Designing Disappearance: On the Cultural and Affective Histories of Waste

The _Essay explores affective and cultural legacies embedded in disposal architectures. Drawing on various theories of waste, it examines the material histories of domestic disposal and notions of affect and belonging. Central questions include how the design, function, and everyday use of disposal systems shape perceptions of waste; how these architectures relate to notions of citizenship; and how waste is perceived as either a social good or a mere trace of survival. In different literary and cultural contexts, the _Essay examines historically shaped distinctions between purity and pollution, necessity and excess, and structure and disorder through the lenses of Lauren Berlant\u27s concept of intimate publics and cultural theories of wast

How to Curate a Sexist yet Canonized Artwork? : A Model for Feminist Curating of Collections

This _Perspective reflects on the curatorial strategy employed in the DIY exhibition P is for Pussy, curated by myself in the artist community space The Bookstore in Amsterdam West in April 2017. Proposed here is a non-prescriptive curatorial methodology based on the case study of P is for Pussy and abstracted as a way of dealing with forms of social oppression represented in and by the art histories embodied in collections and archives. The methodology entails a change in approach to art within exhibition contexts and combines artistic, curatorial, and academic strategies in order to express critique of sexist representations by visibilizing underlying cultural values. P is for Pussy exhibited artworks featuring women and cats from the collection of The Cat Cabinet (Amsterdam), framed by prints from the history of Western art and juxtaposed with large, narrating wall texts in thematic groupings. The exhibition sought to convey the cognitive and sensorial experience of an argument and challenge accepted modernist modes of viewing and thinking about art. Breaking with both conventional and feminist curatorial consensuses, the greatly criticized concepts of ‘authorial curating’ and determinate argumentation lines within art and curating are brought here for their feminist potential to counter oppressive artworks without censoring them

Extended Minds and Instrumentality: On the Role of the Nonhuman in Human Cognition

This contribution offers a literary approach to extended cognition and asks in which capacity interactions with the nonhuman come to shape cognitive development. Specifically, this question is posed in regards to our active use of nonhuman instruments that are recognized as a reflection of social practices that mediate our engagement with the world. In this sense, the fictional journal entries of this _perspective track the development of novel cognitive structures on the basis of a recently introduced communication device. The narration provides a genealogy of a communal shift in thought and in conclusion advances speculations on the mediating role of instruments. In continuation, the narrative segment is followed by a scholarly reflection which decidedly rejects the idea of cognition as limited to the confines of the head. Through elaborating the hybrid alliances between ourselves and the nonhuman, this second segment mobilizes concerns of the extended mind hypothesis in the context of artificial intelligence. This succinct reflection hence applies questions regarding the mediating role of instruments to the domain of artificial intelligence and asks how computational architectures which actively adapt to our behavioral patterns modify the way in which the instrument relation ought to be critically assessed
