The Essence of Womanhood and the Beauty of Bengali Women as Depicted in Tagore’s Fiction
This article seeks to explore the beauty of Bengali women which is a recurring feature in Tagore’s fiction. She has been portrayed realistically and beautifully in his fiction. Tagore glorifies the beauty of Bengali women and idealized womanhood in some of his short stories as well as in his novels. Tagore portrays them as an ordinary domestic being that possess moral attitudes and have their own identity in the society. Therefore, he gave priority to women in society and played an important role as a social reformer through his literary works. Some of the women protagonists in his fiction are not only beautiful but linger longest in the memory like the character of Sucharita in the novel Gora, a young woman, in the short story Skeleton, Urmimala in Two sisters, Chandra in the short story, Punishment, Giribala in Fury Appeased, or a young widow in My Fair Neighbour. His main focus was on women emancipation, his writings aimed for women’s liberation, equality, freedom, and their rights. The central theme of his writings was the social injustice against women. He wanted women’s active participation in the society. Through his literary work Tagore encouraged and advocated gender equality and women rights
A Critical Review of The Theory of Diglossia: A Call to Action
This study outlines Ferguson’s (1959) classical diglossia and Fishman’s (1967) extended diglossia and refers to the modifications and extensions this concept has undergone since Ferguson’s (1959) original definition. The purpose is to show how Ferguson’s diglossia differs from the extensions formulated by other linguists and discuss the various critiques that the theory of diglossia has received in the years that followed. As stated by Ferguson (1959) himself, classical diglossia was intended to describe only the cases where genetically related varieties are used. Therefore, I argue that diglossia should maintain its original meaning so that a coherent theory of diglossia can be created by focusing on the implications and outcomes that such diglossic societies can have in relation to other sociolinguistic phenomena (such as identity, language attitudes, and language contact). Mixing diglossic and bilingual/multilingual cases because the language varieties involved are in functional distribution, possibly makes each phenomenon less valuable as they deserve special investigation and, a theory of their own
The Effect of Using Authentic Texts on Iranian EFL Learners' Incidental Vocabulary Learning: The Case of English Newspaper
This study intended to investigate the effect of using authentic texts on Iranian EFL learners' incidental vocabulary learning. To this end, a population of 52 Iranian female EFL learners aged 15 to 17 was selected. They were two intact classes; experimental group (25 students) and control group (27 students). Both groups received a pretest at the first session. Regarding the treatment, the authentic reading texts selected from World News for students of English, Level1 was taught to the experimental group while the texts selected from book 1 was taught to the control group. After a month post-test were run among all of the participants in both control and experimental groups to find out the possible effects of the treatment on the participants' vocabulary improvement. The analysis of data paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the post-tests of experimental and control groups. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test
The Implicature of Dialogue Discourse in “Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them” Movie Script: A Psycholinguistics Analysis Study
In the process of speech production, people start with such planning about the topic which is pronounced and turn it into verbal words or sentences that are used as the output. Meanwhile in film production, a script can be seen as it is made for those requirements in order to carry out a character. Within the process of movie production, a script has an important role as it is used to control dialogues and conversations which are the nature of a movie. As silence movies appeared in 70-80s era, here comes the revolution of the nature of movies, which is shown with such rich of visual appearances. It also has following the controlled script to see the connections between overall proper emotions due to an evidence or in a phenomenon. Here, from the way people utter their words which is written down in the script, it turns out to be their persistent character. The implicature of the dialogue discourse from this audiovisual media can be sought. Hence with it, this mini-research is conducted in order to seek it; the aim is to analyze the implicature of the functions of segments of dialogue discourse which are in form of the transcript of a movie and see the visual appearance of the scenes. From all movies, the researcher has chosen the British-American movie “Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them” as the quality of the dialogues and conversations is required. Inferences drawn from Professional Development programs held in English Language Department of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University
