Saint Basil the Great, Master of Philanthropy

    Get PDF
The present study aims to highlight the concept of philanthropy in the writings of the Saint Basil the Great, the manner in which it was materialized during the lifetime of the Great Cappadocian Father and its relevance for the mission of the Orthodox Church in the contemporary society. Man as a social being and philanthropy as a result of the communion in love, following the Trinitarian model, are the main themes of Saint Basil"™s sermons. The study shows that the philanthropy-centered discourse of Saint Basil would not have any impact if it weren"™t reinforced by the personal example, when he shared to the poor all his wealth inherited from his parents and built a whole philanthropic complex on the outskirts of Caesarea. Regarding the importance of St. Basil's writings for the current life of the Church, the study points out that St. Basil was actively involved in the life of society and tried, with audacity and perseverance, to denounce and correct its inequalities. In so doing, he proved to be a leader of the Church whose spiritual, administrative, and moral authority was so great that it could no longer be ignored or challenged by the authority of the state.  Keywords: Saint Basil the Great, Christian philanthropy, social welfare, history of the Christian Churc

    Familia creștină în context contemporan.

    Get PDF
The study focuses on the essential themes of biblical anthropology, as they are present in scriptural revelation. The text aims to define the character and fundamental features of the Christian family, both in the light of the Old and New Testaments. The frameworks of a biblical theology of the Christian family are suggested/outlined, focusing on the New Testament revelation. The pedagogical considerations regarding the family are inspired by the biblical images and examples, both positive and negative, that we find in the pages of the Holy Scriptures, but especially, by the evangelical words of the Lord, respectively, by the Pauline injunctions on this subject. The presentation attempts to outline the strengths of the biblical paradigm and to highlight how the Christian ethos could benefit from the close reading of the passages highlighted in this study

Evrei 13, 10-14 "“ o cuvântare retorică ce militează pentru separația creștinismului de iudaism?

Modern biblical research has claimed that the entire text in Hebrews 13 could be considered a pseudoepigraphy, a foreign text fragment added later on by scribes to the rest of the epistle, in order to give the impression of Saint Paul"™s authority and authenticity, like a more precise post-scriptum. For this very reason, some scholars believed that Hebrews 13 was not part of the original corpus of the epistle to the Hebrews from the very beginning. A more balanced perspective is offered by father Ioan Mihoc, who suggests that the entire epistle has only one canonical author, the issue of chapter 13 being explained thorough the hypothesis of a re-reading or reapplication of chapters 1-12. Beyond historical-critical aspects, Hebrews 13 is a sample of deliberative rhetoric that exhorts the urgent separation of the Christian worship from the requirements of the Jewish religion. I will study the issue from a biblic-rhetorical methodology, which contributes to the originality of this research

    Bocetul în zona Vișeului

In Vișeu area, situated in Maramureș County, the mourning, , is less and less cultivated, due to the change of people"™s mentality and urbanization, fact that makes this genre to be difficult to collect and in some areas it is even on the verge of extinction. For these reasons we thought it would be necessary to save, while still possible, some of these ethnographic remains. Thus, several mournings were registered, textually and melodically analyzed then a compared analysis was made in order to extract the general features of the local mourning. The mourning we still can find in Vișeu area presents, from the point of view of the text, the same general features and many poetic motifs common to the folk line with funeral specific. From melodic point of view, it is based on a modal melodic construction presenting a basic Doric type pentachord structure. The architectonic structure of the local mourning melodies is strophic with AAkBBk form, having four melodic lines. The ambitus of the melodies is restricted, it does not surpass a quint, while the melodic profile is generally descendent

The following study analyzes the liturgical verbal expressions, as well as two dialogues, the initial one and the other final, considered by many scholars to be liturgical. We will interpret the texts considered to be textual clues of interaction with listeners. Apocalypse of St. John the Theologian impresses trough many liturgical elements. Throughout the book we discover a way of praying and address to God that uses vocabulary and style of worship. We find doxologists, hymns, prayers and other literary forms that are specific to liturgical hymnology. Words like "Halleluiah", "Amen" and expressions such as "Grace to you and peace" (Rev. 1, 4), "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rev. 22, 20), "Holy, Holy, Holy" (Rev. 4, 8) are among many others most evidently present in the First Church Liturgy and even in the Jewish Liturgy. The hagiographer of the Revelation often expresses in words and appreciates the relationship with God through the language of the liturgy. Revelation is probably the book of the New Testament that contains the highest explicit concentration of liturgical elements

This paper comprises a modest attempt to follow the incentives given by Mircea Vulcănescu to the Romanian scientific community, which he invited to organize the ideas he exposed in his treatise-outline about the "Romanian Dimension of Existence". This will be undertaken in a brief manner, with the purpose of adding an analysis of the traditional village"™s death, seen as an empirical life-form, and of its immortality, seen as a spiritual Life-form

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS? ORTHODOX PERSPECTIVES ON THEOLOGY, SPIRITUALITY, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY

This paper considers whether Orthodox theology and spirituality can interact with science and technology peacefully and creatively. The issue lies with the popular assumption that the Orthodox follow the early Christians who, supposedly, opposed science and technology. However, traditionally, the early Christians approached human resourcefulness with discernment and wisely. It goes the same for two modern Orthodox theologians, Pelikan and Stăniloae. I consider the scriptural stories of the Fall and the Tower of Babel, showing what they mean for the way theology, spirituality, science, and tech- nology intersect. Then I introduce the anonymous Letter to Diognetus and Max- imus the Confessor"™s Book of Difficulties, especially the parts about the creative coexistence of the four areas; I demonstrate that these sources do not consider them strange bedfellows. These sources show how to read the two scriptural stories and suggest ways out of current impasses. The paper contends that the lessons drawn from these texts lead to a mature Orthodox understanding of current challenges related to scientific and technological advance.
