    Get PDF
This study aims at finding the application of animal science terms and features of translation from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). The application and features of terms in naturalness of languages was found structured. This study used qualitative method for the analysis that is presented descriptively. Terms were taken from two books, SL written in English and TL in Indonesian. Direct interview to scientists was conducted in order to obtain information of terms and find equivalences of terms in TL. The terms found with absorption from the SL into TL, terms creation, standardization, and motivation to be scientifically understood by target readership. Features of translation were found simplified in the form of language but some of them explicated in words of TL translation, however, absorption in adaptation cannot be avoided. In addition, the uniqueness of the languages showed from the plurality of language form in SL is not always translated within reduplication in TL. It can be concluded that the translation of two different languages have their own standard of writing and understanding, especially in scientific languages

The Representation of Women in the Rajagopalachari’s Version of “Mahabharata” as the “Garwa” in the Javanese Culture Perspective

    Get PDF
Mahabharata was known and enjoyed by Javanese for centuries. It is an epic that was considered to have a big bond and has been affecting human life, the culture, mindset, and even various forms of value, including the value of the marriage system of Javanese. The marriage system from Javanese perspective placed woman as garwa (sigaraning nyawa/ soul mate) which should fulfil three criteria. The first characteristic of Javanese woman is faithful and able to dedicate themselves to serve their husbands. It is termed as "swarga nunut neraka katut". The second criterion of an ideal woman as the garwa is having an accepting/ worship attitude (narima). The ideal Javanese woman hs to be able to accompany her husband in all conditions, always grateful, sincered and satisfied even though life that is lived is not easy at all. The third is devoted. The devotion to the husband can be shown through attitude, speech and sincerity in serving the husband. In addition, an ideal woman must be able to maintain the honor of herself and her husband, keep herself away from all forms of infidelity or things that may bring disgrace to the family. These criteria also be found in Mahabharata

The Retranslation of non-Literary Texts: a Review Study

    Get PDF
This article aims at reviewing three major studies in the Translation Studies on the retranslation of non-literary texts, an unexplored field of research. These major contributions were conducted by Susam-Sarajeva (2003), Flotow (2009) and Song (2012). It is argued in this study that the field of Translation Studies can benefit much from the perspective suggested by these researchers. The retranslations of non-literary texts are better seen when located within the socio-cultural and historical conditions that have shaped their re-production in the translating language and culture. In other words, the retranslation of such texts is better explained by specific contexts and conditions in the target language than by the source texts or the poor quality of ‘first translations’

    Get PDF
The main purpose of the study is to see whether the conceptual metaphor LOVE IS A JOURNEY exists in the Bengali language or not. To conduct the research, Lakoff & Johnson’s thirteen metaphorical linguistic expressions of the conceptual metaphor LOVE IS A JOURNEY, from Metaphors We Live By (2003), were translated into Bengali equivalents and a questioner set was prepared and distributed among 386 participants. After analysis, it was found that the literal usage was 52%, 41% were found to be unspecified and metaphorical instances were only 7% of the total data. The source domain Journey has different target domains which are life, love, married life, purposeful activities, friendship and education in all metaphorical instances. The most common conceptual metaphor was LOVE IS A JOURNEY, occupying 79% and the least used conceptual metaphor was LONG-TERM PURPOSEFUL ACTIVITIES ARE JOURNEYS which made up only 0.30% among all metaphorical tokens. In both languages, it was also found that eight metaphorical linguistic expressions have similarities whereas the other five expressions have dissimilarities that basically arise due to cultural and technological differences for the conceptual metaphor LOVE IS A JOURNEY

The Arabic Literary Theorists Vis-Avis Al-Sariqah Al-Shiʻriyyah (Plagiarism) In The Medieval Period : Ḍiyāʼ Al-Dīn Ibn Al-Athīr (D. 637AH) As A Locus Classicus

    Get PDF
This disquisition revolves around the hypothesis of a literary cognoscente Ḍiyāʼ al-Dīn ibn al-Athīr (d. 637AH) on the concept of al-sariqah al-shiʻriyyah (plagiarism), which was one of the burning literary issues among the literati during the third century of Hijrah, in his chef- dʼouvre themed al-Mathal alSāʼir fī Adab al-Kātib wa al-Shā'ir. Though a coterie of connoisseurs in the field of literary praxis before ibn al-Athīr, for example, ibn Ṭabāṭabā (d.322 AH) in his 'Iyār al-shiʼr ; al-Askarī (d. 395AH) in his Kitāb al-Ṣinā'atayn : alKitābah wa al-Shi'r and ibn Rashīq al-Qayrawānī (d. 456 AH) in his al-ʼUmdah had delved into the signification and classification of al-sariqah al-shi'riyyah, albeit in a less tenuous manner. Underscoring ibn al-Athīr as a trailblazer in his exceptionally unique and unprecedented venture into the classification of alsariqah al-shi'riyyah, Abd al-Latīf Sayyid al-Harīrī avers "We have seen that Ḍiyāʼ al-Dīn ibn al-Athīr has treated the topic in an appropriate manner. He made the classification after he had reminisced, regurgitated and digested the patrimonies of his predecessors. Due to this, we rely mostly on his classification and terminologies; we used them as a torch in our way…". The only logically intuitive inference from this proclamation by al-Harīrī is the reinforcement of the rarity and infrequency of this literary endeavor by ibn alAthīr. In the light of the foregoing this modest paper is set to give an in depth analytical exposition of this unusual classification by ibn al-Athīr in a welldefined and distinctly translucent manner

