    Designing Shrinking Danubian Cities

    Get PDF
MANY CITIES ALONG THE DANUBE RIVER are shrinking cities, which is also becoming a common pattern across Eastern and Central Europe. Of several possible reasons, e.g., low accessibility, the pull of nearby larger cities and low birth rates, the most important one is the deindustrialisation after the fall of communist systems, which led to the decrease of jobs and a mass migration (Hospers, 2014). The population decrease led to the degradation or disappearance of several public services and later the abandonment or underuse of buildings or large city areas (Păun Constantinescu, 2019). Considering the current condition of shrinking cities, it could be concluded that this method is no longer feasible, and it should be substituted with a ‘tabula plena’ approach (Roberts, 2016). Such an intervention implies the reuse of urban areas, re-building, recycling, regenerating brownfields and restoring local built heritage (Fig. 45_01). The local identity should be a cornerstone to all interventions, in most cases the Danube being a key feature

GOOD URBAN LIFE Actions [BINA 2022]

    No full text
GOOD URBAN LIFE Actions 2022 are hosted as a special BINA programme. Following last year’s roundtable, successfully held at the Cultural Centre of Belgrade, where participants of various backgrounds discussed Good Urban Life, actions aim to put in place urban interventions on pressing issues. Therefore, this Good Urban Life edition is leaving the indoor venue to dive into the urban fabric of streets, forests, urban gardens, playgrounds, and leftover public spaces. Together with partners, involved in the previous edition of the Good Urban Life, a series of interactive formats are carried out at several locations in Belgrade. These actions will respond to selected pressing topics relevant to the quality and experience of public urban life. The programme includes five important topics related to the urban realm: HEALTH (health preservation), CARE (care for environment and people), URBAN FOOD PRODUCTION/CONSUMPTION (food demand), PLAY (playful interaction), and DIGITALITY (digital augmentation and application)

    Peace [54.

Lessons from passive systems of vernacular architecture for contemporary construction

    Get PDF
Vernacular architecture (in Serbia) is characterized by a lack of technology, and therefore demands for the use of passive systems that would improve the comfort of the users of the space. The strategies on the basis of which the objects were designed, built and improved were based on several bases: geographical characteristics, the influence of the sun and wind, orientation, the function of the object, the geometry of the form in relation to the local materials and the possibility of execution - that is, the construction technologies available in a given place in the observed time. With reference to the date criteria, it is clear that the strategies directly depend on the construction location. With industrialization come new materials - such as glass, concrete and steel. They affect different ways of execution and design, but they also bring with them higher energy consumption and requirements regarding construction technology. The lack of non-renewable resources, the economic crisis and global warming forced us to take a step back and think about passive systems that would enable the most sustainable possible behavior of buildings in modern architecture with innovative technology, help preserve the environment, use renewable energy sources, and reduce consumption. and the financial dependence of facilities, a lower rate of embedded carbon. This research deals with the review of literature on the subject of vernacular architecture, the knowledge that can be extracted from it and passive systems in construction - in order to establish the basic points of energy saving (maintenance) and passive systems (principles) on the basis of which it is possible to further learn from the historical scope. architecture and construction for a green future

Instrumentalization of Mapping in Architecture: Interpretation of Urban Discourse

Research in the field of spatial cognition has made a significant contribution to the topics of perceptual cognition and processing of cognitive data; however, there is an unjust neglect of the topic of space and the influence of contextual determinants on the cognitive process. Understanding the complex character of the urban context requires modern tools that focus not only on the built environment, but also on the interdependence of perceived elements of space. Mapping is recognized as an adequate tool because it interprets urban structures that are relevant to architectural discourse within the context in which they are located. In analyzing the chronological development of thematic mapping as a need for a better understanding of the context and the emergence of different concepts of spatial cognition in the 1960s, spatial schematization is recognized as a tool that supports research through space, emphasizing the importance of territorial aspect in spatial cognition. Research outcome is a synthesys diagram of the process of spatial conceptualization based on cartographic principles, with the aim of defining and illustrating the speed, intensity and key points of the development of urban discourse.

