Enabling architecture through technology: overview of smart home technology systems and devices as support for people with disabilities and the elderly [abstract]

    No full text
The rapid development of digital technologies and their application in various aspects of everyday life have led to the emergence of smart homes. Smart homes are not merely technological achievements; they represent a step toward a new way of living, where comfort, safety, and assistance converge to create an environment tailored to the individual needs of each user. The Internet of Things (IoT) technically supports this housing concept, integrating various devices and systems within the living space. Older people and people with disabilities often face obstacles that threaten their independence and safety in their own homes. In the context of an ageing global population and increasing needs for disability support, smart homes equipped with advanced systems for monitoring, automation, and assistance have the potential to enhance the quality of life for these groups. In architectural discourses, integrating smart home technology with architecture to enable the adequate use of spaces has yet to be covered, pointing out a notable research gap. The aim of this research is to understand these technologies and their specific applications in supporting people with disabilities and the elderly through a lens of architects. This paper will methodologically review literature focused on smart home technologies and assistive technologies, as well as research examining smart home technologies as assistive technologies. It will define the main challenges faced by people with disabilities at home and identify the technologies that overcome those challenges. The results include a systematization of technologies based on the problems they address, impact of these technologies on users, along with a discussion and conclusion on the potential of these technologies in architecture. The results aim to serve as a foundation for further research on this topic through scientific papers and projects

Creative Industries for Rural Settlement Regeneration: A Case Study of the Village of Medna

    No full text
While creative industries are typically associated with big cities, recent EU research shows that famous creative hotspots are located in rural areas. Creative industries serve an essential role in helping rural economies. Culture can play an important part, and so can offering creative courses in rural areas that are far from universities and cultural hubs. Rural areas boast a combination of natural and architectural heritage, which gives them an advantage in terms of quality of life and economic potential. Yet, most rural areas in Europe have been faced with economic, social and environmental problems, resulting in their devastation. The village of Medna is located in the Municipality of Mrkonjić Grad, the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This area has been continuously inhabited since pre-Roman times, as evidenced by many archaeological sites, the medieval stećci tombstone graveyards and the Prizren fortress. Also, the Roman Salona–Servitium road passed through the area. The village boasts fine examples of vernacular architecture, an important element of the local cultural identity. It is also known for its honey products and fruit brandy (plum, pear, apple). The area is faced with depopulation, a lot of the building heritage has collapsed or is derelict, and the extraction of ore in the village is leading to an ecological crisis. This paper deals with the possibility of rural regeneration of the village of Medna by identifying its potential and proposing innovation economic activities to ensure sustainable development. It presents a project done with architecture students of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy at Banja Luka University. The case study of village Medna focused on the excellence of the preserved local cultural and natural heritage to identify the local resources – the area’s distinctive elements and characteristics – for creative economy stimulation. The Medna regeneration strategy involves raising the awareness of the local population about the value of the local heritage and disseminating this information to the wider community

Urban growth, shrinkage, and revitalisation shaped by the Danube: the case of towns in the lower Danube region in Serbia

    No full text
Being the most international river all over the world, the Danube has an immense influence on cities and towns on its shores. However, this influence is the strongest in the Danube sections where the other natural resources, such as a good inland connectivity or fertile plains and valleys in background, are more limited. This is the case for six towns located in the Lower Danube Region in Serbia – Veliko Gradište, Golubac, Donji Milanovac, Tekija, Kladovo, and Brza Palanka. They are mainly located in the Iron Gates, the longest gorge of the Danube. Narrow Danube Shores and isolating mountainous hinterland with limited resources have shaped the destiny of these towns inseparably connected to this powerful river. Their growth, shrinkage, and revitalisation have relied on the prospects of the Danube thereof. This symbiosis has also shaped the local economy, urban facilities and demographic trends of these towns, which has further reflected on their urban morphology. The aim of this paper is to present this unique urban growth and shrinkage these six Serbian towns shaped by the Danube of during pre-socialist period, i.e., in 19th and the first half of 20th century

Developing a Training Dataset for Deep Learning Models for Apartment Layout Generation [abstract]

    No full text
In recent years, there has been a rise in the development of automated apartment layout generation tools, demonstrating the increasing demand for resource efficiency and improved spatial organization in housing architecture. This study focuses on the apartment layouts from the Belgrade School of Housing (1960s–1980s, Yugoslavia), known for its exemplary architectural practices. The aim of this study is the creation and development of a dataset for training deep learning (DL) models for automated apartment layout generation. Given that many original layouts exist only in analogue format, the study introduces a protocol for dataset creation: (1) data collection and selection, (2) data digitization, (3) unified graphic language formation, (4) data augmentation, and (5) data compilation. The outcome of this study is a cohesive dataset for training and testing DL models, primarily Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Finally, the created dataset is tested through the apartment layout generation process. The main contribution of this study is a set of instructions for dataset creation that can facilitate data-driven design. This provides an opportunity for highly effective architectural concepts to be revived into a new design process powered by DL models. In future research, the universality of this dataset can be verified using different DL models

New Pedagogical Guidelines: The Book “Joyful Cities: Urban Regeneration Revisited”

    No full text
Authors of this paper just wrote and published a new and a rather experimental form of a book which will be primarily used as a literature on Urban Renewal course at Faculty of Architecture University of Belgrade. This book entitled Joyful cities: urban regeneration revisited has a broader purpose: to empower and facilitate modern approach in education and to help students to develop a critical thinking mindset. Also, to become a part of that pedagogical tool: the textbook itself. Additionally, the book is developed by sharing principle: lead by full professor and followed by an ass. professor in a role of both editors and chapter authors, while the individual chapters of the same book are written by other co – authors, each an expert in their fi led. All of the chapters are gathered around the topic of the future city, or as the authors sees it, the joyful city. In that sense, the topics covered in the book go from the main urban problems, such as slums and segregations, through the issue of innovation, participation and infrastructure, ending with the topics that uncover the secret of wellbeing today and the core of the city – its soul. The students played a crucial role in development of this book. Didactics (learning by note talking) is almost abandoned today. In that sense, the book is an unusual way to spread the knowledge based on the new principle of direct coordination and unformal link between students and professors, encouraging them to be not only the participants, but the idea makers in the academic and pedagogical fi elds
