This study aimed to seek the effects of self-repetition and comprehension check strategies on Iranian EFL learners' speaking fluency. To this end, the researcher gave the OQPT to 140 Iranian students to determine their level of English proficiency. The researcher selected 90 intermediate students and divided them non-randomly into two experimental groups; Self-Repetition group (n=30) and Comprehension Check group (n=30). Then, both groups were pretested. After that, the researcher put the participants of both groups in two Compensatory Strategies. Each experimental classroom was taught through a specific compensatory strategy. On the other hand, the control group received traditional activities in learning speaking fluency. This procedure continued till the last session. At the end of the study, a posttest was conducted. The results of one-way ANOVA revealed that both experimental groups had better performance on their post-test compared to their pre-test. The results showed that there was not a significant difference between the performances of the experimental groups on the post-test

It analyzes the notion of double colonization as portrayed through marginalization and subordination of women in the novels. It shows the relationship between the colonizer and colonized and the purpose of colonization. In addition, it examines the status of the colonized women in relation to customs, traditions, and race where customs are obviously against women in their society and women characters appear as an inferior class and have no recognized status and view in that society. The method used can be described as descriptive and analytical relying mainly on the texts of the two novels and the critical literature produced on them that sheds more light on the problem in question

The Representation(s) of Morocco in Elias Canetti’s The Voices of Marrakesh

Elias Canetti’s (2009) the Voices of Marrakesh depicts a set of cultural features about Marrakesh city, Morocco. In such travel writing text, different are the issues of representation about the country which are discursively figured in negative perspectives. Relatedly, the gaze of the Westerner theoretically and practically helps target the extent to which the Moroccan landscape and identity are constructed. At this point, debates about the nature of concepts like the ‘civilized’, the ‘primitive’, and the ‘savage’ are very common and form the intellectual background for the travel writer. The dichotomy between center and periphery is highly examined in the present article since there are images or processes of decentralizing Morocco. Following post-colonial analytical approach, the current article problematizes the way the West represents Morocco and its cultural geography. Importantly, the article focuses on Moroccan geography which is given little if not no importance pretending that it is a deserted space where the uncivilized natives dwell. It serves nothing but fear and mystery. This paper serves as a basis for the readership to understand the way Morocco is portrayed by Canetti. By representing Morocco in different images, Canetti ideologically generates a socio-cultural discourse about Arabs and about Morocco in particular. By doing so, he confirms the fact that there is no innocent text including travel narrative

    No full text
Finding practical methods leading to a promising and autonomous learning is one of the significant objectives of research in the field of Foreign Language Teaching. Along with these attempts, this study tries to meet challenges by creating an alteration in the cloze procedure application. We aimed to study the effectiveness of employing a cloze procedure before teaching reading skills on Iranian engineering students’ Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Applying quasi-experimental, pre-test, posttest, and delayed posttest design, the participants were selected using intact classes and randomly divided into the experimental and control groups. The participants were 380 B.S. Iranian first-year engineering students whose English proficiency levels were determined by using the Oxford Quick Placement Test. Except for using the cloze procedure in the experimental group (N=190), everything was similar between groups during the instruction. In addition to pre-test, posttest, and delayed posttest, the experimental group received a questionnaire to reflect on the efficacy of using the cloze procedure. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS. The results showed that employing instructional cloze texts before teaching reading skills was significantly effective in terms of creating participants’ ZPD and broadening their learning. These findings from the tests were consistent with the results obtained from questionnaires. The implication of the present study is that considering the learners’ developmental level, instructors can manipulate traditional methods and use the materials innovatively to facilitate learning. Also, training learners to set goals, plan their learning, and monitor their progress during the learning process should be given surplus attention.
