A Study of Google Translate Translations: An Error Analysis of Indonesian -to-English Texts

One of the tool that helps internet users to find information effectively is Google. Google currently offers a variety of applications, one of which is Google-Translate. Google-Translate is used to translate from the source language to the target language. However, the results of the translation are often inappropriate or have some errors. The error analysis always occurs in grammar and selection of inappropriate words. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find out whether there are translation errors and to find out the types of translation errors that occur in the translation results in Kompas.com news text. The data analyzed are the news text of Kompas.com in Indonesian translates into English by Google-Translate. This study used thedescriptive qualitative method. To examine the validity of this research the researchers use triangulation. From the data analyzed, there are 25 translation errors in Kompas.com news text. The dominance of translation error occurs in translation errors on the deviation of meaning where the number of translation errors is 16
Blogs as Platforms for Disseminating and Popularizing Literature

Journalism which had played a crucial role in the freedom struggle of India has become a strong force of social transformation in modern times. Today, blogs are present everywhere in and around journalism with individual journalists, corporate, celebrities and agencies. Weblog is a recent form of journalism where bloggers describe an event, express their views on daily happenings, promote a book or update articles. Blogs cover a wide range of writing from poetry to lengthy prose. There are a number of literature–oriented blogs which disseminate various genres such as poetry, fiction, reviews, criticism and language. ‘Shakespeare’ blog contains articles on Shakespeare’s works, his creative world and his plays in performance. ‘No Sweat Shakespeare’ blog tells the way that Shakespeare used mythology in his plays which brings audience closer to his imagination. Fiction blogs provide easy, accessible, informative data on established and current authors and their available books. ‘BookRiot’ blog helps the readers to take a quiz on authors’ famous works and also provides them a chance to win. Blogs like ‘The Blog Smugglers’ features a variety of different reviews dedicated to science fiction and fantasy short stories and novels. Indian English blogging is undergoing a sort of transformation in present scenario amidst its fewer audience for English language blogs. The Indian blogs include varied articles and reviews on literary works where we can find diverse voices and conversations on literature. ‘Literarism’ in its article on Indian English literature, gives the gradual evolution of English language in India from the arrival of captain William Hawkins to the flamboyance of fine Indian writers who have made considerable contributions to world literature. This blog also offers solved answers of UGC- NET questions to the aspirants. ‘Book Geeks’ is a book review blog dedicated to Indian authors. Employing TBL and 3PS Learning Approaches to Improve Writing Skill Among Saudi EFL Students in Jouf University
Get PDFLearning the writing skill is a challenging task for second or foreign language learners. This difficulty stems from the fact that students required multiple skills and knowledge while writing. They need, for example, enough vocabulary inventory, grammar knowledge, and other discourse strategies to organize the text. Students are also in need for background knowledge about the subject matter of the writing task, so they generate their ideas accordingly. To achieve all these targets and to meet the challenges, a need for an approach that meets the requirement of the written task and enhances the students’ abilities and linguistic background is a must. The aim of this research is to investigate two of the available approaches; namely, the TBL approach and the conventional 3Ps model, to improve Saudi EFL students’ writing skill in Jouf university. The focus is on finding out the effect of the two approaches, the differences between them, and what are the aspects of improvement that TBL approach can achieve. The data were collected experimentally through writing pretest and posttest after students received training using the two approaches for 6 weeks. The findings revealed that using TBL approach is significantly effective in learning writing skill. It was also found that TBL approach is more effective than the conventional model. Furthermore, findings demonstrated that employing TBL approach on teaching Saudi EFL students’ writing skills improved five writing sub-skills including organization, content, mechanism, grammar, and vocabulary with the organization and content the most improved areas

The Effect of Youtube on High School Students’ Second Language Acquisition

To achieve this aim, this research employs descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from Junior High School Students in East Barito regency. In collecting data, the researchers used observational method. Student`s utterances were observed after watching Youtube`s videos. The result of the analysis shows that Youtube`s video blogging has effect upon students in SLA. The students get new English vocabulary from various genres of videos. They also improve their English sentence structure found on the video to sentence structure with other words. Video blogging is part of informal environment English as second language acquisition given the benefit in this research so that the student can learn English from different objects, apart from school
Key Aspects in Relation to Forensic Linguistics
Get PDFThe current study explores some key aspects in connection with forensic linguistics covering its discipline. Therefore, this study sheds some light on prominent types of linguistic evidence such as forensic stylistics, forensic phonetics, forensic transcription, discourse analysis, author identification, and more focus on forensic translation. It includes areas directly related to forensic linguistics like software forensic, plagiarism detection, and document examination. Forensic applications with respect to descriptive linguistics involving forensic linguists, the linguistic investigation of authorship, and text types shall be considered as well. Principles and skills needed for forensic translation will be also provided. In conclusion, the present study proposes that judges, lawyers and legal translators and interpreters, and specialized linguists should work together to have better understanding of law issues. They should benefit from the legal oral and written texts and legal translators should provide consultancy and experience towards legal issues and cases. Further suggestions and recommendations will be presented accordingly
Challenges in Translating a Novel from English into Kinyarwanda: Focus on Mariama Ba’s So Long a Letter
Get PDFThis paper pinpoints challenges encountered in the translation of a literary work from a source language into a target language and how these challenges can be addressed. The researchers want to equip Rwandan teachers and students with the material to be used in literature lessons as most of literature in that context are written in foreign languages. The researchers throw light on the translation of Mariama Ba‘s So Long a Letter from English – originally known as a West Germanic language; into Kinyarwanda, a Bantu language. The paper is geared by the belief that some prose writings which should benefit a wider African audience are greatly affected by a number of factors including language barrier as many Africans do not have any knowledge of these foreign languages. As a rich and complex language, Kinyarwanda is often times affected by foreign languages English included. Translating a novel into Kinyarwanda from English is thus challenging as the two languages are too distant. It was found that Challenges encountered throughout the translation of the novel “So long a letter” from English into Kinyarwanda were mainly related to the translation of unknown ideas, genitive constructions known as "of phases", figures of speech such as metaphors, similes, gender markers , proper names , active and passive constructions , proverbs and proverbial phrases
Exploring Parent-Teacher Collaboration to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Skills: An Action Research
Get PDFThis action research was conducted to help students develop their vocabulary skills through parent-teacher collaboration and to help parents and teachers understand that collaboration is an important aspect that warrants enough attention. Thus, few studies have focused on parent-teacher collaboration to help students develop their vocabulary skills. This study applies Beck, McKeown, and Kucan’s (2013) three-tiered model of vocabulary to gauge the vocabulary level of the students. Moreover, the researchers used quasiexperimental research to test whether or not collaboration between teachers and parents is effective in improving the vocabulary skills of students. This study used pre-test and post-test to measure students’ vocabulary skills. A training matrix was developed by the researchers to be used for the monthlong duration of the experiment. In the matrix, the researchers employed vocabulary exercises during the experiment. The data gathered were statistically analyzed using SPSS. The results of the study are presented and discussed with reference to the aim of the study; (1) based on the computed mean of the pre- and post-tests, it was found out that there is an increase in the students’ level of performance in vocabulary. Moreover, (2) the results accepted the hypothesis that there is a significant difference before and after the exposure to parent-teacher collaboration. Lastly, (3) it is proposed that parent-teacher partnership shall be the next priority of the school Continuous Improvement Program (CIP) which will highlight communication skills primarily
