The restorative effects of multi-sensory open space design – the example of Japanese gardens

    No full text
The primary health issues of modern urban lifestyle are stress-related and can lead to serious dam- age to both physical and mental wellbeing. In this context, the topic of restorative effects of natural elements in the paper aims to expand the knowledge base regarding different relations between the characteristics of urban design, sensorial aspects of space and their therapeutic and healing effect. Focusing on users’ multiple sensory dimensions, sensory parks emphasize the stimulation of various senses, en- hancing human communication with others, and positive emotional responses. Multi-sensory per- ception in a rehabilitation garden is closely related to the users’ sense of existence, emotions, emotional and existential awareness and the mental restorative effects. The methodology is based on the focused literature review regarding theoretical concepts such as Environmental psychology, Attention Restoration Theory, Place Attachment, Restorative gardens, etc. Also, this paper will present the case study analysis, including expert observation of good practice examples of Japanese gardens and open public spaces. Therefore, this paper will examine the theories and practical examples that show the therapeutic impact that the multi-sensorial approach can have and develop guidelines for successful urban design of sensory open space will be presented

    Get PDF
Past urban planning practices for embassy buildings have largely been indifferent to environments and the context of cities, oftentimes causing negative effects on the urban matrix. Implementing a more open, transparent building process for its diplomatic outposts overseas, Japan has managed to contribute to overall city development, quality of its public spaces and the image it holds in host countries. These processes will be examined and findings elaborated for the new Japanese embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, how utilizing such methodology presents an improvement, in engineering and urban planning terms, as well as a new method of cultural sustainability

Spoznavanje urbanih mesta - prevođenje kroz dijagrame

The continuous theoretical development of the research area of spatial cognition is not accompanied by the practical application of the set postulates. Research challenge is recognised within the development of an appropriate way to translate the conclusions and relations of spatial cognition into a clear graphic system that enables better communication and cooperation of related disciplines. The hypothesis of the paper is that the theoretical conclusions of the analysed concept can be translated into space through visual reinterpretation – graphic processing used as a tool for review and translation. The research is conducted in two parts - the first analyses the historical development of theoretical thought about the relationship of spatial cognition and diagrams in architecture, while the second segment explores contemporary theoretical standpoints through six characteristics of schematic reasoning and validates them through relevant case study. This research aims to examine and define the process of conceptualisation of diagrams in the context of assessing cognitive variables of space. The diagram develops from a simplified graphic indication of space into an active participant in the modification of the urban environment. Research outcome is the definition of four schematisation principles, which describe concise cognitive potentials for illustrating the impact of space on the user. Istraživanje se odvija u dva dela - prvi analizira istorijski razvoj teorijske misli o odnosu prostorne spoznaje i dijagrama u arhitekturi, dok drugi segment istražuje savremena teorijska stanovišta kroz šest karakteristika šematskog rezonovanja i validira ih kroz relevantnu studiju slučaja.

Geometrical Breakthrough in Contemporary Architectural Design: Meta-Materiality and Fragmentation

    Get PDF
The study relates two historical categories that were not previously associated in this manner. One concerns the role of geometry in the transformation of space in the Gothic architecture, where geometric line made the position of physical forces visible for the first time. The second transformation that sees the release of anxiety in challenging the perspective was done in Mannerism by instrumentalisation of the metaphor using visual means of deformation and figuration. Today we experience both historical moments in a modified form of appearance, still trying to give a formal character to the matter of materiality. As it is not possible, this approach has resulted in fragmentation in the absence of a unitary radical critique of modernity. Fragmentation and meta- materiality of contemporary architecture today represent a possible conceptualisation of space invoking all known forms of dematerialisation and disappearance of the world, including digitisation. Referring once again to the myths of the Tower of Babel, the Fall of Icarus, and the Wizard of Oz, in this experiment myth and discourse persist together, turning into the other and finding themselves in the other. Building architectural position between the extremes of the metamaterial and the fragmentary is a matter of breaking geometry of form and the idea of it.

