(Open International Competition for Standard Housing and Residential Development Concept Design) The research that is conducted in this paper aims to investigate the potentials of complex housing configurations for designing and developing contemporary, dynamic neighborhoods. Research is conducted for the purpose of participating in an Open International Competition for Standard Housing and Residential Development Concept Design in Russia, organized by the Strelka Institute in December of 2017. The paper develops a comparative theoretical analysis of housing types in Russia and Yugoslavia of the second half of XX century, (Khrushchyovka residential developments and New Belgrade housing) with the aim of constructing a platform, and a departure point for contemporary housing Models. This research sees the potential in selecting and combining specific aspects of modernist housing doctrine for contemporary housing models, through composing complex, hybrid configurations. Theoretical position for hybridity as a post-typological condition in architectural discourse is also developed in the paper. In this case, hybridity is considered both in the context of the program, as in the context of the form (vertical and horizontal). This paper argues that contemporary living implies new methods and models of housing that transgress conventional typological practices and involves complex configurations in order to address the contemporary needs of everyday life. Presented research questions the status of prefabricated, over-defined structures of Khrushchyovka residential developments, opening the topics of duration, sustainability and inherited types of living in the context of adaptive capacity for contemporary dwelling needs. The above-explained comparative research is further developed as a research by design through the competition proposal. The design proposal is developed as a spatial principle that, depending on the spatial circumstances, can be combined and organized in different configurations. Therefore, three suggested types are developed as variations of the principle

Preovlađujući savremeni kriterijum urbanog razvoja - kriterijum ekonomske ispla-tivosti pojedinačnih lokacija, nameće redukovane tipologije i unificirane strukture u novogradnji i rekonstrukciji postojećeg tkiva. Тhe prevailing modern criterion of urban development - the criterion of economic profitabil-ity of individual locations, imposes reduced typologies and unified structures in new construction and reconstruction of existing tissue. In such circumstances, protected urban areas are a reser-voir of diversity for urban activities such as housing, culture, recreation, and even work. This paper analyses (a) the models of urban protection, as well as the relations to the housing typology and basic urban parameters planned for residential tissue, as set out in the main strategic urban plans of Belgrade since 2000, and then (b) the relations between the built and protected areas on the one hand and the process of uniformization of residential assemblies on the other, on selected examples of urban reconstruction and new construction, built according to the plans of detailed elaboration in the same period. The aim of this research is to show the importance that the urban heritage protection has in the domain of conservation and improvement of the diversity of structures, typologies, functional schemes and other important aspects of urban space, which directly affect the increase of quality and possibilities of choice for life in cities and as such represent a legitimate contemporary topic of public interest of all citizens. The concluding remarks summarize the problems and potentials of the contemporary approach in the planning of residential zones and housing units, in order to coprehend the con-sequences that such a trend leaves on the style and quality of urban housing.Suorganizator konferencije: Institut za arhitekturu i urbanizam Srbij

Visions of Architecture in the Context of Environmental Aesthetics [abstract]

    No full text
Environmental aesthetics is one of the most important areas in the development of modern aesthetics. Today’s beliefs about the fragility of nature and the critical consequences of human activity, primarily urbanization and pollution of the environment in which we live, have contributed to the growing awareness of the importance of preserving nature and its resources. Many sciences and disciplines, including architecture, conduct their research in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Environmental aesthetics is based on the principles of sustainable development, considering all forms of environment: natural, built and social environment. Although the main topic of environmental aesthetics is the natural environment, the research in this paper is primarily focused on architecture as a type of specific environment created by man. The aim of this paper is to consider the visions of architecture through critical examination of architectural theory and practice in the context of environmental aesthetics, examining the relations of sensory experience of architecture, relations of architecture and theory, relations of architecture and other arts, as well as relations of architecture, science and tech- nology. One of the key results of the paper refers to the critical and aesthetic observation of architecture, not from the usual angle of architecture as a visual art, but from the point of view of the architectural and urban environment. Theoretical consideration of architecture from the standpoint of environmental aesthetics is one of the most important challenges nowadays, precisely because architecture today occupies large areas of our planet given the constant growth of urbanization and urban development whose consequences require architects and experts to provide humane and sustainable solutions which will preserve, protect, improve and maintain all types of environ- ments: natural, urban and social. The aesthetics of the environment today is one of the key cultural positions from which society, art, science and technology form a common language for a better and sustainable future

