Transcultural Urban Re-Imaginings: Ephemeral and Participatory Art Interventions in the Macrolotto Zero Neighborhood
The city of Prato is arguably one of the most widely studied multicultural urban contexts in Italy. Yet, in the analysis of the dynamics that enable this conceptualization of the city as a space of cultural complexity little attention has been paid to the way in which localized processes of transculturation have changed both the visual landscape of Prato, and how it is imagined and understood by the different people that call it home. This paper focuses on Macrolotto Zero, one of the city’s most multicultural neighborhoods particularly marked by decades of Chinese diasporic movements. It explores how processes of exchange/conflict between local and migrant residents, artistic collectives, activists and policy-makers have profoundly changed the way in which the neighborhood is imagined and conceptualized at a local, national and transnational level. Drawing from fieldwork, interviews with local artists and historical research on the neighborhood’s visual and aural changes, this paper argues that this historical industrial area of Prato has been undergoing an extensive process of re-imagining. This process has been driven by bottom-up participatory art interventions and by residents which have repositioned the neighborhood as a creative and innovative space of experimentation that testifies to intricate cross-cultural entanglements
Transtopian Moves: The Rhizome in Jonas Carpignano’s Feature Films Mediterranea (2015) and A Ciambra (2017)
Film comes to its fore as a cultural product, which frames social experiences, relations, and is constructed through these itself. Dealing with our current global and fluid society the analysis will focus on constructions of marginalized individuals who challenge the viewers with their modulations and variations of identifications. Being (someone) evades the subject of becoming, which as an empty subject makes the potential of alternatives transparent and invites us to pursue lived connections, and not only in human-to-human relationships. Following Stuart Hall (1994), this is where a transtopian space is created, which not only collects and allows common knowledge, but also gives space to something new to emerge. The movies Mediterranea and A Ciambra by Jonas Carpignano show us a current picture of marginalized people as well as a rhizome of migration with line of flights
Caring like a State: Politicizing Love, Touch, and Precarious Lives in the Time of COVID-19
This essay builds on the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways in which love has been played out politically in relation to migration. In Canada, the pandemic rendered visible the often invisible care work traditionally performed by women, and now increasingly so by women of color and asylum seekers. Building on queer theorist Sara Ahmed’s understanding of immigration policies as a form of ‘conditional love,’ I investigate various processes of (de)politicization that occurred when love and care became politically mobilized. I use the ‘love-body-care’ constellation as working points to tease out some disciplining and transformative possibilities brought about by love. I then examine how the pandemic unexpectedly made visible the politics of touch, love, and care between state-sanctioned hierarchized bodies. I notably unpack the ‘guardian angel’ metaphor that was mobilized to speak of those doing care work, and especially those working as continuing care assistants for the elderly — overwhelmingly asylum seekers and women of color in Quebec. Running through the discussion lie lingering existential, political questions: who cares (in both the practical and emotional understandings of the term), and how do we care about each other — with what political consequences
Towards the Posthuman Here and Now: Posthumanism as a Philosophy of our Time
This new monograph by Francesca Ferrando investigates the theoretical and practical implications of onto-epistemological and ethical aspects of the Posthuman condition, supporting it with an updated philosophical frame. Adding to Braidotti’s brand of Posthumanism (i.e. mutually converged Post-humanism and Post-anthropocentrism) a third constitutive element – Post-dualism – Ferrando’s endeavors map a broad range of markers or conceptual nodes where such a paradigm shift could be employed: namely, from the diagnosis and consequent deconstruction of the humanist exclusivist thinking patterns and even certain recent trends coming from the Transhumanist camp – to the proposal of the multiverse of posthuman possibilities, already experienceable here and now
The Origins of Decline: An Inquiry into Authoritarianism and Underdevelopment in the Muslim World
In dem Werk Islam, Authoritarianism and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison möchte Ahmet T. Kuru die historischen Ursprünge dieser speziellen Ungleichheit aufdecken. The Muslim world has undergone many transformations over the passing centuries. While displaying high levels of socioeconomic development, Muslims have created a substantial intellectual legacy between the ninth and twelfth centuries. Today, however, the predicaments of Muslim-majority countries are notorious for chronic authoritarianism and underdevelopment. In Islam, Authoritarianism and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison, Ahmet T. Kuru sets out to expose the historical origins of this particular disparity. In doing so, he criticizes the latent essentialist and post-colonial theoretical approaches that respectively point to Islam and the advent of Western colonialism as the root causes of far-reaching violence, authoritarianism, and underdevelopment in the Muslim world. Alternatively, Kuru situates the origins of these pervasive elements within the persisting alliance of the ulema (orthodox Islamic scholars) and military states in the Muslim world. Eventually, Kuru argues that this alliance undermined intellectual and economic productivity in the Muslim world over centuries by marginalizing intellectual and bourgeois classes
Gift and Exchange between Disciplines
This review concerns the volume Gabe und Tausch: Zeitlichkeit, Aisthetik, Ästhetik, a book worth reading. The volume maps the interdisciplinary field of research into the relationship between gift and exchange. The focus lies on the differentiation and interrelation of those concepts with special regard to their temporality and aesthetics
In Search of a Common Political Project: Understanding Ukraine’s Post-Soviet Path
Mikhail Minakovs Buch “Development and Dystopia. Mikhail Minakov’s book Development and Dystopia: Studies in Post-Soviet Ukraine and Eastern Europe sheds new light on Ukraine’s post-soviet and most recent development by using an innovative approach, which combines philosophical reflections and data-rich empirical research. In four thematic sections, the study covers topics ranging from the historical evolvement of oligarchic groups, systemic corruption, and the role of ‘dystopian’ language in the public sphere to geopolitical imaginaries of (Anti)-Maidan protesters. Being an involved observer, the author provides timely analysis and convincingly succeeds in situating the Ukrainian case within broader philosophical and theoretical debates
Art-Philosophy. A book on Ludwig Wittgenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi
Paolozzi and Wittgenstein. The Artist and the Philosopher, published in summer 2019, is dedicated to the significance of Ludwig Wittgenstein for the work of the British Pop Art artist Eduardo Paolozzi. So far, Paolozzi\u27s intensive and fundamental examination of the work and life of the Viennese philosopher is still little present in the reflection on the relationship between philosophy and art. To change this is the firm intention of the book’s editors, Diego Mantoan and Luigi Perissinotto. And even if the quality of the contributions fluctuates, they do manage to make Paolozzi visible as a genuine artistic interpreter of Wittgenstein and his art the angle under which the philosopher, too, appears in a different light
Transplantation: Beyond Transcultural and Identity-Making Processes
The connection between the practical, physical realization of the botany-born concept of transplantation and its usage as cultural metaphor in identity-building aspects opens a range of questions regarding the problematic transferral of the concept from the scientific subject to the cultural disciplines. The interdisciplinary reconstruction of this conceptual fracture is investigated by the publication Kulturwissenschaftliche Konzepte der Transplantation (2019) edited by Ottmar Ette and Uwe Wirth, in collaboration with Carolin Haupt
