3D Printing Technologies in Architectural Design and Construction: A Systematic Literature Review

    Get PDF
The proliferation of digital technologies considerably changed the field of architecture. Digital fabrication pushes architecture into an unexpected new domain of previously unachievable complexity, detail, and materiality. Understanding these technologies’ impact can help direct future research, innovate design and construction processes, and improve the education of future professionals. However, comprehensive reviews offering a holistic perspective on the effects of 3D printing technologies on architecture are limited. Therefore, this study aims to provide a systematic review of state-of-the-art research on 3D printing technologies in architectural design and construction. The review was performed using three major databases, and selected peer-reviewed journal articles published in the last ten-year period were included in quantitative and qualitative analyses. Using bibliometric analysis, the research progress is summarized through the identified trend of the annual number of articles, prominent authors and co-authorship network, and key topics in the literature organized in three clusters. Further, content analysis of selected articles enabled coding cluster themes. Moreover, the analysis differentiated two categories of 3D printing technologies based on the scale of the system, elaborating their peculiarities in terms of materials, methods, and applications. Finally, challenges and promising directions for future work and research challenges are discussed

Digital environments and spatial information systems: new conceptual and operative determinants and arguments of the design intelligence strategic approach to spatial questions in the context of convergent spatial research and design

    No full text
Rad konstruiše diskusiju na temu koncepcijskih i operativnih determinanti digitalnih prostorno-informacionih i inteligentnih sistema i platformi na osnovu argumenata objavljenih u radu „Location intelligence dynamics and complexity: the questions of design strategy”. To uključuje i pitanje definicija i kvalifikacija novih stručnih profila za kritičku i projektno zasnovanu nadgradnju digitalnih okruženja, njihovih parametara i funkcija. Kao teorijski okvir predložena je paradigma konvergencije svih prostorno-orijentisanih disciplina (integracije prostornih istraživanja i dizajna) čije perspektive iniciraju novo promišljanje teorije i projektovanja digitalnih okruženja, prostora, informacionih ili inteligentnih sistema i procesa. Konstruišući širi plan svakog digitalnog i analognog prostorom-određenog pitanja, paradigma ističe prvenstvo mišljenja u krosdisciplinarnim terminima, ne zanemarujući i svaki pojedinačni registar i domen aktiviranih disciplina. U tom kontekstu, dizajn instrumenti, dizajn-strateški pristupi, idejna rešenja i načini realizacije različitih prostorno-informacionih formata ponuđeni od strane discipline arhitekture, provereni su na integrativnom planu prostornih istraživanja i dizajna i u susednim disciplinarnim ravnima.Based on arguments published in the paper “Location intelligence dynamics and complexity: the questions of design strategy,“ this study introduces a discussion on conceptual and operational determinants of digital spatial information and intelligence systems and platforms. Aside from important conceptual and operational refinements that have been registered and proven necessary herewith, the main reason for further investigation emerged as a result of accordance between the design-based discourse and claims of this article and innovative programmes proposed by official professional institutions and academic representatives, having been initiators of new international education, science, and research policies in this field. In addition to recognizing design-based orientation as the one that will lead their next phase of improvement, digital spatial platforms and performances have been called into question in terms of their deployment in educational and professional settings. On that level, a question has been raised regarding adjustments of new research and development results for educational and professional contexts, involving the whole network of professions required for digital operation of spatial tasks and problems. Such integration of spatial sciences and disciplines requires the definition of new professional profiles having the capacity and qualifications for critical and design-based problem-solving in digital environments, as well as upgrades to their parameters and functions. The paradigm of spatial research and design convergence has been proposed as a framing one based on the fact that its perspectives initiate rethinking of the digital environment, space, information and intelligence systems and processes theory and design. Despite assigning priority to cross-disciplinary thinking, this paradigm does not disregard single registers of each active discipline. In this respect, architectural design instruments, strategic approaches, and conceptual solutions for various spatial information formats can be tested at the level of spatial design and research integration and in adjacent disciplinary fields.ISBN broj u publikaciji se razlikuje od ISBN broja u CIP-u

Urban Strategies for Dense and Green Zurich: From Healthy Neighbourhoods towards Healthy Communities?

