Conjunction of Local and Global Processes Towards Qualitative Integrated Urban Development of Danube Region
We are witnesses of continuous and turbulent complexityprocess of urban development at every spatial level. The presence of infor-mation and communication technologies in every aspect of our life leads tothe fact that there is no more “delay” in between global and local changes. This conjunction changes the paradigm of urban development, which isnow in networking, communication and integration. This paper discussesthese relations described as hypothesis within Castells’ paradigm of net-work society and project identity that should be developed on local level inorder to be a part of – a node of global network, and to survive and developits potentialities and capacities. This paradigm is discussed in relation to C.Alexander’s, E. Howard’s, and P. Geeds’ approach in order to define princi-ples and steps of integration of different spatial levels toward more coher-ent, harmonized urban development. The research applies theoretical ap-proaches of networking towards integrated development of Danube region
Conceptual Approaches to Environmental Quality and Livability in Smaller Cities
Livable city means a city that can effectively meet the needs of its population regardless of age, gender, social situation or level of education. Many official rankings publish annually a list of the most suitable urban places for life, evaluated according to number of indicators including infrastructure and public transport, urban design and architecture, health and education system, safety and crime, climate, socio-economic and environmental problems, connections to nature, and others. Top 10 places ranked regularly are Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Adelaide, Sydney, Helsinki, Perth, Auckland . It is interesting to note that the geographic location and climate of these livable favorites is not ideal; the bad weather, snow, darkness and cold last for at least 6 months of the year. So which values prevail in the selection of people for the quality of life?
The issue of livability or as well the quality of life in the context of urban design and environmental quality and sustainability is of much interest of interdisciplinar academic research, more frequent since 1960ties. Street negation by modernists and the functionalist ideals of hygienic and lighted settlements supported the creation of impersonal high-rise buildings coupled by roads without active public spaces. As a reflection on modenistic principles in architecture and urban design and continued growth and preference for automobiles the new theoretical and practical works were born, such as Jane Jacobs voice calling for the cities humanization of or Jan Gehl´s theoretical approach and practical design for many great cities, which can be characterized as urbanistic humanism and the return of the city to its real users. Urban design is all about the human dimensions. Not about cars, industry or business. The quality of life has to be on the first place, followed up by space and buildings – other way round it does not work. If people perceive positively the city for their life, everything else will come gradually (Gehl, 2014). The quality of urban life is primarily concerned with the qualitative aspects of the city's life as a whole. Simply it is expressed as "friendly relations" of its inhabitants and visitors to the city and to the degree of infrustructural and urban amenities (Bašová, 2014).
Attempts are now being made to humanize cities, to increase their livability, to improve the public space for people and this way encouraging them to walk and cycle. Open public spaces are only attractive for users if there is a certain concentration of people. When an osmosis between open spaces and the city occurs – it is an osmosis of the human presence in the streets with the human presence in public spaces (Djukic et al.,2018). Factors such as the presence and quality of walkways, safety, isolation from disturbing traffic influences, distances, accessibility, creation of a mixed-function and attractive environment affect user preferences and ultimately affect health, environmental and economic benefits.https://issuu.com/danurb/docs/danurb__book-compressed_3e1d2b040869d
A Project-based Learning on Tensile Membrane Structures in Architectural Education
This paper presents a case study on the application of the project-based approach for learning on tensile membrane structures at an elective course at master studies of architecture. In order to improve the learning process and achieve course outcomes, over an extended period of time during the semester, students worked on a project, which task was to design a covering for a small pedestrian street. In small groups, students investigated applications of membrane installations, and how these structures could improve the quality of open urban spaces and solve environmental problems. The task engaged students in innovative and creative solving a real-world problem and dealing with functionality, feasibility, practicality, and ecology. The project was implemented through collaboration with scientific research project and company. This approach enabled students to understand the synthesis of structural analysis, material behavior, constructability, and economic reality that occurs in professional practice. Project-based method facilitated students to learn by working in (inter)active and inclusive environment, to investigate and respond to engaging and complex problems and challenges and thus develop a deeper understanding of the design, technical, and installation issues of tensile membranes. As a result, students developed deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in the context of doing an authentic, meaningful project.Рад изложен на међународном скупу ”FORM and FORCE - 60th Anniversary Symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures & 9th International Conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures” који је одржан у периоду од 7-10. октобра 2019. и штампан у целости у зборнику радова чији су уредници Carlos Lazaro, Kai-Uwe Bletzinger & Eugenio Onate
SAJ : Serbian architectural journal [21st ICA possible worlds of contemporary aesthetics: aesthetics between history, geography and media] [Part 2]
Belgrade hosted the 21st congress of the International Association for Aesthetics, held 22-26 July 2019 at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. The main topic of this year’s congress, which saw presentations by some 400 participants from 56 countries spanning Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, North America, and Australia, was Possible Worlds of Contemporary Aesthetics: Aesthetics between History, Geography, and Media. The congress in Belgrade was certainly an opportunity to briefly remind ourselves of the history of the Congresses of Aesthetics, the International Association for Aesthetics, as well as the character, status, and role of contemporary aesthetics in an open international context..
