A Thematic Study of Repetition in Taha Hussein’s The Call of the Curlew

    Get PDF
This analytical study examines Taha Hussein’s The Call of the Curlew uses of repetitions as a stylistic feature which represents specific functions intended by the original author according to Nida's dynamic equivalence and compared to their equivalents in TT. The loss of meaning that comes out from deletion; the intended function by the original author; and the loss of theme and rheme that happens while deleting the repetition are the core of this study. The study includes content analysis of ten random selected examples from the novel and was based on Munday (2008 & 2010); Dickins et al (2002); Venuti (2013); Johnstone (1991); Hermans (2009); Chesterman (1997) and Bassnett (1980). The Study concludes that the translator tries to delete such a repetition to follow naturalness. Naturalness is not the appropriate strategy of translating repetition where it used as a stylistic feature by the original author. Loss of meaning and loss of theme-rheme order occur too

Loneliness in S. T. Coleridge's Trio1 and "Dejection: An Ode"

    No full text
The aim of this study is to explore the paradox of loneliness in company with nature in Coleridge's Trio and "Dejection: An Ode." Loneliness plays the role of vital connector between nature and the poet or between nature and the characters within the poems under study. This loneliness leads to a communion between the poet and nature, and, consequently, the poet is able to create and be illuminated by a better understanding of himself and others. However, loneliness could not always bring the poet and nature into communion, and so there is sometimes a failure in connection. This success and failure reflect the fluctuations in the poet's life as a creator. This communion represents the organic relationship between the romantic poet and nature, which is a vital part of his survival as a poet. Nature is a container for the romantic poet, but a relationship with it cannot be established without loneliness

An Overview of Norms, Policies and Audience Perception in Audiovisual Translation with Reference to the Arab World

    No full text
This paper addresses the three concepts of Audiovisual Translation: norms, policies and audience perception that are related to the three pillars of the industry at large: producers, stake holders and consumers consecutively with a focus on the situation in the Arab world, but in a global context. It relies in its investigation on previous research and works executed mainly in dubbing and subtitling. Findings reached from the study in this context show that a substantial effort has been exerted in the area with regard to screen translating from English into Arabic, though much less vice versa, but a lot of work still has to be done. With regard to norms, apart from the global agreed norms, there is inconsistency between producers’ companies, agencies and so on. Moreover, policies seem to be governed by ideologies rather than by norms. In terms of Audience perception, little has been done and more research using advanced techniques has to be carried out

Newmark’s Translation Procedures Dealing with Additional Information in the English Target Novels

    No full text
Newmark’s translation procedures are provided to accommodate cases that cannot be managed by literal translation and out of 18 procedures, four of them; Descriptive Equivalent, Expansion, Paraphrase, and Notes, Additions, Glosses deal with additional information. The four procedures are found in the Indonesian novels translated into English. Using these Newmark’s four translation procedures, this research paper is to identify the existence of the four procedures in the target texts; how they appear in the target language text, in what linguistic forms and for what function. The novels as the data source are randomly selected and the data chosen are studied by comparing the length of words involved in the target text and in the source text. The results show that not all four procedures can be found in each target text; the linguistic forms of each procedure may sometimes be similar but the functions are uniquely characterized

The Tragic Hero of the Modern Period: A Comparative Study of the African and the European Concepts

    No full text
It is very clear that there is a foundation for cultural dimensions in modern tragedy. This is because the tragic hero differs from culture to culture in the modern society. As a result of this, it is crucial to point out that whereas the modern tragic hero in the Western culture is an anti-hero, in cultures such as, Asia and Africa, the tragic hero holds unto some traits of the Greek heroic figure. This paper, therefore, fulfills an identified need to study these two tragic traditions by juxtaposing the appendages of the traits of the Greek classical tragic hero in the African concept alongside with the unique personal characteristics of the European concept to present a new hero, whose personal lack of order does not present a deviation from the system, but confirms a dislocation in the system itself (Adade-Yeboah & Owusu, 2013a). The study provides extracts from the works of Beckett’s, Miller, Achebe and Rotmi as supporting texts to present the two tragic traditions in the two modern periods