    No full text
Contemporary healthy urban development goes beyond the traditional emphasis on individual well-being toward a more systemic approach to health: the notions of equity, inclusion and sociospatial justice are at the centre of such an approach. Using the lens of urban health to explore socio-spatial complexity in Zurich makes an interesting case, given that cooperative (urban) planning is considered a norm in the Swiss spatial planning policy. Set between cooperation as the principal normative value in the legislative and regulative Swiss planning framework and the practical evidence that sometimes lacks the implementation of these values, and using an in-depth case study analysis of the Koch Areal, this paper critically examines the planners’ position and skills in the process of urban densification; the approach applied and values promoted by developers; the strategies by the local community in protecting local identity and needs; the relationship of city officials towards both the (local) public and investors. The findings point to the advantages and shortcomings emerging from the stakeholders’ encounter, finally questioning the essence of cooperative planning, and outlining the current state of Zurich’s urban development strategy on the trajectory towards an intrinsically healthy city.58th ISOCARP World Planning Congress : From Wealthy to Healthy Cities ; In Search of a New Planning Agenda for Urban Health, Socio-Spacial Justice and Climate Resilience, 21-22 September (online) and 3-6 October 2022, Brussels, Belgiu

Introducing Shrinking Cities from Global Perspective

    No full text
Despite the fact that we have the largest population so far and that many cities are growing rapidly, Europe has been losing population since the second half of the 20th century. The shrinking cities is a phenomenon caused by low birth rates, deindustrialisation, and political changes in the 1990s. Although industrialisation enabled rapid population growth, it also initiated the population reduction with the economic crisis, pollution, reduction of housing comfort and safety. This phenomenon became extremely massive in almost all parts of the world (Fig. 11.11), 42% of the largest urban areas in Europe recorded a population decline, which led to the perception of this issue as a global sensation (Richardson & Nam, 2014)

Novi arheološki park predstvlja prostorni palimpsest – slojeviti ambijent različitih potencijala i reprezentacionih osobina.

The Conversion of Office Buildings into Hotels in the Historic District: Legislative Benefits

    Get PDF
Conversion, as a type of building adaptation, is becoming an increasingly common kind of architectural practice in many cities. Various aspects of this topic are the subject of numerous analyses and research interests, mostly, focused on drivers and obstacles of the conversion process. Although the conversion is still not sufficiently present in modern construction practice in Belgrade, several office building conversions to luxury hotels were completed on the territory of the central historic districts. Also, many vacant heritage buildings were noticed. Considering the above mentioned, the Serbian standards for classifying hotels into categories are analyzed, to examine the difference between the procedures for conversion of heritage buildings and non-heritage buildings into hotels, in terms of application of the standards. Although the status of heritage buildings, in many cases, can be an obstacle in the process of building conversion, this paper presents the legislative benefits of converting heritage office buildings into hotels

Mapping post-socialist changes in urban tissues: a comparative study of Belgrade and Krakow

    No full text
This project on post-socialist urban form in Belgrade and Krakow was undertaken by the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology and the Institute of Architecture and Urban and Spatial Planning of Serbia, involving field visits to both cities. A brief historical review and discussion of planning contexts is followed by an analysis of urban tissues from which five cases, characteristic of both cities, were selected for analysis. These range from peripheral areas to major city-centre streets and typical modern developments. A GIS database was prepared for each case and comparisons made of land use patterns, the year-by-year establishment of new plots, Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and Building Area Ratio (BAR). Plot development is examined through the analysis of the relationship between construction year, plot size, the number of buildings on each plot, and increases of floor and building area ratio. The project highlights parallels between the impacts to which similar urban tissues in the two countries have been exposed during the post-socialist period and reveals the variety of problems and challenges of urban regulation, land ownership and housing investments in relation to post-socialist urban form
