Emergency in Protest: Young People’s Politics in the Gezi Protests
No full textProtests often indicate social states of emergency. The Gezi protests, in which people from various social, political, and class backgrounds went to the streets to voice their dissent, reflected a state of emergency in Turkey. Young people, often referred to as members of the country’s post-1980 apolitical generation within public discourse, unexpectedly gathered on the streets and acted as the frontrunners of this mass movement. Their way of protesting through creative performances and humor effectively increased their visibility. Drawing upon the concept of emergency, and guided by a cultural performative approach, this article focuses on young people’s experiences of protest. It is a study of the reasons and meanings behind young people’s participation in the protests, as well as of values such as trust, solidarity, and collectivity upon which their action was grounded. My findings are based on qualitative field research, i. e., in-depth interviews conducted with young participants of the Gezi protests in İstanbul. The investigation is driven by the questions of how young people describe the notion of the political in relation to trust, solidarity, and collectivity, and how these diverse ways of describing the political through practices foreshadow a new understanding of the political

Zehn Beiträge aus Kulturanthropologie, Kunst-, und Kulturwissenschaften, Geschichts-, Islamwissenschaft, Informatik, Geografie und Volkskunde bieten umfassende Analysen von Schnittstellenformen und ihren Funktionen. The project succeeds in applying interface from different perspectives as a generic term without making of it an inflationary metaphor

No full textDie Wirkmächtigkeit traumatischer Erfahrungen auf das Leben von Kindersoldat_innen zeigt sich in Dima Zitos Monographie Überlebensgeschichten. Kindersoldatinnen und –soldaten als Flüchtlinge in Deutschland durch die vielfachen Zitate der traumatisierten Interview-Partner_innen. Die Rahmung der traumatischen Erlebnisse durch wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und dessen Ordnung durch das Konzept der sequentiellen Traumatisierung nach Keilson trägt zum Verständnis des Phänomens bei. Die Studie kann damit als ein Versuch gesehen werden, dem übermächtigen Thema des Kriegstraumas durch Strukturierung Herr zu werden. Zudem gelingt im breiten Panorama eine gute Einführung in das komplexe Themenfeld.Dima Zito’s monograph Überlebensgeschichten. Kindersoldatinnen und –soldaten als Flüchtlinge in Deutschland demonstrates the significance of the traumatic experiences of child soldiers through excerpts and quotes from the traumatized interviewees. The traumatic experiences are framed by topical elaborations and the concept of sequential traumatization by Keilson. While this study can be seen as an attempt to structure the wide range of topics around the war traumata of children, it also provides, with its broad approach, a good introduction to this complex field of research
Reading to Be Free: Rewriting the Story that Oppression Tells Every Day

Moya inwiefern jene Kritik imstande ist, zum Wissen um die “world-making social fictions” von Rasse, Ethnizität, Geschlecht und Sexualität beizutragen (S. 1). Tief eingeschrieben im gesellschaftlichen Bewusstsein und der kulturellen Vorstellungskraft, wird das Selbst zu einer Geschichte, die man täglich erzählt und die einem täglich erzählt wird. Regelmäßige, gnadenlose Selbstreflexionen, oder close readings des Selbst sind entscheidend, um unterdrückenden Lesearten zu widerstehen und persönliche wie soziale Veränderung zu erreichen. Literatur schließlich verfügt über jene Mittel, die fiktionalen, erzählerischen Mechanismen der Unterdrückung auf den Ebenen des Selbst und des Anderen zu untersuchen und zu zerlegen. Da multikulturelle Literatur Lesern Zugang zu den Sichtweisen und Ansichten marginalisierter Individuellen bietet, ist sie zugleich “one of the key sites in which the social order can be imaginatively examined and reshaped” (S. 40).Through a “socioformal” approach applying social and cultural psychology to literary criticism, Paula M. L. Moya argues for the discipline’s potential to contribute to the study of the “world-making social fictions” of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality (p. 1). Deeply written into the consciousness and cultural imaginary, the self is the story we are told, and tell, every day. Regular, brutal self-examinations, or close readings of the self, are instrumental in resisting oppressive external readings and achieving personal as well as social transformation. And literature possesses the tools to survey and deconstruct the fictional mechanics of oppression at the levels of self-concept and the concept of the other. Since multicultural literature provides readers access to subordinated individuals’ schemas, literature “is one of the key sites in which the social order can be imaginatively examined and reshaped” (p. 40)