Possibilities for implementing principles of a circular economy in the reconstruction and adaptation of buildings in Serbia

    Get PDF
The circular economy is a new economic model which provides the necessary goods and services for maintaining and improving living standards without increasing the consumption of raw materials and waste. The traditional model of the linear economy is viewed as an unsustainable long-term solution because it does not take waste treatment into account, and thus the impact on the environment. The European Union has recognized this problem and obliged its members to apply the circular economy model as a strategy for a climate-neutral, resource-efficient, and competitive economy. By adopting the European Green Deal at the Western Balkans Summit, the Republic of Serbia has committed itself to abide by the new growth strategy, which includes the application of the circular economy in all industrial sectors. The construction industry is one of the most environmentally harmful industries in the world, with a direct impact on the use of raw materials, life cycle of buildings, and the overall environment. The paper explores the circular economy concept, its principles, and possibilities for implementation, both at the national level of the Republic of Serbia and the level of the European Union. The role of the circular economy in the construction industry has been examined through the analysis of legislation currently in force with regard to the treatment of construction materials and waste. This paper aims to highlight the importance of employing the circular economy in the Republic of Serbia, as well as to define guidelines for its further implementation, especially in the reconstruction and adaptation of buildings

Promoting bio-based building materials as a means of bridging the urban-rural divide in Serbia

    Get PDF
Due to the difficult economic situation within Serbia, rural areas find themselves on the margins of investment and development, creating a deep rural-urban divide. Much of Serbia can be characterized as rural with a large segment of the population living in rural settlements defined by socio-economic stagnation or degradation. Revitalizing rural regions is thus important for the socio-economic wellbeing of the entire country and mitigating the rural-urban divide can be key to the sustainable development of urban areas. Much of the built environment in Serbia has a low level of energy efficiency and though public perception has improved, the focus is on improving operational energy, while the embodied environmental impact of building materials is rarely considered. This paper details and analyses the main problems facing rural areas in Serbia. As agriculture is still the primary economic activity in rural areas, it suggests that the development and application of bio-based building materials created from the by-products of agriculture, can be an important element of further strategies for sustainable development in Serbia. In particular industrial hemp, which was once an important and abundant crop in Serbia, is currently experiencing a significant resurgence. This paper demonstrates that hemp-lime concrete may be a particularly suitable building material for encouraging new economic activity in rural areas and promoting sustainable design in both rural and urban areas

Domestico Bakery Interior Design [STRAND 2022]

    Get PDF
The main focus of the interior, through which brand recognition is built, is the sales section. Using Domestico colors and motifs in the design, the interior is composed of flat, linear and circular geometric forms, which in their appearance contribute to the scenic nature of the tasting and sales space. The goal was to move away from the stereotypical experience of a bakery and create an exhibition space aimed at presenting characteristic products and craftsmanship. Overlapping spatial zones simultaneously contributes to greater transparency of production and communication with customers on a sensory level (overlapping smells, tastes, visual experiences, touch).Rad je prikazan u delu publikacije - Nasl. str. prištampanog teksta: Philosophy of Architecture : exhibition book

Review of Analytical Tools and Design Approaches in Architectural Heritage Higher Education: Sharing HERSUS Project Experiences

    Get PDF
This paper builds on the experiences of the Erasmus+ project titled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS), coordinated by the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture as a leading higher education institution, with partner institutions of Universita Iuav di Venezia, University of Cyprus – Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – School of Architecture and the University of Sevilla – UNESCO Chair on Built Urban Heritage CREhAR in the digital era. The paper will provide systematic review of analytical tools and design approches derived from the Statements for teaching through design for sustainability of the built environment and heritage awareness (Third Intellectual Output of HERSUS Project). The Design Tools implies a driving and operational element of a design process applied systemically to achieve a design goal and solve a design problem. Although very often considered exclusively as a technical and procedural entity of design, Tools have become both social instruments in the design process (collaborative Tools) and a digital innovation in design (3D and simulation Tools), thus significantly contributing to the contemporary practice of architectural heritage research encouraging an entirely new view of its analysis, valorisation, documentation, and redesign

The competition proposal follows four fundamental principles aiming to create an authentic, locally specific and self-sustaining cultural district. The principles of development are (1) Sensitivity and historical layering, which implies minimal interventions with maximum respect for the inherited structure, physiognomy of space and character of the place, (2) Networking and continuity of space and programs, achieved by integrating the urban matrix, securing temporal continuity and encouraging social integration, (3) New nature, which implies responsibility towards nature and people, and as such directs interventions towards the globally defined sustainable development goals (SDG) and (4) Realization in phases, taken as an element of the spatial-economic concept, which strives to contribute to the financial- logistic project feasibility.1.
