Controls on the Fate and Speciation of Np(V) During Iron (Oxyhydr)oxide Crystallization
The speciation and fate of neptunium as Np(V)O2+ during the crystallization of ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite was explored in a range of systems. Adsorption of NpO2+ to iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxide phases was reversible and, for ferrihydrite, occurred through the formation of mononuclear bidentate surface complexes. By contrast, chemical extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses showed the incorporation of Np(V) into the structure of hematite during its crystallization from ferrihydrite (pH 10.5). This occurred through direct replacement of octahedrally coordinated Fe(III) by Np(V) in neptunate-like coordination. Subsequent analyses on mixed goethite and hematite crystallization products (pH 9.5 and 11) showed that Np(V) was incorporated during crystallization. Conversely, there was limited evidence for Np(V) incorporation during goethite crystallization at the extreme pH of 13.3. This is likely due to the formation of a Np(V) hydroxide precipitate preventing incorporation into the goethite particles. Overall these data highlight the complex behavior of Np(V) during the crystallization of iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, and demonstrate clear evidence for neptunium incorporation into environmentally important mineral phases. This extends our knowledge of the range of geochemical conditions under which there is potential for long-term immobilization of radiotoxic Np in natural and engineered environments
Does reporting behaviour bias the measurement of social inequalities in self-rated health in Indonesia? An anchoring vignette analysis
Studies on self-rated health outcomes are fraught with problems when individuals’ reporting behaviour is systematically biased by demographic, socio-economic, or cultural factors. Analysing the data drawn from the Indonesia Family Life Survey 2007, this paper aims to investigate the extent of differential health reporting behaviour by demographic and socio-economic status among Indonesians aged 40 and older (N = 3735). Methods Interpersonal heterogeneity in reporting style is identified by asking respondents to rate a number of vignettes that describe varying levels of health status in targeted health domains (mobility, pain, cognition, sleep, depression, and breathing) using the same ordinal response scale that is applied to the self-report health question. A compound hierarchical ordered probit model is fitted to obtain health differences by demographic and socio-economic status. The obtained regression coefficients are then compared to the standard ordered probit model. Results We find that Indonesians with more education tend to rate a given health status in each domain more negatively than their less-educated counterparts. Allowing for such differential reporting behaviour results in relatively stronger positive education effects. Conclusion There is a need to correct for differential reporting behaviour using vignettes when analysing self-rated health measures in older adults in Indonesia. Unless such an adjustment is made, the salutary effect of education will be underestimated
Ranking charity applications
How can a charity ensure that only its most worthy causes are supported? One approach that has proven effective in the past is AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). Now a new method – based on a hybrid AHP / Evidential Reasoning (ER) adaptation - has become available, claiming distinct advantages over straight AHP. By contrasting the two procedures for a real-life dataset – we demonstrate AHP/ER’s superiority in both theoretical and practical respects
Non-Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Copper(II) Paddlewheel and Oligoparaxylene-Isophthalate Linkers:Synthesis, Structure and Gas Adsorption
Two metal–organic framework materials, MFM-130 and MFM-131 (MFM = Manchester Framework Material), have been synthesized using two oligoparaxylene (OPX) tetracarboxylate linkers containing four and five aromatic rings, respectively. Both fof-type non-interpenetrated networks contain Kagomé lattice layers comprising [Cu2(COO)4] paddlewheel units and isophthalates, which are pillared by the OPX linkers. Desolvated MFM-130, MFM-130a, shows permanent porosity (BET surface area of 2173 m2/g, pore volume of 1.0 cm3/g), high H2 storage capacity at 77 K (5.3 wt% at 20 bar and 2.2 wt% at 1 bar), and a higher CH4 adsorption uptake (163 cm3(STP)/cm3 (35 bar and 298 K)) compared with its structural analogue, NOTT-103. MFM-130a also shows impressive selective adsorption of C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6 over CH4 at room temperature, indicating its potential for separation of C2 hydrocarbons from CH4. The single-crystal structure of MFM-131 confirms that the methyl substituents of the paraxylene units block the windows in the Kagomé lattice layer of the framework, effectively inhibiting network interpenetration in MFM-131. This situation is to be contrasted with that of the doubly interpenetrated oligophenylene analogue, NOTT-104. Calculation of the mechanical properties of these two MOFs confirms and explains the instability of MFM-131 upon desolvation in contrast to the behavior of MFM-130. The incorporation of paraxylene units, therefore, provides an efficient method for preventing network interpenetration as well as accessing new functional materials with modified and selective sorption properties for gas substrates
Micromechanical modelling of deformation and fracture of hydrating cement paste using X-ray computed tomography characterisation