Furthermore, with the aim of increasing knowledge on police lexicon in international level, there were used also two world police encyclopedias (Kurian: 2007; Greene: 2007), which were useful to have deeper insight into global level of police lexicon. In regards to the theoretical aspect, I have used local and international literature in the field of lexicology in general. For identification of police lexicon in Albanian language I have used the methodology of selection of such lexicon from existing dictionaries of Albanian language, with special focus on “Dictionary of Synonyms in Albanian Language” 2005) and “Dictionary of Albanian Language” (2006), but there were used also other dictionaries from the field of criminalistics, Justice, etc. Besides elaboration of manner of word formation through grammatical forms, there will be explained also denomination of police terminology in Albanian language based on: ranks, positions, police functions, etc. In order to give an overall overview of manner of word formation of police lexicon in Albanian language, we will provide some examples of police lexicon according to alphabetic order in Albanian language, through prefixation, suffixation and composition

Sports are of interest even to those who have traditionally tended to be just a casual spectator. Sport becomes a necessary part of our lifestyle under the impact of mass culture and clothing. Sport words go far beyond definitions of theoretical or technical expertise relevant only to a given industry. They are gradually connected with the idea of "healthy lifestyle" in the context of modern knowledge about an individual. Possession of sporting language and jargon is one of the prerequisites of improving a native speaker's communication skills. The object of this article seems important to us in this regard. The purpose of the research is to examine the composition and definition of the sport-related terminology, words, phraseological units that function in modern linguistics. In the research, analysis techniques, definition, generalization, systematization, and numerical approach have been used. We identified: sport words, word blends, terminology from various fields of knowledge (used as sports), neologisms, professionalisms and formal vocabulary, tracking articles and metaphors in the course of studying journalistic texts on sport topics. Terms are the foundation of sport terminology. The following forms of terminology are differentiated in the work: general sports (competition)-2 units, simple (position)-3 units, highly specialized (springboard, gates)-6 units. Another outcome of our analysis of sports terminology was the grouping of chosen units in keeping with the source language. Classification is the division of selected units into groups according to the language from which the word is borrowed. There are eight such groups in our work. Based on our research, we found that in the texts from newspapers and internet sources of sports subjects borrowings from the English language (time) prevail - 65 units, less often there are units borrowed from Japanese (tatami) - 8 units, French (car, springboard) - 9 units and German languages (puck, tournament) - 5 units. Smaller borrowing groups are represented by units that call sports, sports techniques, names of actions, equipment, maintenance personnel, etc., who came to Uzbek from Korean (Taekwondo) - 1 unit, Chinese (Wushu) - 2 units, Spanish (Sambo) - 1 unit, Italian (trampoline) - 2 unit

This study investigates both language and material rites involved in the entire process of Fulɓe marriage in the study area. The problem is the gradual adaptation of the culture of the dominant environment leading to substitutions of both internal and external culture of the endangered marriage traditions in favour of the dominant culture. Two sampling techniques were used in this study - Stratified and Snowball Purposive sampling techniques. Stratified sampling was used to sample six local government out of the twenty-three local governments in the state. While Snowball purposive sampling was employed to sample the participants from each of the selected local governments. The study has 120 participants as a sample size. Ethnographic research method was employed for the study. Two research questions were asked based on the objectives of the study. An open-ended Structured Questionnaire tagged Fulɓe Marriage Rituals Inventory was used to interview each of the 120 respondents individually. Descriptive data analysis was employed to answer the research questions both quantitatively and qualitatively. The study finds out that Imen giɗi bi wane hokke wance ɗum hautaɓe Kougal (we’re here to seek the hand of your daughter in marriage) emerged as the most favoured linguistic rituals in contracting Kougal Fulɓe and Chede kougal, (money for marriage) and Kolte (cloth) emerged the favoured material rites of Fulɓe marriage in the study area. In view of these findings, the study recommends that there is need for proper and much broader study to document the sociolinguistic rites involved in both endogamous and arranged marriage in Fulɓe tradition; and that money and cloth should not be restricted as the only material marriage rites in the study area considering the plight of less privileged
