The empty concept: (sur)realism of the virtual

    Get PDF
This dual title refers to the very production of and with the architectural concept. The technology of translating the architectural object from one form of existence into another, in successive and simultaneous projections, comprises the hyper-specificity of the methodology of the architectural project. '(Sur)Realism of the Virtual' indicates a possibility for a different understanding of the terms "virtual" and "realism" in the sense of destabilizing the "reality of the virtual' and introducing the novel into the very notion of the virtual. René Magritte explicitly demonstrated that the object never matches its projection, just as words do not match the text they explain. (Sur)Realism of the virtual refers to my idea of creating a new conceptual potential at the point of absence, lack or inexistence of the architectural object. In thematizing actualization or realization of the empty concept, I follow the ideas of Thomas Aquinas that all substances seek their own perfection and everything is directed towards their final end: a fully realized state ofexistence or actuality. A virtual field represents the necessary conditions under which real experience is actualized, such that actualization and the object belong to the virtual. All these relations explain processes of production of the architectural object and show nearly mathematically the differences among the modalities of the object's reality across diverse status: potential, act, movement, and force

The pleasures of not knowing: questioning the static nature of architecture

The architectural design process is not about controlling built structures and environments, but rather about anticipating events. Today, we are empowered to believe that we can resolve all design challenges. But sometimes, instead of solving issues (that probably we ourselves created in the first place), we might want to focus on eliminating the problem altogether during the process of design itself. Even though buildings are static in the way they are conceived and built, they still possess a dynamic feature, the most prominent being that of aging. Therefore, we can assume that architectural space is more about the processes of designing and building, then aging and eventually disappearing, and less about the finite, projected image of a designed object. In this regard, it is crucial that these design challenges are investigated and tested in actual environments. Experiments in designing structures can take us closer to grasping the elusive state of a physical object. This paper discusses the theoretical concept of temporality, arguing that the object is part of the design process itself. This opens a debate on the incompleteness of the design process focused on spatial potentials and structural possibilities. These issues were investigated through a series of workshops that questioned the static nature of architecture, in order to explore and widen the scope of the practice

Lost and Found: A Quest for Sustainability and Resilience in Rural Areas

Global trends of rapid and constant urbanisation are constantly revealing new societal, spatial and technological challenges, which naturally directs research focus towards urban areas. Urbanisation and imminent migrations, however, have significant repercussions on rural areas as well: exposure of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to decay, leading to extinction, can be identified as one of such processes that indirectly affect entire population, not only the scarce locals. In the quest for sustainable proposals tailored for small and fragile communities with notable architectural and cultural heritage, the W.A.Ve Abroad Workshop explored sustainable models of revitalization of the village Bebića Luka in the vicinity of Valjevo in Western Serbia. During the workshop which was held in Belgrade, Bebića Luka and Venice in June and July 2018, architecture students from Belgrade, Venice and Ljubljana were analysing the multiple layers of Bebića Luka’s present and past, trying to envision future scenarios and define adequate programmatic and design proposals. The workshop results included new models of activities, tailored to enable preservation of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the village through interactions between permanent and temporary residents, providing first-hand mutual exchange of specific knowledges. This process should expose local residents to some useful state-of-the-art concepts while directly transferring unique heritage of the village of Bebića Luka and the surrounding area to the visitors that will eventually return to urban areas. The workshop results were presented at IUAV University in Venice, during the final manifestations of the W.A.Ve 2018 Workshop in which more than 1500 students participated, which for the first time also included mentorship from teachers from five foreign universities. The paper presents an overview of the methodological approach, derived concepts and design proposals for variety of interventions: from retrofitting the existing facilities to development of new complementary physical structures designed in accordance with principles of circular economy and sustainable development

Interpretacija kao ideološki narativ: Partenon vs Novi akropoljski muzej

    Get PDF
U radu se istražuju fakori koji utiču na konstruisanje značenja arheoloških ostataka. Ispituje se na koji način promena konteksta utiče na transformaciju značenja nalaza. Predmet rada jeste komparativna analiza Partenona i Novog Akropoljskog muzeja Bernarda Čumija (Bernard Tschumi) u Atini.