Creating a Digital Atlas for Heritage Cities and Towns along the Danube

    Get PDF
The traditional meaning of an atlas has changed recently, with the prompt rise of digitalisation. This process has also opened new perspectives to collect and present atlas data; the interconnection of the huge quantities of the different data sets, including the new types of data and introducing atlases with new topics as an innovation. The essential meaning of an atlas has been, however, preserved even in its digitalised version – to present spatially related phenomena and items thorough their mapping. The aim of this paper is to discuss about the structure of a digital urban atlas on the example of the creation a new one – the digital atlas of heritage cities and towns along the Danube, one of the main deliverables of DANUrB+ INTERREG Project. This atlas, planned in both hardcopy and digital versions, is still in progress; hence, the main contribution of the paper is to show the expected structure of the digital DANUrB+ Atlas by comparing the project inputs with several already existing digital urban atlases as role-models

Lost in projection – Implicit features experience of 3D architectural forms and their projections

The aim of our study was to investigate whether the experience of objects’ implicit features would change if we observe it as a real 3D object or as a photograph or a drawing. In our experiment 46 participants estimated their impression of 10 objects shown in four different presentations. As stimuli, we used 3D objects, their virtual reality models, photographs and drawings from four different viewing directions, created by architecture students. As a measure of implicit features experience we used 12 bipolar adjectives grouped into four factors (attractiveness, regularity, arousal, and calmness) and 3 adjectives forming aesthetic experience factor. Results show significant differences between types of object presentations on four factors of implicit features experience, but not on the aesthetic experience factor. Real 3D objects were experienced as more attractive and calm, while VR presentation showed reduced arousal than other presentation types. On regularity VR and real 3D objects were experienced as same and more regular then drawings and photographs

Reprogramming Modernist Heritage: Enhancing Social Wellbeing by Value-Based Programming Approach in Architectural Design

    Get PDF
This paper is built on the assumption that architecture is the establishment of the relationship between past and future, built and unbuilt, within the inherited and natural context and in direct connection with the overall culture. Unlike a traditional approach to heritage generally limited to considering only the visible values of the place, this research stands on the belief that, in the context of heritage, the implementation and application of behavioral knowledge in architectural discourse contributes to the intensification and enhancement of these relations. In accordance with the need to re-examine existing and explore new forms of the relationship between future life of heritage and social wellbeing, the main goal of the research is to examine the possibility of improving this relationship through a value-based architectural programming methodological framework. This paper was conducted through: (1) theoretical framework that intertwines environment–behavior theories and architectural programming as the value-matrix methodology for the reuse of heritage; (2) exploring the established framework through design results gathered within the design-based studio on “heritage reprogramming” at the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture with a particular focus on the modernist architectural heritage; and (3) discussing the overall principles through the multiscale and value-based approach. The evaluation of the results indicates the possibility of improving the social dimension of heritage protection and reuse, as well as the need to shift the focus from exclusively material and formal values of heritage to social and cultural aspects in accordance with the needs of contemporary society and culture. Results indicate that the multidimensional nature of architectural programming methodological approach in the context of modern heritage and, accordingly, the synergy of different programming values (environmental, human, social, systemic, temporal, economic, aesthetic) provides sustainable access to heritage and has the capacity to improve the social wellbeing of individual users but also of the wider communit

The illustration depicts the dramatic period of the corona virus pandemic: "The end of this year is approaching. We have rejected the past, and we do not see the future yet. Our footsteps disappear into the night. We roam the wastelands of darkness. Our hope lives on until morning. We no longer hear our heart. Our hands are cold and petrified. We are silent. All great words die. Hypnotized, we wait for dawn..." The work was shown at the traditional exhibition "Tzompantli: Artistic Reflection", which was held in 2021 at the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin, Texas
