Educational Projects for Linking Place Branding and Urban Planning in Serbia

    No full text
The influence of place branding in urban development has more importance than ever. Nevertheless, little attention is given to how place branding strategies are interrelated with planning, especially in post-socialist urban development. The purpose of this paper is to critically explore experimental educational projects conducted through cooperation between academia and local governments in Serbia, perceived as a simulation of strategic planning and place branding. We argue that educational projects hold power to create additional value in place and contribute to place branding by using a variety of planning and design instruments as a means of transformative spatial and social change both for communities and students as future planners. This paper uses theoretical exploration to develop reflective structural elements and a set of criteria essential to interlink strategic planning and place branding, thus providing a unique apparatus for the evaluation of educational projects. By emphasizing the possibilities and limitations of educational projects, the paper contributes to the theoretical advancement of place branding and strategic planning interlink and sheds light on the effects that those projects may have on spatial development and governance of the territory

Group form reconsidered : physicality and humanity of collective spaces

    Get PDF
In 1964, Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki presented the need for investigation in housing collective form. The need was explained through his sensitivity towards the dynamic change of society and simultaneous inadequacy of architectural static and fragmented respond. This paper presents the contemporary view on the theory of collective form and its investigation into why and how the group of buildings stands together. It brings forward the need for renewed architectural focus on group form, one of Maki's collective form types, and the social and human reasoning of design decisions. The theory of linkages in group form is related to more recent socio-spatial analytical theories and interpreted as an analytical tool for understanding housing morphologies, configurations, and its social capacity of group form. It is proposed that the morphological and configurational approach can be used in combination for reading and understanding the historical and contemporary housing ensembles and their relation to an urban whole. The aim of the theoretical research is the identification of the analytical framework and design principles of group form based on architectural and configurational elements and their relations, as socially and culturally relevant

    Studenica Marble: Significance, Use, Conservation

    Get PDF
Studenica marble is the stone used in creating the mediaeval Serbian cultural heritage. This is a historical overview of the importance and use of stone from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, when the most imposing religious architectural structures were built. The significance of Studenica marble is particularly manifested in the Virgin’s Church at the Studenica Monastery. For its marble façades and artistic architectural elements, among other things, the church was inscribed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1986. Through centuries, the Virgin’s Church suffered multiple destructions. In order to restore the marble façades properly and its architectural elements, the marble deposits where the stone was once quarried had to be located anew. When the stone material characterisation had been performed, the right stone was selected for the complex conservation works on the churches in Studenica and Sopocani. A practical implementation of the research results raised the awareness of the marble deposits in the Studenica vicinity, being also part of the national heritage. The Studenica Monastery Cultural Landscape Management Plan envisions preservation of the deposits and their sustainable use for restoration purposes in the future

The issue of preservation of traditional rammed earth houses: current practice of presentation in Serbia and region

    Get PDF
Traditional buildings are of great significance for exploring the architectural heritage and cultural identity. Created in the local context, reflecting the attitude of people towards the environment, these houses are built with traditional techniques and locally available building materials. In Serbia, in Vojvodina region, and other regional flat land there is a rich history of use of earth as a building material and a large number of traditional rammed earth houses to be held until today. Most of these buildings are still in use, but often trumble-down and failing to fulfill current living standards and needs. Because of that the need for preservation and renovation of traditional buildings is recognised as an important step in the process of their recognition as an important part of the architectural heritage of today. The problem is that the majority of traditional architectural heritage has not been officially designated as a cultural asset or a part of the cultural and historical sites, therefore it does not enjoy an adequate form of protection which can cause degradation of buildings identity during preservation processes. The main question of this research refers to appropriate ways of presentation of traditional architecture, in order to recognize and provide a better understanding of architectural heritage and cultural identity. Different approaches toward presentation of traditional buildings will be analysed trough current framework of protection practice and case studies both in Serbia and the region, pointing out possible problems and potentials in these actions as well as giving recommendations for future treatment of this type of buildings. This research aims to find solutions for adequate presentation of traditional buildings, pointing out their great significance of architectural heritage, and also it serves as an experience to improve our own relationship toward heritage in future work

