Globalism before Globalization
Full text linkIn diesem Band versammelt Classen 19 Fallstudien über wirtschaftliche, politische und technologische Verflechtungen im Mittelalter und in der frühen Neuzeit. Damit trägt er zum ‚global turn‘ der Geschichtswissenschaft bei: Er stellt nicht nur die zeitgenössische Annahme in Frage, dass der Globalismus sehr jung ist, sondern auch die eingefahrene Sichtweise des Eurozentrismus früherer Zeiten, was den Aufsätzen dringende Aktualität verleiht. Darüber hinaus ist das Buch, das sowohl von Nachwuchsforscher_innen als auch von etablierten Wissenschaftler_innen verfasst wurde, ein hervorragendes Beispiel für globale, interdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Forschung.In this volume, Classen brings together 19 case studies of economic, political, technological interconnectedness during the Middle Ages and Early Modernity. Full text linkNadine Sinno’s A War of Colors, a study of street art and graffiti in postwar Beirut, is the first of its kind. Drawing on Bakhtinian concepts and theories of embodiment to complement her field work in Beirut, Sinno situates her work within the existing scholarship on visual culture in the Arab world. The book focuses on how the streets of Beirut are a space for protest, the reclaming of space, and a dialogical conversation with the city and its components. The book succeeds in many of its endeavors, but falls short in its simplistic representation of the complex socio-political landscape of post-war Beirut.Nadine Sinnos A War of Colors, eine Studie über Straßenkunst und Graffiti im Beirut der Nachkriegszeit, ist die erste ihrer Art. Sinno stützt sich auf Bachtins Konzepte und Theorien der Verkörperung, um ihre Feldforschung in Beirut zu ergänzen, und ordnet ihre Arbeit in die bestehende Forschung zur visuellen Kultur in der arabischen Welt ein. Full text linkIn his recent volume, sociologist Bryan Turner attempts to formulate a theory of catastrophe based on observations regarding historical events. Beginning with a quote from Walter Benjamin, Turner’s book covers concepts like Ulrich Beck’s “risk society” and Zygmunt Bauman’s “liquid modernity,” in addition to occurrences like the Enlightenment, the Black Plague, colonialism, war, and utopian thought. Ambitious from the outset, the volume contains shortcomings and contributes little to the catastrophe discourse; indeed, a theory of catastrophe never arrives. In seinem kürzlich erschienenen Buch unternimmt der Soziologe Bryan Turner den Versuch, eine Theorie der Katastrophe zu formulieren, die auf Beobachtungen historischer Ereignisse beruht.
