Turn Sequences in Host-Host and Host-Caller Talk in a Malaysian Radio Phone-In
The study describes the turn sequences in host-host and host-caller talk and the nature of radio phone-in interactions in Malaysia. Based on selected episodes of phone-in interactions from a radio phone-in programme, this study explores the sequential organization of interactions between host-host and host-caller in the development of talk based on topics of discussion. Topics on common issues that generally feed the Malaysian public, such as, on social, relationship, moral and ethical issues are pre-selected for discussion with the hosts and radio callers. Since the radio station is broadcast in English, participants to the radio phone-in interact in English as a second language. The study adopts both Conversation Analysis and Membership Categorization Analysis in analysing turn-design and turn-management in the development of interactions between host-host and host-caller. The paper also illustrates how host and caller orientate to certain membership categories or category work in the sequential unfolding of talk. Findings show that the introductory stage of host-host talk is significant in establishing opinions from the radio hosts, as well as provides a resource for topical content in the development of talk. Both hosts are seen to work collaboratively, in which each conversational turn builds on prior talk, which ultimately develops a scenario for the setting of the topic for discussion. Participants also make reasoned and moral judgements about behaviour based upon the available membership categories in the content of talk
A Critical Discourse Analysis of Benjamin Netanyahu's Speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014
In this research, the researcher investigates the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 29, 2014. The main purpose behind this research is analyzing the language used in Netanyahu's speech. The researcher highlights how ideology influenced Netanyahu's speech using qualitative research and by applying critical discourse analysis. CDA's purpose was to expose how language use in the analyzed speech manipulated power and ideology. The main method of CDA used in the analysis was Discourse Historical Approach, argumentation strategies and the role of social factors. The researcher adopted DHA by Wodak (2009) with focusing on the taxonomy of social actor representation by Van Leeuwen (2008). Two Wheels of Fortune Within the Plots of King Lear
William Shakespeare is one of the prominent and leading authors who have been beyond the times and inspired the following authors with their Works. His Works, the plays in particular, not only demonstrate the historical and cultural characteristics of the period but also opens some doors for the societies of every century. That is because he focuses on the universal themes, matters and problems which have been and are still the issues discussed on. The play King Lear, for example, is so significant that it contains the problem seen in any family all around the world. The main idea of the play is the father (King Lear) experiences tragic events due to that he believes the lies of two of his daughters (Regan and Goneril), distrusts the frankness and honesty of his third daughter (Cordelia); and portions his heritage out among them unrighteously. Indeed, as a tragic character King Lear commits a tragic flaw and gets punished. The plot of the play is fundamentally constructed on the process of this punishment. On the other hand, there is another story about a father (Earl of Gloucester) and his mistake. In the study the stories of the father King Lear and Earl of Gloucester are discussed and analyzed within the scope of the wheels of fortune. Finally, the aim of the study is to compare and contrast King Lear’s story as the main plot and the Earl of Gloucester’s story as a sub-plot so as to find out the differences between the tragic hero and a pathetic man
Humour and Satire in the Plays Endgame by Samuel Beckett, No Exit by J. P. Sartre and The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter
Authors do not say what they want to say, but hide it behind the lines. They want the readers to find out what they express within the implications. Thanks to this, they use some litearary devices on writing their Works in which they imply their messages. Some of the literary devices are images, symbols, metaphors, allusions and etc. These devices help the authors bring a mysterious significance in their Works. Besides these humour and satire are made by means of these literary devices and the authors give or hint their criticisims by means of them. Humour and satire are used within the similar roles of those literary devices as well. Sometimes humour is concealed behind the satire; sometimes satire behind the humour. In some cases humour becomes the aim while satire is means and vice versa. The study is fundamentally based on the question “How do the authors use humour and satire with the help of the literary devices in their Works?” The plays Endgame (by Samuel Beckett), No Exit (by J. P. Sartre) and The Birthday Party (by Harold Pinter) are discussed and examined within the context of humour and satire. The conclusions reached by consistent deductions are emphasized in the study and comments are made. Finally, in this study, it is aimed to open a new door into various seminal questions and discussions about the propability of the novel useages of humour and satire in the literary texts
Grammatical Constraints of Translating the Qur’anic Questions
This article discusses the fundamental grammatical constraints of translating some Qur’anic questions into English. The grammatical constraints are related to syntax, morphology, and sentence structure. The researcher provides an exemplified survey of these grammatical constraints. The findings of the study revealed that the translator should not neglect the grammatical aspects and should care about the sentence structure carefully. The translators of the Holy Quran should be competent in the two languages and the two cultures to avoid any problems in the process of translation. The findings of the study also showed that the translator has to do the best to keep and comprehend the historical and cultural elements of the original text. English translation of the Qur’anic questions should be done under strict quality tests before its approval
Iraqi EFL Teachers’ Perception towards the Inclusion of Lesson Planning in In-Service Training Programs
