The Show Must Go On? – Governing Coming Catastrophes Through Resilience
In Das Sicherheitsdispositiv der Resilienz: Katastrophische Risiken und die Biopolitik vitaler Systeme, Andreas Folkers examines three fields of contemporary security-practices: German disaster control after 9/11, the protection of vital systems and critical infrastructures, and operative continuity-management. In how far, Folkers asks, does resilience function as a technology of rule and normative model for past and present security-practices. In identifying and exposing resilience as a security-dispositif, Folkers offers an insightful diagnosis of contemporary societies, the scope of which goes well beyond Germany and speaks to current debates in the field of critical security studies
The Aristotelian Poetics under the Microscope of Theater Theory
Aristoteles oder der Vampir des westlichen Theaters, written by Florence Dupont, is a deconstruction of the Aristotelian Poetics. By analyzing examples from the broad reception history of the Poetics in theater theory, the author points out how it has wielded influence over more than five hundred years of theater history. She states that theater theory that refers to the Poetics has literalized and hence detheatricalized European theater. Aristotle invents a decontextualized theater which is mainly connected to a text-based approach. In doing so, he neglects the dimension of the Dionysiac ritual. His focus is directed towards the completion of mýthos through the structuring of mímēsis. Florence Dupont shows how this thinking has influenced theorists throughout the whole modern history of theater theory, including Brecht (who considers his own theory to be anti-Aristotelian). However, by also describing examples of non-Aristotelian theater, like the antique comedy of Plautus, which cannot be realized without the ongoing dialogue between actors/actresses and the audience, Dupont demonstrates that there is hope for a theater outside of the Aristotelian canon
An Artistic Practice: Applied Social Arts of Żmijewski
To what extend could art be used as a means to politically intervene in the world? Is it possible to consider the effects of art on society as an autonomous art production, instead of discussing its strange and pseudo effect? This anthology Kunst als Alibi comprises Żmijewski’s essays, conversations, and visual conversations, which not only address these questions, but also scrutinize his idea of a practice of ‘Angewandte Gesellschaftskunst’ and its consequences. Edited by Sandra Frimmel, Fabienne Liptay, Dorota Sajewska, and Sylvia Sasse, the authors present various texts that go beyond Żmijewski’s artistic manifesto, his analysis of his own practice, and the analysis of “Kulturinstitutionskultur” (p. 145)
Material Culture Research: The Object as Neglected Source in the Historiographical Discourse
The anthology Objekte als Quellen der historischen Kulturwissenschaften: Stand und Perspektiven der Forschung, edited by Annette C. Cremer and Martin Mulsow gives an overview of research that uses the material turn as methodology in early modern history. The different ways of medial recognition of the object in the creation of knowledge are shown in cross-epochal examples. This interdisciplinary publication serves well as an introduction to the material turn, as well as a suggestion to further discuss its potential in the discipline of History in Germany
Whiteness Made in Germany
The book’s all-encompassing (and title) question, how Germans came to be white, is far from being a mere provocation. Quite the contrary, it delves into the historical process of conceiving of Germans as white, from the period that precedes German national self-consciousness to the present moment. Reflecting on racism’s trajectories via the changing role of skin color in scientific and popular discourses and representations allows Wulf D. Hund to deconstruct German whiteness in relatively few pages. The author strives to underscore the importance of visual codes for white supremacist oppression in analyses ranging from classical European art and colonial-era iconography to film and commodity culture
Framing the Balkans: Everyday Life Beyond Stereotypes
The continuous conceptualization of the Balkans as the Other next door to Europe and the persisting tensions in the identities of the peoples inhabiting the area are recurring themes that mark the academic work about this region. Everyday life in the Balkans, edited by David W. Montgomery, a contribution to a subfield that has been neglected for many decades, offers a wide range of topics and views that shed light into how the average Balkan person deals with art, culture, politics, religion, history, livelihood, shifting identities, and neighborly relations in daily life. Covering all the countries of the region, the authors offer insights into what changes the area has undergone in the last decades, including post-socialist and post-war periods, but also keeping an eye on how the past events connect with the modern dynamics of everyday life in the peninsula
Programming a Public Mediascape: Distribution and the Japanese Motion Pictures Experience
This essay sheds light on how a film distribution apparatus, which aimed to cater to the entire population as one, in effect ushered in a process of collectivization of cultural life experience, as well as media aesthetics, in postwar Japan. While public discourses on nationhood were discouraged in postwar Japan, information and other textual contents about nationhood flowed freely. The national space as a unified location started to re-reform in the mid-1950s. This was after the country regained its sovereignty, and a new medium―television―emerged in the public sphere. However, more than these two factors, I argue that it was the film studio distribution apparatus labeled the “program picture,” which enabled an imaginary reunification of viewership throughout the country. Although not entirely unique to the postwar era, this distribution system was predicated on economic models of vertical integration, which in the midst of several medial transformations, established a dominant cinematic aesthetics that has been equally disseminated throughout the country
