    Advanced microstructural characterization of the intergranular oxidation of Alloy 600

    Oxidation of solution-annealed Alloy 600 has been performed in a hydrogenated steam environment, which is considered to simulate PWR primary water exposure. FIB and analytical TEM characterization, coupled with detailed SEM analyses, provided unequivocal evidence of localized grain boundary migration and intergranular oxide penetrations. These localized migrations were associated with pronounced Cr and Fe depletions, highlighting the role of the grain boundaries for Cr diffusion for intergranular oxidation. These findings are discussed in relation to the early stages of intergranular oxidation, diffusion-induced grain boundary migration and subsequent SCC initiation

    Cortical auditory evoked potentials as an objective measure of behavioral thresholds in cochlear implant users.

    The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of using cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) as an objective tool for predicting behavioral hearing thresholds in cochlear implant (CI) users. Nine experienced adult CI users of Cochlear(™) devices participated. Behavioral thresholds were measured in CI users across apical, mid and basal electrodes. CAEPs were measured for the same stimuli (50 ms pulse trains of 900-pps rate) at a range of input levels across the individual's psychophysical dynamic range (DR). Amplitude growth functions using global field power (GFP) were plotted, and from this the CAEP thresholds were extrapolated and compared to the behavioral thresholds. Increased amplitude and decreased latency of the N1-P2 response was seen with increasing input level. A strong correlation was found between CAEP and behavioral thresholds (r = 0.93), implying that the cortical response may be more useful as an objective programming tool for cochlear implants than the auditory nerve response

    Sexist discourse is “language in use,” either spoken words or written texts, which stereotypes or discriminates against a person or a group of people on the basis of their gender. Early feminist work on gender, sexism, and language began to show a connection between language and the (re)production of sexism. However, much of this work is now considered outdated by researchers because it perpetuated essentialist understandings of sexism as something inherent in particular words and utterances. As the influence of constructionism has grown, researchers across the social sciences and humanities have come to view linguistic meanings as fluid rather than fixed, and as dependent on the social context in which they are embedded.     Trends in survival for teenagers and young adults with cancer in the UK 1992-2006.

    BACKGROUND: Although relatively rare, cancer in teenagers and young adults (TYA) is the most common disease-related cause of death and makes a major contribution to years of life lost in this age group. There is a growing awareness of the distinctive needs of this age group and drive for greater understanding of how outcomes can be improved. We present here the latest TYA survival trends data for the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: Using national cancer registry data, we calculated five-year relative survival for all 15-24year olds diagnosed with cancer or a borderline/benign CNS tumour in the UK during the periods 1992-1996, 1997-2001 and 2002-2006. We analysed trends in survival for all cancers combined and for eighteen specified groups that together represent the majority of TYA cancers. We compared our data with published data for Europe, North America and Australia. RESULTS: Five-year survival for all cancers combined increased from 75.5% in 1992-1996 to 82.2% in 2002-2006 (

    The re-assembly of chromatin following DNA replication is a critical event in the maintenance of genome integrity. Histone H3 acetylation at K56 and phosphorylation at T45 are two important chromatin modifications that accompany chromatin assembly. Here we have identified the protein kinase Pkc1 as a key regulator that coordinates the deposition of these modifications in S. cerevisiae under conditions of replicative stress. Pkc1 phosphorylates the histone acetyl transferase Rtt109 and promotes its ability to acetylate H3K56. Our data also reveal novel cross-talk between two different histone modifications as Pkc1 also enhances H3T45 phosphorylation and this modification is required for H3K56 acetylation. Our data therefore reveal an important role for Pkc1 in coordinating the deposition of two different histone modifications that are important for chromatin assembly