VP 11-13 [41. Salon arhitekture, 2019]
Urban regeneration in the historic core of Smederevo: a tool to redesign and network open public spaces for a prospective tourist destination
One of the main specificities of European cities is the richness in cultural heritage and historic layers.
This advantage has been profoundly used to develop many of them into high-class destinations for
cultural tourists. However, this process has been differently reflected across the continent. This is very
evident in traditionally more isolated Southern Eastern Europe, which is discovering this potential
right now. Hence, cities in this region need viable and efficient tools to accelerate it and catch a step
with the other European regions.
Urban regeneration is one of the most convenient tools for the cities with rich and dispersed cultural
heritage and historic fabric. It is a particularly useful tool in open public spaces, as they proactively
affect nearby environment. Therefore, the urban regeneration of open public spaces can both (re)
design crucial places in the city structure and network them to have a broad impact on the entire
city.
The aim of this research is to examine the previous statement in the City of Smederevo in Central
Serbia. Cultural heritage in Smederevo is abundant and the city is ideally positioned at the Danube,
an arising tourist route. Nevertheless, these potentials have not been adequately utilised to transform
the city into a new cultural tourism destination. The research intends to identify the main open
public spaces in Smederevo and propose new solutions for their redesign and networking. This is
implemented in accordance with the theoretical fundamentals of urban regeneration and current
assessment of the city historic core. The final intentions of the research are to present the variety
of possible ways to use urban regeneration as a medium for socio-economic redevelopment of
Smederevo, in favour of both local population and prospective tourists
Outside the planned mold. the (anti-)aesthetics of informality. case study of Belgrade
The aesthetics of unplanned and informal, as well as the other problems that informal growth emerges, are certainly among the most challenging tasks for the contemporary urban planning, urban design and architecture. Worldwide in developing countries, but especially in the Balkans, the unplanned shapes the urban landscape and imposes the unique, yet mostly unwanted visual environment. The unplanned and informal settlements escape from the local planning and architectural rules and norms, and avoid global trends and cultural affinities. The characteristics of the in - formal growth affect the city on micro and macro scale, reshaping the cityscape. The size, quantity and diversity of the informal buildings warn the professionals in urban planning and architecture not to turn the blind eye on it, and to reshape their concepts with regard to this specific ‘architecture without architects’. This paper aims to give an insight into the urban and architectural patterns that can emerge when regulations and plans are put aside, analyzing the way informal city areas can shape the urban and peri-urban environment. By showcasing a specific form of “urban aesthetics” characteristic to the Western Balkan region, and especially the Serbian capital - Belgrade, we delve into the realm of spatial elements that are shaped primarily by an average individual’s comprehension of space. The paper deals with examining the context in which a specific contemporary local community constructed its urban environment, identifying characteristic spatial elements that emerged as a result of building out - side the mold envisioned by the planning authorities and experts. The problems such a non-planning practice can cause are addressed through different spheres, with the focus mainly directed towards the utilitarian and stylistic elements of this unique type of urban environment
Textile membrane structures in refurbishment of built heritage
The aim of the research is to investigate the current developments in the use of textile membranes
in architecture. More precicely this research is focused on usage of textile membrane structures
in refurbishment of built heritage.
The main goal of the application of this type of structures is reafirmation of built heritage. The
idea is based on using this space for open air theaters and music events.
This research looks into options to find solutions which enable afirmation of historical places and
their new further usage by aplicating textile membrane structures. This will be done through
the following objectives: 1. defining textile membrane structures and other terms and concepts
important for understanding the research, 2. a historical overview of the beginning of the use
of membrane structures in refurbishment of built heritage, 3. defining set of requirements
that these structures in refurbishment of built heritage have to carry out, 4. case studies, 5.
systematization of applied materials, 6. systematization of textile membrane structures.
This would be 3-part research: 1. research of textile membrane structures and it’s application,
resulting with tipology of textile structures, 2. research of principles of built heritage protection
and presentation, resulting with set of requirements that textile membrane structure should
carry out, 3. case studies. This research is completed with examples of application of this
structures in Serbia in the context of built heritage protection and presentation
