    Intentionality and complex systems theory: A new direction for language learning psychology

    This chapter examines the combined potential of the constructs of intentionality and Complex Systems Theory, as a new theoretical direction for language learning psychology. The chapter begins with theoretical discussion of the properties of complex systems. This leads to the definition of a Complex System of Intentions, a conceptual model for understanding intentionalities that are present at individual, small group and societal levels, as well as their interrelations. Following that, key properties of the system are illustrated by juxtaposing empirical data from two research projects in Norway and Greece. First, we document the emergence of a ‘performance intentionality’ in learners’ interaction in an English L2 classroom in Norway. Next, we discuss how a ‘competition intentionality’ in a private language school in Greece emerged from interaction with the state school system, and we document its effects on language learning activity. In both cases, a data-driven analysis is used to demonstrate the emergence of the intentionalities and their generative effects, i.e., the ways in which they recursively shaped the system from which they had emerged. We conclude by revisiting the organisational openness of the system, and the processes of emergence and morphogenesis that were traced in the data, and by connecting them to Complex Systems Theory, while exploring the implications of a complexity outlook for language learning research

    Cyanoethyl cellulose-based nanocomposite dielectric for low-voltage, solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs)

    Low voltage organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using solution-processed cyanoethyl cellulose (CEC) and CEC-based nanocomposites as the gate dielectric are demonstrated. Barium strontium titanate (BST) nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed in CEC to form the high-k (18.0 ± 0.2 at 1 kHz) nanocomposite insulator layer. The optimised p-channel DPPTTT OFETs with BST-CEC nanocomposite as the gate dielectric operate with minimal hysteresis, display field-effect mobilities in excess of 1 cm^2/Vs at 3 V, possess low subthreshold swings (132 ± 8 mV/dec), and have on/off ratios greater than 10^3. Addition of a 40-50 nm layer of cross-linked poly(vinyl phenol) (PVP) on the surface of the nanocomposite layer significantly decreases the gate leakage current (<10^-7 A/cm^2 at ± 3 V) and the threshold voltage (<- 0.7 V) enabling operation of the OFETs at 1.5 V. The presented bilayer BST-CEC/PVP dielectrics are a promising alternative for the fabrication of low voltage, solution-processed OFETs that are suitable for use in low power, portable electronics

    Pleistocene plateau ice fields in the High Atlas, Morocco

    Large ice fields (>25 km2) formed over the Tazaghart and Iouzagner plateaux of the High Atlas, Morocco, during the Late Pleistocene. The plateau ice fields were drained by large valley glaciers forming a series of moraine assemblages. Four moraine units have been mapped and subdivided on the basis of morphostratigraphy and the degree of soil weathering. Soil profile development index (PDI) values indicate that the moraine units are widely separated in time with the oldest moraines deeply weathered and degraded whereas soils are absent on the youngest moraines. The highest moraine unit was formed by a small niche glacier which was present as recently as the mid 20th Century. Pleistocene glaciers are likely to have been associated with wetter conditions than today in addition to colder air temperatures. Combined with ice in neighbouring areas, such as the Toubkal Massif, the SW High Atlas supported some of the largest glaciers in Africa during the Pleistocene. The extent of glaciation with ice exploiting and breaching drainage divides has major implications for landscape development. The evolution of the High Atlas is therefore strongly shaped by glaciation and this is closely intertwined with tectonic, fluvial and slope processes

    Media and New Religions in Japan

    Japanese "new religions" (shinshūkyō) have used various media forms for training, communicating with members, presenting their messages, reinforcing or protecting the image of the leader, and, potentially, attracting converts. In this book the complex and dual relationship between media and new religions is investigated by looking at the tensions groups face between the need for visibility and the risks of facing attacks and criticism through media. Indeed media and new technologies have been extensively used by religious groups not only to spread their messages and to try to reach a wider audience, but also to promote themselves as a highly modern and up-to-date form of religion appropriate for a modern technological age. In 1980s and early 1990s some movements, such as Agonshū , Kōfuku no Kagaku, and Aum Shinrikyō came into prominence especially via the use of media (initially publications, but also ritual broadcasts, advertising campaigns, and public media events). This created new modes of ritual engagement and new ways of interactions between leaders and members. The aim of this book is to develop and illustrate particular key issues in the wider new religions and media nexus by using specific movements as examples. In particular, the analysis of the interaction between media and new religions will focus primarily on three case studies predominantly during the first period of development of the groups