Teaching of English in Saudi Arabia is a necessitous concern in education. The administration, planners, syllabus designers, textbook writers, teachers, and government have been trying to advance the teaching/learning of English in the country. The teachers are capable, experienced and the infrastructural facilities including e-information processing facilities are available for the use of pedagogic requirements. However, the results are not consistently satisfactory. In this case, the researchers tend to shift their focus on the growth of English teachers. It is felt that the target teachers should diagnose the challenges of learning English, and accordingly evolve instructional strategies for better output. Professional development is perceived as a method to sustain and improve the quality of teachers. The acquired information does not only bring about improvement in the teaching process, but also leads to career development. This article discusses Inferences drawn from Professional Development programs held in English Language Department of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in concurrence with a survey of the relevant theoretical and comparative literature. The emphasis here is on the various methods of development- teachers can use to advance themselves persistently. Similarly, we have a lot of content in the framework of language teacher requirements for classroom practices. Although language teachers continually develop new theories and practices, it is not unusual for them to encounter difficulties in their professional development. These difficulties and their effects can be addressed and subsequently mitigated by school administrators and teachers in College
The Challenges for Using English for Burundians: For an Effective Integration into the East African Community
Effective communication requires social and cultural norms in addition to linguistic competence. This study explores the challenges that people who studied English in Burundi face when communicating in English. It, also, seeks to determine the causes of these challenges. To this end, people who often participate in meetings, conferences, or workshops where the working language is English were identified and given a questionnaire made of open-ended and multiple-choice questions. Results indicate that respondents do not know which elements of the language are essential for communication. They consider that the linguistic competence alone is enough for being able to communicate. For example, learners consider that being able to pronounce correctly the language and knowing the technical terms may be enough for them to communicate their ideas. It is also found out that the causes of this lack of effective communication may lie in the inadequate teaching methods adopted in Burundi
Women as Other: A Comparative Study of A Room of One’s Own and The Grass is Singing
The contention of this research is to prove the hypothesis that considering woman as other, man has enslaved her in the panoptic power of patriarchy because of the interpellations of culture and society. The reason of becoming a woman as other is the interpellation of different ideological state apparatuses which teach that man is always dominant, governing, commanding and supreme and woman is always inferior, subservient and a menial being. My research adopts a qualitative approach and it uses comparative method of research. This research will be the comparison of a prose A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf which is a shrewd, sophisticated and influential text against the intellectual subjugation of women writers and a novel The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing which is a story of an independent, self-assured and a friendly woman who became a victim of marriage and her husband who was following traditional gender roles set by society to act as powerful, dominant and oppressive to his wife. Both the texts will be explicating the concept of other, the former describing how does a woman become other in the light of Michael Foucault’s concept of panopticism and the later delineating why does a woman become other in the light of Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology
Creating Pseudo-intimacy through Vocatives in Indonesian TV Sho
Vocatives, closely related to "addressing terms", are used to create pseudointimacy between participants of speech events, not only in everyday conversation, but also in media interactions, such as talk show. This paper presents a corpus-based analysis on the forms and functions of Indonesian vocatives used by female and male hosts, each hosting one of two popular talk shows in Indonesia, i.e. So Imah Show (with the female host) and Just Alvin (with the male host). The analysis is based on 12,746-word corpus of one episode for each of the two talk shows. The results show that the female host predominantly uses a politer form to her guests, namely the [kinship terms + first name full form] pattern; meanwhile the male host prefers a solidarity form, namely the [first name full form] pattern. Concerning the functions of the vocatives, both hosts use their preferred vocative forms mostly to maintain pseudo-intimacy, compared to the summoning attention, and addressee identification. These findings indicate that male and female, given their roles as hosts in the context of media interaction, show formal variations in maintaining pseudo-intimacy, in which the female host tend to be politer than the male host. This bias is hypothesised to be influenced by different politeness strategies used by each host, considering the age of their guests

Narrative Journalism has become one of the most important art forms in literature through education, in which story telling plays a vital. It has been in vogue for a past few years and grabs the attention of the readers. The art of applying story telling is in building a proper narrative to support and reflect a brand’s values of the plots that turns to be a story to be delivered. Narrative journalism attracts and stays in the minds of the readers through ways like delivering the story with expression, actions etc while following the S undeviating form of the normal tradition of conveying a story. The one key to Narrative Journalism is the truth, which offers the basic question of who, what, when and where the story happens. Storytelling has become a major part of human life with real or imaginary events. It is the most powerful thing in the world; it connects the dots of our communities even though technology has taken its stand currently. This paper deals in length on how narrative journalism has carved a niche in the field of storytelling with the connection of nonfiction.
