Recently, computer-based exams, in replacement for the traditional paper-based exams, have become a booming trend that is endorsed by many educational institutions and universities all over the world; this endorsement has been a direct outcome of the advancement in computer technology and the rapid spread of the internet. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the usability outlook of computer –based exams as a means of assessment and examination , and to identify some of the reflections on the experiment of Palestine Technical University- Kadoorie (PTUK)\ Tulkarm Campus in implementing such an assessment on one of the English language introductory courses , namely, Remedial English course (no.15200099). To achieve the purpose of this study, and to answer its questions, the researcher scrutinized, in a survey-like and a descriptive methodology, throughout the findings and conclusions of the available related literature in order to draw a line of understanding in regard to the main aim of this study and its questions. The findings of this study revealed that using computer-based exams in replacement for the traditional paper-based exams represents a domain of an ongoing debate between adherents and opponents who anchor their points of view to various sets of reasons and rationales. The findings also pointed out some problems and setbacks in regard to the experiment of (PTUK) in implementing computer-based exams, as means of assessment and examination , on one of the English language introductory courses, namely, Remedial English course (no.15200099); some of these problems and setbacks are mainly connected with the (LMS-Moodle), which is used as a medium of carrying out and disclosing the Remedial English Exam, and, in addition, the complete dependence on multiple-choice questions, which are the only type used by (LMSMoodle). The study concluded with some recommendation for future research. KEYWORD

Trump’s Strategies in the First Presidential Debate: A Critical Discourse Analysis

    Get PDF
The young and vibrant 243-year-old U.S. has long claimed its status as a world power. As stated by the U.S.'s Congressional Research Service (2019), the U.S. shoulders the responsibility of defending and promoting freedom, democracy, and universal values, which means that America, being an active internationalist global leader, a superpower, and a world policeman, has been maintaining the power of manipulating partially, if not most, the whole world. Whatever this country does attracts the whole world's attention. This attention gets more significance as Donald Trump aims to take center stage once more in the presidential campaign in 2020. The way Americans choose their presidents will affect the world situation in many respects. While it is noticeable that there is an anti-intellectual trend in presidential discourse (Lim, 2008), Trump's presidential linguistic style is highly distinctive in terms of its simplicity, anti-elitism, and collectivism (Oliver & Rahn, 2016). Realizing the importance of Donald Trump's linguistic presidential style, the attention that it drew, and the likelihood that Trump may reuse his approach in the 2020 presidential campaign, this study focuses on the first presidential debate’s strategies of Donald Trump in 2016. The analysis of the debate’s strategies is influenced by the work of Fairclough (1993), Halliday (1971) and Goffman (1967). The results of the study revealed that Trump combined four strategies of presidential debates, including (1) self-acclamation, (2) describing opposing candidates through the verbal attack, (3) and selfrectification or image-enhancement through the defense against opposing candidates' blaming argument, and (4) extra-vocalization. Trump's presidential speech is a source of valuable knowledge that makes use of both typical candidates' traditional strategies with a more business-oriented approach. This is the valuable foundation on which researchers can base to consider Trump's changes in linguistic style when he comes to the upcoming presidential campaigns in 2020

PWPQRPQ and ImageReel: Engaging Students into Activities Converging Poetry and Cinematography

A challenge to Filipino educators is the constant adaptation to teaching and learning styles as millennial learners become more exposed to and adept with handy electronic devices, multimedia technology and digital applications but less engaging in their school subjects especially a reading and literature class. This paper discusses simple and innovative activities which enhance the teaching and learning of basic literary concepts, like poetry, through the aid of cinematography. These are “Play, Watch, Pause, Question, Resume, Pause, Question” (PWPQRPQ) and ImageReel. This paper centers on the Poetry Class of the researcher during the first semester of 2015-2016 using modified guidelines and rubrics of photobased learning and filmmaking techniques/strategies of Katherine Kuta, Sarah Kavanagh, Katherine Schulten and Dave Bonta. In the process of these two activities, the learners were able to not only appreciate literature and film but also develop skills in deciphering, questioning, assessing and short filmmaking. Moreover, such shared activities transformed the class into an interdisciplinary and multilayered teaching and learning environment for both educator and learners. In creating this teaching and learning space, literary educators significantly address the common reading issue of learners being passive readers but active screen viewers. These activities result to learners becoming active readers, critical thinkers, constructive interpreters, creative narrators, and sensitive individuals. Future researchers, whose interest lie on the teaching of literature and film through technology can study on other aspects of the learning performances of students, such as their attitude, interest, engagement, and creativity. They also can study the effectiveness of the teaching strategies used by teachers whose materials are similarly digital-driven using quasi or experimental designs

This study aimed at measuring the size of vocabulary knowledge of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) among undergraduate Jordanian students at different Jordanian universities. For this purpose, research questions were presented and the answers to these questions were provided and discussed. The participants of this study consisted of 39 undergraduate Jordanian students. A vocabulary test was used by the researcher to investigate the vocabulary storage of undergraduate Jordanian students. The results of the study indicated that the vocabulary size of Jordanian undergraduate students is fairly high. This is particularly true with the first few thousand-word list: 2000 and 3000-word list. However, for the 5000-word list, 10000-word list, university students have a lack of vocabulary storage which normally resulted in many difficulties in English language skills

The main attention is paid to the consideration of cognitive signs of enantiosemy in English, Russian and Uzbek languages. The research is mainly done on associations of interviewees. The purpose of this article is to present and prove a new type of enantiosemy “conceptual enantiosemy” through deep research. The main methods of the research were the survey method.
