Ballet Transliteration: Cold War Exchange and Its Intricacies
Ballet in the Cold War. Ballet in the Cold War: A Soviet-American Exchange explores the issue of Cold War diplomacy through an investigation of the ballet tours of the Bolshoi Theater and the New York City Ballet in the early 1960s. Anne Searcy highlights the crossroads of dance, music, politics, and their perception. She has successfully applied the concept of ‘transliteration’ to the specific context of inter-bloc cultural exchange and investigates the topic from a new angle by incorporating unexplored sources
Countering a “Politics of the Powerful”: On the Fragility of Post/pandemic Life
Post/Pandemisches Leben. Post/Pandemisches Leben. Eine neue Theorie der Fragilität traces the connections between a fragility of life, which has become newly visible as a result of the pandemic, existing dynamics of global inequality, and the exclusionary mechanisms of (post)colonial and hetero-normative structures. With their interdisciplinary theory, the authors succeed in showing the productive potential of fragility for a reflection on a more just post/pandemic society — and oppose to this a politics of the strong
World Politics at the Turn of the 19th Century: The Universal Postal Union and the Influence of the German Empire
As part of the debates on globalization and the history of global interdependencies under the concept of ‘global governance,’ Gunnar Wendt’s Das Deutsche Reich und der Weltpostverein attempts to take an unbiased look at German foreign policy in the context of the Universal Postal Union. In reference to historical and political science methods, it represents an important contribution to research on the role of the German Empire as part of the international world economy
Negotiating Sculptures through In_Visibilities: The Case of anti-Semitic Reliefs in German Churches
In this paper, a personal exchange takes place between the authors, whose perspec- tives are informed by political philosophy and art studies. These are two disciplines heavily involved in the debate over the de_construction of monuments, statues, and sculptures. An example of such a debate is that on the anti-Semitic and so-called Ju- densau sculpture, which can still be found on the facades of many German churches. Through the lens of in_visibilities, the authors want to look at the different argu- ments made for the preservation of the sculptures or for their removal: What makes these sculptures in_visible? Why should they be made, or remain, in_visible
A Matter of Attitude: On Responsibility and Self-Critique of Design at Michael Erlhoff
Michael Erlhoff reflects on the downsides of design in Im Schatten von Design: Zur dunklen Seite von Gestaltung. He points out in which sectors design evades responsibility and does not assume self-criticism. In six chapters with a broad variety of shorter essays, design and designed services are analyzed and contextualized regarding manipulation, counterfeiting, ethics, moral, humanity, self-disassembly and honesty. The author questions the universality of formal principles such as function, ergonomics, and efficiency and exposes thereby the challenges and limits of design
Abjectivity: The Selfie Subjectivity of Trans* Social Media Influencers
The selfie has emerged as one of the most globally recognizable images and is embroiled in both popular culture and scholarly debates, without a consensus in sight. It is one of the foremost ways in which individuals decode expectations of hegemonic subjectivity and encode their identities in accordance with or subversion of those codes as determined by the many intricacies of the selfie. I argue that we approach selfies as a mediated extension of the practices and power matrices which inscribe and materialize our subjectivity, and that the ambiguity of such digital self-portraits is not a bug, but rather a crucial feature of this digital social code: it is evidence of the abject, a vital part of our subjectivity. I build my analysis on Judith Butler’s engagement with sociologist Erving Goffman and philosopher Julia Kristeva, and Ace Lehner’s seminal selfie theory. Using examples of trans-identifying Instagram influencers, I present an understanding of the selfie that allows individuals to powerfully mobilize the selfie to challenge and disrupt oppressive codes of subjectivity
Codes Colliding in Connective Cultures: The Emergence of the Norwegian Police Emergency Control Room Twitter
Over the last decade, Twitter has become one of the main communication channels for the Norwegian Police Service about ongoing events. Every police district has an official Twitter account staffed from their emergency control rooms. This utilization of a commercial web-based platform with a broad reach within the population has changed the presence of the police in the public in significant yet subtle ways, as a phenomenon where programmatic code, semiotic codes, and formal and implicit codes of conduct meet.
This article provides a re-conceptualization of code as a hybrid analytical concept within a material-discursive framework. It explores how the materiality of technologies—the codes that materialize social media platforms—are integral in shaping our discursive landscapes. In what ways can the concept of codes elucidate the entanglements that create cultural phenomena in connective cultures? The empirical ground for this exploration is based on a combination of computational and qualitative close reading of tweets made by the Norwegian police from September 2011 to August 2021, and analysis of media texts and governmental documents
Powerlessness and Democracy: A Vicious Circle of Power and Hegemonic Relationships
The monograph Ohnmacht in der Demokratie is a sociological evaluation of an empirical survey of qualitative interviews conducted for the project “Willkommenskultur und Demokratie in Deutschland” that examines participation in democratic processes in the Federal Republic of Germany. The author, Nikolai Huke, focuses primarily on the individual’s (in)ability to shape his or her own life and to participate in political processes as well as on structural causes such as political exclusion and overwhelm
Exploring the Interrelations Between Literature and Museums
Matteo Anastasio and Jan Rhein) introduces a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary and intermedial approaches to how literature and museums can intertwine, reflect upon, and enrich each other. It explores the meanings as well as potential of such convergences from the perspectives of both literary narrative and museum practices. As such, the book presents a valuable contribution to literary, cultural, media, and museum studies