Prodajni BPM lokal se nalazi u objektu u ul. Kralja Milana br.13 u Beogradu. The BPM sales office is located in the building at ul. Kralja Milan No. 13 in Belgrade. The BPM watch and jewelry showroom has been reconstructed in the existing dimensions, on the ground floor and gallery level. The adaptation project established a modern concept of a watch store showroom for the needs of investors. The basic concept of the functional organization of the space is the monitoring of the movement of users from the entrance, exhibition elements in showcases, the exhibition table for meetings and communication with clients, the sales counter, and the service and support areas in the building's gallery. All design work was carried out in order to improve the aesthetics and standards of the space - all floor coverings, all interior joinery, wall finishes, as well as the existing technical infrastructure were replaced. The original decoration was restored by finishing the ceiling. All newly designed furniture elements are conceived in a minimalist manner in order to achieve the effect of simplicity and aesthetic harmony. A cantilever wall was formed on a metal substructure made of stretched sheet metal, treated with natural aluminum, while the wall on the other side of the exhibition table was formed using the concrete painting technique. The newly designed appearance was formed with the intention of providing maximum transparency and visual accessibility of the premises' contents with minimal equipment and exhibits. The color range supports the aesthetics of the BPM company brand itself. The lighting design follows the concept of the interior - reduced to the function of exhibits, with lamps on the ceiling, a lamp on the pendant above the exhibition table, led strips that emphasize the wall surfaces and showcases. The intervention achieved the investor's need for an adequate presentation of the exhibits, both in the facade plane and throughout the environment, emphasizing the basic postulates of the watch industry - precision, refinement in the combination of materials and top design.Photography: Relja Ivani

    Get PDF
This research aims to open up a discussion about urban design competitions as a tool for collecting in-depth considerations and solutions for sites relevant to the local government unit. Research starts from the hypothesis that competitions are used as a part of an institutional and professional effort to maintain and provide sustainable use of heritage. The challenges that are set ahead planners are how to assure unique and site-specific solutions and still protect tangible and intangible heritage yet answer to the demands of sustainable urban development and reduce negative effects of globalization and neoliberal pressures perceivable in heritage degradation through marginalization, inadequate use, gradual decline due to unresolved ownership statuses and even overshadowing by and multiplication of identical patterns and forms. The paper will briefly review the Serbian planning context in relation to urban design competitions and consider its impact on urban development practice. The focus of the paper will be on researching the practice of initiation, evaluation, presentation, and implementation of several urban design competitions carried out for small and medium sized cities. Analysis of the above-stated stages of urban design competition could provide comprehensive insights into understanding the way how heritage is treated in different stages of planning and urban development process by different actors and institutions. This paper will argue for the value of urban competitions for a wider understanding of urban heritage, faced with various social and political pressures by recognizing specific values, their interpretation and providing a new lifespan for the inherited elements

With the notion that exhibitions, independently of their format or content, can always be considered as both discursive and visual platforms for the study of specific time periods, this research will provide an insight into a possible typology of architecture exhibitions that were organised socialist Yugoslavia between 1945 and 1991. The exhibitions in question were considered as collective activities, and they provide an insight into a wider context of social, economic, political and cultural events in Yugoslavia after World War Two as well as the status that architecture as practice held within them. Having in mind that we speak about various exhibitions with a large number of parameters according to which they were similar or different, this paper will point out the process of forming an exhibition typology in order to enable the classification for their systematic study. A specific study will be used to create the typology that will be applied in the process of researching the architectural exhibitions, their role and importance at the specific range in the specific time period.S obzirom na to da se izložbe, nezavisno od svog formata ili sadržaja, uvek mogu smatrati i diskurzivnom i vizuelnom platformom za proučavanje određenih vremenskih perioda, ovo istraživanje će dati uvid u moguću tipologiju izložbi arhitekture koje su organizovane u socijalističkoj Jugoslaviji između 1945. i 1991. godine.

    Oxygen [STRAND 2020]

    Get PDF