Decentralised Mass Housing Policy in Socialist Yugoslavia

    Get PDF
The unique experiment of socialist state in the second Yugoslavia (1945-1991) had a profound impact in housing policy. Differently than in other socialist countries, decentralisation played a significant role. Housing followed this policy - it was heavily decentralised to regional and local tier. Therefore, these tiers developed and used their own housing norms and standards and thereby had different spatial reflections on urban fabric across Yugoslavia. However, Yugoslavia was still based on socialist ideology. Accordingly, multi-family neighbourhoods were often built for proletariat in Yugoslavia as the most advanced housing type. But, the aforementioned policy also caused decentralisation-led patterns in housing at urban level – these neighbourhoods were more numerous, but also smaller in size and scattered throughout urban area. The aim of this paper is to explain this process and spatial outcomes in multi-family housing through relevant theory and multi-case study. The study is carried on 6 medium-size cities in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. They share similar historic and spatial development. Thus, they are an adequate “polygon” to research separate approaches in situ, caused by decentralised housing policy. It is expected that the research will embrace how these approaches were reflected in concrete cases and which spatial characteristics can be usable for current trends in Serbian cities

Towards an authentic path: Structuralism and architecture in socialist Yugoslavia

    No full text
The breakup between socialist Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in 1948 paved the way for radical socio-political reforms as well as a new cultural model that would justify a newly invented Yugoslav socialist Sonderweg. In this context, Structuralism became a key vehicle for implementing the social and cultural values of the newly invented socialist self-management ideology. Structuralism helped shape the new culture via different fields and cultural approaches. This paper examines the origins and importance of Structuralism in architecture in the ideological and political context of Yugoslav socialism. As an avant-garde movement, Structuralism consequentially contributed to the critique of the then predominant functionalist paradigm of high modernism, resulting in a new direction that emphasised aestheticisation, a formal and semiotic approach, and the establishment of universal and archetypal values ostensibly derived from the exploration of vernacular architecture in Yugoslavia. Starting from the premise that all these values had a major impact on the construction of the mythology of authentic and autochthonous socialism, this paper shows how architectural Structuralism played a key role in shaping social and political authenticity and cultural mediation

The Urban Imprint of Post-socialist Projects in the Multi-family Housing of Cities in Vojvodina: between Regional Fundamentals and Local Strategies

    Get PDF
Urban development in post-socialist Europe has been marked with the collision between old, mainly socialist legacy and the rise of capitalism, further supported with globalization. These new influences have made an imprint in urban fabric, bringing the well-established patterns of urban development from the West. Nevertheless, this process is not a monolithic; it presents a variety of different approaches and strategies across pos-socialist Europe. A good example is the new, post-socialist multi-family housing in Serbia, which is basically formed on two important pillars; the first one is the decentralized housing policy of the former socialist Yugoslavia with many local customizations; the second pillar is deregulated housing market in present-day Serbia, strongly affected by the Yugoslavian Crisis from the 1990s. Multi-family housing has blossomed in Serbia since 2000, especially in middle-size cities. The aim of this research is to present the imprint of the new multi-family residential development in six middle-size cities in the Northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, considering their location in urban fabric and relation to the other types of housing. The comparison of six showcases is a key for the final conclusions about the importance of regional post-socialist influences in housing and their adaptations to local conditions

Digital Mini-museum as an Innovative and Affordable Presentation of Local Heritage for Tourists: Example from Serbia

    Get PDF
The use of innovative digital technologies in the presentation and promotion of cultural heritage has become an imperative for the arising destinations of cultural tourism. This is especially related to the cases where this heritage has some spatial and historic limitations to be consumed by prospective tourists. However, the use of digital technologies requires a lot of financial, organisational, and professional resources – a challenge for new destinations. Accordingly, the rare examples how to overcome this challenge should be presented as role-models. This paper exemplifies a Digital mini-museum in Niš, a city in Southern Serbia with rich history and tradition. The Museum has been developed by a staff and students from the local electronic faculty, aiming to show the affordable ways to promote local urban cultural heritage in limited conditions. Final conclusions target to underline the possibilities to merge the potentials of digitised cultural heritage and their affordability

The concept: a map for generations

    Get PDF
The concept features as a vital element in architectural protocol and its vocabulary. If architecture and philosophy are defined as creation of concepts, then they are the terra nullius shared by both disciplines. By distinguishing the architectural concept from its philosophical counterpart, this paper analyzes the former as an entity that animates and directs a project as the documental prefiguration of an architectural object. In a more radical move, we consider architecture itself as a concept, that is, what makes architecture what it is and what this discipline can become tomorrow. In addition to decisively participating in the process of generating an object yet to be constructed (the fetus of a building), on a correlative level, the concept has an essential role in theoretical self-thematization of architecture and guards the future of the architectural profession as an autonomous intellectual discipline