    Ambiguity Aversion and Underdiversification

    We examine asset allocation decisions under smooth ambiguity aversion when an investor has a prior degree of belief in an asset pricing model (e.g., the domestic CAPM). Different from a Bayesian approach, the investor separately relies on the conditional distribution of returns and on the posterior over parameters to make decisions, rather than on the predictive distribution of returns that integrates priors and likelihood information. We find that in the perspective of US investors, ambiguity aversion generates strong home bias in equity holdings, regardless of beliefs in the CAPM or risk aversion. Results become stronger under regime-switching investment opportunities

    Electron- and photon-impact ionization of furfural

    The He() photoelectron spectrum of furfural has been investigated, with its vibrational structure assigned for the first time. The ground and excited ionized states are assigned through ab initio calculations performed at the outer-valence Green’s function level. Triple differential cross sections (TDCSs) for electron-impact ionization of the unresolved combination of the 4a′′+ 21a′ highest and next-highest occupied molecular orbitals have also been obtained. Experimental TDCSs are recorded in a combination of asymmetric coplanar and doubly symmetric coplanar kinematics. The experimental TDCSs are compared to theoretical calculations, obtained within a molecular 3-body distorted wave framework that employed either an orientation average or proper TDCS average. The proper average calculations suggest that they may resolve some of the discrepancies regarding the angular distributions of the TDCS, when compared to calculations employing the orbital average

    Living well with dementia, Workshop at the North West Dementia Action Alliance Learning Event:Building dementia friendly communities

    The North West Dementia Action Alliance hosted a learning event around the North West Dementia Action Alliances and building dementia friendly communities on March 26, 2015. As part of this day-long event, delegates were asked to explore ‘living well with dementia’, in the context of health and social care. Approximately 115 people attended this workshop, including approximately 30% people living with dementia and their carers, together with people working in dementia care from a range of organisations. The aims of the workshop were to find out participants’ thoughts on what is helpful and unhelpful in supporting people to live well with dementia in health and social care, and to share ideas about what could be done better. The results were to be shared with the Dementia Action Alliance and their partners and the NHS Strategic Clinical Networks for Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria. Ketso, a hands-on toolkit for creative engagement, was used to engage the participants in dialogue and gather their ideas. A Ketso kit provides a set of table-top tools that are used to capture and display people's ideas. Participants write their ideas on colour-coded shapes, and place them on a felt workspace. As participants are guided through a structured sequence of questions, they see the group’s thoughts taking shape, encouraging cooperation, inclusive dialogue and creative thinking.Figure 1: Participants using Ketso to develop ideas in the workshop This report presents the ideas that were highlighted as most important by the participants themselves, collated by the Ketso team.     Polymerization kinetics and impact of post polymerization on the Degree of Conversion of bulk-fill resin-composite at clinically relevant depth

    Objective: Since bulk-fill (BF) resin composites should cure efficiently to a depth up to 4 mm, the aim of the study was to determine the time-dependence of degree of conversion (DC) at that depth during 24 h post-irradiation. Methods: Eight representative BF resin composites were studied [x-tra base (XTB), Venus Bulk Fill (VBF), Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TECBF), Sonic Fill (SF), Filtek Bulk Fill (FBF), everX Posterior (eXP), Beautifil-Bulk Flowable (BBF), Beautifil-Bulk Restorative (BBR)]. Specimens were fabricated in white Delrin moulds of 4 mm height and 5 mm internal diameter directly on an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessory attachment of an (FTIR) spectrometer (Nicolet iS50, Thermo Fisher, Madison, USA). Upper specimen surfaces were irradiated in situ for 20 s with an LED curing unit (Elipar S10 with average tip irradiance of 1200 mW/cm2). Spectra from the lower surface were recorded continuously in real-time for 5 min and then at 30 and 60 min and 24 h post irradiation. Results: Mean ranges of DC4mm (%) of the materials at 4 mm depth were 39-67; 48-75; 45-74; and 50-72 at 5, 30 and 60 min and 24 h respectively. DCs for XTB, VBF, TECBF, FBF, BBR increased significantly 30 min after irradiation (p0.05). DC for SF was not affected by subsequent time after 5 min (p>0.05). For eXP and BBF, DC increased 24 h after irradiation (