Public-private interaction in low-rise, high-density Tokyo. A morphological and functional study of contemporary residential row-houses

    Get PDF
The focus of this paper is liveable, low-rise high-density urban morphologies of residential architecture and urban planning practices in Tokyo. Over the last several decades, historically established qualities in cities worldwide are increasingly sacrificed in favour of globalization–led ‘universal’ typologies. Tokyo is not an exception: it is gradually changing to a high-rise, high-density built city environment. From a morphological point of view, the paper demonstrates bioclimatic and cultural disadvantages of such developmental paradigm shift in Tokyo. Presented case studies elaborate upon the ways in which low-rise high-density environments and subsequent urban forms better facilitate human interaction and, consequently, can aid in reducing social isolation and contribute to mental well-being. Presented case studies, observed over the period of six years depict how residential environments created by row-houses can be seen as a collection of adjoining private spaces. The emphasis is on the interconnected set of phenomena: low-rise high-density morphologies, climate-responsive semi-exterior spaces, facilitating human and public-private interaction. The conducted morphological and functional analysis shows how design requirements of bioclimatic responsive semi-exterior space fully coincide with those of desirable public-private interface and human interaction. However, site-specific constraints critically affect spatial configurations of low-rise high-density developments in contemporary Tokyo, emphasizing the requirement for case-by-case attention in design and management of such places. Only design processes conscious of spatial management aware of the potential embedded in the design process can enhance socio-cultural interplay and bioclimatic performance

Osnovna ideja radionice jeste ispitivanje metodologije kombinovanja analognih tehnika crtanja i digitalne prezentacije u procesu transkripcije prostora, na primeru grada Rijeke. Korišćenjem virtuelnih načara (VR headsets) cilj radionice je bio da svimpolaznicima i stanovnicima grada Rijeke ponude novu perspektivu različitih gradskih prostora.Augmented Experience is a two-week workshop held at 2018 European Architecture Students Assembly RE:EASA 2018 in RIjeka, Croatia. The aim of the workshop is to explore the potential of combining analog and digital techniques of drawing and possibilities of using virtual reality infrastructure in architecture, as well as offering the residents of the city of Rijeka a whole new perspective of some of the important and well-known locations in the city. Workshop methodology consists of capture the 360x180 degrees panoramic views of different locations in Rijeka and transcribing them into an architectural drawing. Afterwards, as a new picture representing the same space, the final drawings are returned into virtual space to question the results

Trends in New Multi-Family Residential Development in Serbia: Overview by Local Urban Professionals

The field of housing has undergone significant changes during the challenging post-socialist transition. Serbia has been a somewhat different case in the way that its transition was postponed and more complex. Conversely, its housing also carries the legacy of the more developed former socialist Yugoslavia. This dichotomy can easily be observed in the case of the newly-built, “transitional” multi-storey housing. However, the data relating to its characteristics is rare and insufficiently accurate. The aim of this chapter is to improve the research of the urban dimension in newly-built multi-family housing in Serbia, regarding housing planning in the new master and detailed urban plans for Serbian cities. This has been researched by analyzing the professional knowledge and experience of local experts. Therefore, the method used in the research was survey, in which urban experts had participated. It had been carried out in May 2015

The Textuality of the Modernist Rural Landscape: Belgrade Agricultural Combine (PKB) as a Driver of the Urban Development of Third Belgrade

    Get PDF
This paper considers the landscape as both a material and an ideological representation and starts from the assumption that spatial patterns arise as a result of the ideological imperative of the process that forms the landscape. The research takes on a historical-interpretative approach in the domain of architectural and urban studies, enabling in-depth qualitative exploration of the textuality and layering of the modernist rural landscape through a case study of the PKB Agricultural Combine as a driver of the urban development of Third Belgrade, the spatial framework of the left riverbank of the Danube in the administrative area of Belgrade. The research was conducted by chronologically interpreting primary sources, notably planning documents of different levels and scope, as well as studies, programs and development models for the urbanization of this territory. The research aims to decode the impact of socialist agrarian policy on the land-use in the wider metropolitan area of Belgrade, as well as the impact of the agricultural combine as a spatial, social, economic, environmental and political entity on the urban development process at different spatial levels. The research has identified four periods in the development of Third Belgrade: (1) Production of the Modernist Rural Landscape, (2) Establishment of the Self-Management Planning Framework, (3) Humanization of Environment, and (4) Post-socialist Transition and the Collapse of the Agricultural Combine. The paper demonstrates not only that environmental transformation cannot be separated from social transformation but also that they are in constant interaction and that their synergy has had a profound impact on the development of the PKB Agricultural Combine system in socialist conditions. The textuality of the modernist rural landscape confirms that an object-oriented approach is not enough to explore and interpret the landscape, but rather, we should look at the way it is socially produced through decoding the planning, institutional and policy frameworks determining the urban development of a territory