The Effect of Linguistic Landscape on Palestinians Language Attitudes towards Hebrew in the West Bank

    Get PDF
This paper reports on an investigation of Palestinians' language attitudes towards Hebrew in the West Bank and the effect that linguistic landscape has on these attitudes. Questionnaires were handed to 121 participants. They were divided into two groups: a control group consisting of 65 young Palestinians living in A Area where Hebrew is absent from the linguistic landscape, and an experimental group consisting of 56 young Palestinians living in Huwwara, a Palestinian village classified as B/C Area where Hebrew is present in the linguistic landscape. It was found that Palestinians living in A Area have negative attitudes towards Hebrew in general as they associate it with the Israeli occupation. On the other hand, residents of Huwwara reported neutral feelings towards Hebrew suggesting that they have developed a sense of tolerance towards it due to its presence on road and shop signs without necessarily knowing the language

The Sociolinguistic Impacts of Language Contact on Nigerian Pidgin Usage

    Get PDF
The global spread of the English language is one of the linguistic phenomena that has brought about linguistic concepts like language code, language contact, language expansion, language change and language variation. These changes further created an avenue that gave rise to such designations as world English, New Englishes, American English, Indian English, Nigeria English and many others. We also have varieties such as the Nigerian Pidgin which is prominent in almost all spheres of human interaction especially among students within Nigeria. This paper therefore explores meaning and development of Nigerian Pidgin and the impact of language contact on the Nigerian Pidgin variety, based on sociolinguistic principles. The paper concludes by advocating for the need to elevate the Nigerian pidgin to the height it has attained based on its usability, expansion and simplicity in the communication trends of the Nigerian University students and the society. This paper asserts that pidgin should be seen as a new language that fills the gap created by standard English usage in communication

2019 Indonesia Presidential-Vice Presidential Debate in Corpus Linguistics Perspective

    Get PDF
The present paper carries out a corpus linguistic analysis of the first debate of 2019 Indonesia presidential election. The study compared the speech of presidential candidate pair number 1, JW and MA, and number 2, PS and SSU, in the debate in terms of lexical diversity and linguistic features. The research employs a mixed-method research design by using two corpus technical analyses, i.e. type/token ratio and keywords. Results show that PS spoke the most, while MA spoke with the most varied vocabulary. The study also found that foreign words from Arabic in the keywords of JW, PS, and SSU are generally used to show their belief as well as to embrace the Indonesian Muslim communities. However, the Arabic words used by MA tend to show his identity as a Muslim cleric, reflecting his in-depth understanding of Islam. Unlike the Arabic word usage, foreign words from English are used more for a practical reason and to emphasize arguments, particularly by JW and PS. Additionally, the study reveals that from the lexical word-class distribution, JW tends to give more focused information and entities, while PS tends to offer more explanations to present information. All things considered, the present writers argue that corpus linguistics is an essential method to investigate actual patterns of language used by politicians to interpret further. All in all, the present research is supposed to give a methodological contribution to the study discussing the relation between language and politics

Writer as Clairvoyant: A Pragmatic-onomastic Study of Soyinka’s The Road and Ibadan’s Socio-political situation in 1999-2009

    Get PDF
This study is designed to validate the claim that Wole Soyinka, the first African Nobel Laureate in Literature, is a clairvoyant. The work is based on events in The Road and socio-political situation in Ibadan (the largest metropolis in West Africa) between 1999 and 2009. Thus, the thrust of the research is to juxtapose the purposively selected character names in Soyinka’s The Road with the actual (nick) names in use in real life. The theoretical framework adopted is relevance theory. The study partly indicated that the playwright uses clipping, coinage, compounding and lexical borrowing as his naming strategies; and partly that the textual names parody certain bearers of such names in the larger society

The Conceptual Metaphors of Building and Construction in Newspaper and Research Article

    Get PDF
Cognitive linguists do not view metaphor as a decorative and marginal device but as a tool to reflect different ways of phenomena understanding and situation embodiment. This paper seeks to comparatively analyze the source domain of building and construction in three areas of economics, politics, and health studies in English newspapers and research articles within the framework of cognitive linguistics, to determine which register has the more pervasiveness of metaphors and also to find out the similarities and differences of conceptual metaphors (CMs) in two registers and their respective areas. To this end, MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure) was used to properly locate and identify metaphors in the corpus of a 1,529,106 words, which was extracted from online newspaper and research article journals between a three years period from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2018. A chi-square analysis was conducted to see whether the frequency distribution of CMs in the corpus was meaningful or not. The results indicate that research articles tended to employ more metaphorical expressions of building and construction than the newspaper because of the different physical environment. Furthermore, the CMs in politics outnumber the other fields of study. The results aim at enhancing learners and teachers’ perspective toward CMs in different registers and genres