It is often argued that a well-ordered in-service training program would augment the teachers’ capability to effectively achieve classroom activities and practices, and back the educational organization to realize its objectives and ultimately develop teaching (Mahmood, 2016). Moreover, contemporary research studies maintained that Iraqi EFL teachers have need of sustenance and aide in terms of ordering active lesson plans (Al-Tufaili, 2016; Hindi, 2012). Building an effective lesson plan is one of the essential requirements for teachers in their careers in schools. Therefore, it becomes so necessary that a training program must include items related to the content of lesson planning. This paper intends to gather Iraqi EFL teachers' opinions and views concerning items classified under lesson planning, i.e. which ones are more appealed by them, which ones they disprefer. A sample of eighty Iraqi EFL teachers teaching in secondary schools from Kirkuk Governorate have been selected to answer a questionnaire containing 15 items of lesson planning. Utilizing Likert's scale, the participants reveal that operational planning for EFL classes can motivate teachers to pay attention to specific learning and teaching goals and purposes, as a lesson plan often yields a framework for teaching EFL that enables teachers to allocate exact time for teaching activities in the class. The questionnaire also shows that planning the accurate lesson and organizing it into professional steps is an interesting matter for teachers
The Healing Power: The Case of Malome and Motjhana in Sesotho
Basotho consider themselves “Tjhabana sa kgomo" meaning people united by the cow. This means, it is a highly related nation. The family connections, most of which emanate from marriage are maintained and carried down to the subsequent generations. These bonds are highly valued and all parties have an obligation towards one another. Although everyone has a role in the maintenance of the bonds/networks, others are central in the kinship network. Using the functionalist theory, the paper explores the role of the maternal uncle ‘malome’ in the social wellbeing of his sister’s children ‘batjhana’ and the rationale behind the role culture allotted him. The finding points at malome as a healer and a performer of some social rituals meant to save the lives of his batjhana. It is hypothesized that this follows the patriarchal nature of the Basotho nation. As a successor and constant member of the family malome is entrusted to be a primary linker in most kinship relationships
The Effect of Immediate and Delayed Error Correction on Accuracy Development of Intermediate EFL Learners’ Writing
This study investigated the immediate and delayed effects of error correction on the accuracy improvement of intermediate EFL learners’ writing. Through TOEFL test, the researcher selected 3 intact intermediate classes and assigned them into peer correction, self-correction and teacher correction groups. Before the main treatment, all participants were requested to write a composition on a topic, which served the purpose of pre-test. After writing the composition, the first group (peer), including two learners in each group, corrected the errors underlined by the teacher together. The learners in the second group, namely, self-correction, corrected the errors underlined by teacher individually and the third group received the correct forms written by the teacher on top of the errors. All the groups wrote 6 compositions on the topics during 6 sessions. The first topic served the purpose of immediate pre-test. This procedure was followed for 6 weeks and the 6th composition was regarded as immediate post-test and after a month (12th week), delayed post-test was conducted for all learners. The findings of ANOVA indicated that both peer correction and selfcorrection were influential in enhancing learners' writing accuracy; however, the group doing peer correction outperformed the self-correction one
Religious Translation: The Role of Translation in Defining the Concept of Peace in Islam
The research aims at defining the concept of peace in Islam. It elaborates the importance of religious translation in spreading the concept of peace in order to transfer Islamic rules and laws of conducting peace in Islam for Muslims and all humankind. This study traces how Islam adopts peace in the main sources of Islamic religion (i.e) Quran and Hadith. The results of the paper indicated that translation in public and religious translation in specific is a means for building the bridges of peace, cooperation and understanding of cultural and religious diversity among people. Peace is a principle that has deeply rooted in Islam. The results of this study also show that the core of Islamic teachings proves that Islam is a practical source for nonviolence, societal peace and peace building. By embracing the theory of peace in Islam, the world will be gifting away from conflict. Islam is a religion of peace and it aims to create social peace and security to all people. Islam, in every means of word is the religion of inspiration for peace building and progress of the nation. According to Islam, peace is the way for aspirations of people and prosperity for countries. The method used in this paper is descriptive method and content analysis of some verses from Quran and Hadith which promote and call for peace
Linguistic Validation of Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) Questionnaire in Bengali Language
The objective of the study was to conduct a linguistic validation of the Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire for Bengali language to capture the concepts of the original English-language version of the questionnaire and to examine if it is readily understood by the women with urinary incontinence. This study adopted cross sectional pilot study design between the October, 2019 to February, 2020 at Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Bangladesh. This study recruited twenty (20) native-Bengali speaking residence of Bangladesh who reported urinary incontinence. The respondents were selected purposively for this study. The mean age of the respondents was 43.95; sd±11.23. The Bengali-ISI questionnaire is conceptual and culturally adaptive to answer the two consequent items of the questionnaire. The results of the study suggested that the Bengali-ISI questionnaire captured the concepts of the original English version of the questionnaire. The Bengali-ISI was apparently understandable and recognized as an integral data collection material to measure the severity of the urinary incontinence among the Bangladeshi community women. However, further study would conduct to determine the psychometric properties of the Bengali-ISI questionnaire to measure the severity of urinary incontinence in the context of Bangladesh