Cement paste is the basic but most complex component in cement composites, which are the dominant construction material in the world. Understanding and predicting elastic properties and fracture of hydrating cement paste are challenging tasks due to its complex microstructure, but important for durability assessments and life extension decisions. A recently proposed microstructure-informed site-bond model with elastic-brittle spring bundles is developed further to predict the evolution of elastic properties and fracture behaviour of cement paste. It is based on microstructure characteristics of hydrating cement paste obtained from X-ray computed microtomography (micro-CT) with a spatial resolution of 0.5 µm/voxel. Volume fraction and size distribution of anhydrous cement grains are used to determine the model length scale and pore-less elasticity. Porosity and pore size distribution are used for tuning elastic and failure properties of individual bonds. The fracture process is simulated by consecutive removal of bonds subject to surface energy based failure criterion. The stress-strain response and elastic properties of hardened cement pastes with curing ages of 1, 7 and 28 days are obtained. The simulated Young’s modulus and deformation response prior to peak stress agree very well with the experimental data. The proposed model provides an effective tool to evaluate time evolution of elastic properties and to simulate micro-cracks initiation, propagation, coalescence and localization
Diagnostic accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for assessment of depression in type II diabetes mellitus and / or coronary heart disease in primary care
Background Depression is common among type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2)/coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and is associated with adverse health effects. A promising strategy to reduce burden of disease is to identify patients at risk for depression in order to offer indicated prevention. This study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to be used as a tool to identify high risk patients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 586 consecutive DM2/CHD patients aged >18 were recruited through 23 general practices. PHQ-9 outcomes were compared to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), which was considered the reference standard. Diagnostic accuracy was evaluated for minor and major depression, comparing both sum- and algorithm based PHQ-9 scores. Results For minor depression, the optimal cut-off score was 8 (sensitivity 71%, specificity 71% and an AUC of 0.74). For major depression, the optimal cut-off score was 10 resulting in a sensitivity of 84%, a specificity of 82%, and an AUC of 0.88. The positive predictive value of the PHQ-9 algorithm for diagnosing minor and major depression was 25% and 33%, respectively. Limitations Two main limitations apply. MINI Interviewers were not blinded for PHQ-9 scores and less than 10% of all invited patients could be included in the analyses. This could have resulted in biased outcomes. Conclusions The PHQ-9 sum score performs well in identifying patients at high risk of minor and major depression. However, the PHQ-9 showed suboptimal results for diagnostic purposes. Therefore, it is recommended to combine the use of the PHQ-9 with further diagnostics to identify depression.</p
Transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 4 and airway sensory afferent activation: Role of adenosine triphosphate
BACKGROUND:Sensory nerves innervating the airways play an important role in regulating various cardiopulmonary functions, maintaining homeostasis under healthy conditions and contributing to pathophysiology in disease states. Hypo-osmotic solutions elicit sensory reflexes, including cough, and are a potent stimulus for airway narrowing in asthmatic patients, but the mechanisms involved are not known. Transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 4 (TRPV4) is widely expressed in the respiratory tract, but its role as a peripheral nociceptor has not been explored.OBJECTIVE:We hypothesized that TRPV4 is expressed on airway afferents and is a key osmosensor initiating reflex events in the lung.METHODS:We used guinea pig primary cells, tissue bioassay, in vivo electrophysiology, and a guinea pig conscious cough model to investigate a role for TRPV4 in mediating sensory nerve activation in vagal afferents and the possible downstream signaling mechanisms. Human vagus nerve was used to confirm key observations in animal tissues.RESULTS:Here we show TRPV4-induced activation of guinea pig airway-specific primary nodose ganglion cells. TRPV4 ligands and hypo-osmotic solutions caused depolarization of murine, guinea pig, and human vagus and firing of Aδ-fibers (not C-fibers), which was inhibited by TRPV4 and P2X3 receptor antagonists. Both antagonists blocked TRPV4-induced cough.CONCLUSION:This study identifies the TRPV4-ATP-P2X3 interaction as a key osmosensing pathway involved in airway sensory nerve reflexes. The absence of TRPV4-ATP-mediated effects on C-fibers indicates a distinct neurobiology for this ion channel and implicates TRPV4 as a novel therapeutic target for neuronal hyperresponsiveness in the airways and symptoms, such as cough
Constrained Approximation of Effective Generators for Multiscale Stochastic Reaction Networks and Application to Conditioned Path Sampling
Efficient analysis and simulation of multiscale systems of chemical kinetics is an ongoing area for research, and is the source of many theoretical and compu- tational challenges. In this paper, we present a significant improvement to the constrained approach, which allows us to compute the effective generator of the slow variables, without the need for expensive stochastic simulations. This is done through finding the null space of the generator of the constrained system. For complex systems where this is not possible, the constrained approach can then be applied in turn to the constrained system in a nested manner, mean- ing that the problem can be broken down into solving many small eigenvalue problems. Moreover, this methodology does not rely on the quasi steady-state assumption, meaning that the effective dynamics that are approximated are highly accurate, and in the case of systems with only monomolecular reactions, are exact. We will demonstrate this with some numerics, and also use the effective generators to sample paths which are conditioned on their endpoints
