported by planning regulation and design guidance. Although in theory there is a general agreement on what good quality of POS is and how to achieve it, in practice, the treatment of POS in urban planning stands in the close relation to the specific development context. In that sense, the changes in social, political and economic system induce changes in how public open spaces are conceived and regulated through urban planning. This paper deals with post-socialist transition of Serbia and reviews standing planning framework for (re)developing public open spaces in residential neighbourhoods, taking Belgrade as a case. It explores POS treatment in the key strategic and planning documents in order to recognise potential cause-and-effect relationships between the current planning framework and the development characteristics of residential POS, by investigating: 1) POS treatment within the regulation related to the existing modernist large housing estates, and 2) POS treatment within the regulation related to new multi-family housing. Critical analyses of conceptualisation, planning standards and guidelines for POS reveals changes in planning approach in the new post-socialist urban development context, as well as diversified modes of POS treatment in relation their (un)recognised value, purpose and location in the city

    Community Creativity Booster Method

    No full text
The open public space within one neighborhood represents a critical space for socialization. However, local governance participatory mechanisms need to be more sophisticated and developed in the context of a post-socialist society in transition, such as Serbia or other Eastern European countries, to achieve this quality. In such systems, children and youth usually do not participate in decision-making processes regarding the enhancement of these spaces, so their needs are neither included nor considered. The usual practice is that the open public space maintenance or renewal projects are top-down decided, and with limited funds, so often design solutions are replicated, not fitting the contemporary real needs of the end users, without relation to the climate change policies and measures. Therefore, this method focuses on including marginalized groups and promoting the Nature-Based Solutions co-creation on a community level

Soundscape as an Urban Transformation Tool / Echoes of New Belgrade

    No full text
The soundscape, understood as the acoustic environment perceived by humans, plays a fundamental role in shaping spatial experiences. This research examines how auditory perception can be used as a tool in urban design, with a specific focus on the soundscapes of urban areas in New Belgrade. By analysing the role of sound in the formation of urban identities and communities, the study seeks toidentify locations that could benefit from targeted acoustic interventions. This primary goal of the study is to quantitatively measure noise pollution levels in several residential blocks of New Belgrade. To minimise and control relative error during measurements, various phonometers and applications will be used to accurately analyse sound levels. A key outcome of the research is the creation of a sound map for selected residential blocks in New Belgrade. This sound map will serve as a foundation for future surveys on residents' perceptions of noise pollution and their perspectives on potential remediation strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of life in their neighborhoods. The results will aim to develop guidelines for spatial interventions that could improve the quality of life within local communities of New Belgrade by identifying areas that would benefit from targeted interventions to enhance the acoustic environment. Additionally, the research will provide insights into how soundscapes influence the perception of public space and propose new approaches for integrating auditory elements into urban planning

    Justiniana Prima : Stranded Naves

    No full text
An Arcadian landscape situated in the heart of the Balkans, away from the main roads of the modern time, hides an archaeological site known to locals as the Empress City. Although, this is not the empress, whose beauty complements the image of the greatest Byzantine ruler on the magnificent mosaics in Ravenna, it seems as though this name keeps the evidence of still unveiled plaque with its historic name. The hypothesis that the Empress City is actually Justiniana Prima was presented in 1922 by Professor Vladimir Petkovic, who was its first professional explorer. This riddle still levitates over continuous researches of archaeology, geology and bio-forensics. The story about this city relies on numerous facts about one of the most exciting constructions of the 6th century A.D. Archaeological and morphological expressiveness like no other, more than anything else, confirms the ruler’s fascination with the beauty of construction. The thrill of the fact that there is a truth which is impossible to track, creates the potentials of the architecture that renounces its recurred incidence and abides to its original idea. Thus, the narratives entwined in the structure of this text represent the architecture per se. The new chapters in access to this topic have been opened: 1) in the context of Sloterdijk, the relation between the society, symbols and their mythological confirmation are examined, 2) the Palladian approach reveals the erosion of the forms for the purpose of material evidence on the lapse of time, and 3) provides the Scruton-like conclusion on the superimposed spatial experience. In that sense, Justiniana Prima, just like the stranded naves, scrapes the horizons on the architectural voyage planned long time ago, where the size of material insufficiencies is proportionate to mythological fullness of the designed sublimity
