Decoupling seasonal fluctuations in fluvial discharge from the tidal signature in ancient deltaic deposits: an example from the Neuquén Basin, Argentina.
Fluvial discharge fluctuations are a fundamental characteristic of almost all modern rivers and can produce distinctive deposits that are rarely described from ancient fluvial or mixed-energy successions. Large-scale outcrops from the Middle Jurassic Lajas Formation (Argentina) expose a well-constrained stratigraphic succession of marginal-marine deposits with a strong fluvial influence and well-known tidal indicators. The studied deposits show decimetre-scale interbedding of coarser- and finer-grained facies with mixed fluvial and tidal affinities. The alternation of these two types of beds forms non-cyclic successions that are interpreted to be the result of seasonal variation in river discharge, rather than regular and predictable changes in current velocity caused by tides. Seasonal bedding is present in bar deposits that form within or at the mouth of minor and major channels. Seasonal bedding is not preserved in channel thalweg deposits, where river flood processes were too powerful, or in floodplain, muddy interdistributary-bay, prodelta and transgressive deposits, where the river signal was weak and sporadic. The identification of sedimentary facies characteristic of seasonal river discharge variations is important for accurate interpretation of ancient deltaic process regime
How does customer affiliative behaviour shape the outcomes of employee emotion regulation? A daily diary study of supermarket checkout operators
Although employees’ frequently regulate their emotions when serving customers, few studies have examined how customer behaviour shapes the outcomes of employees’ emotion regulation. Drawing on existing literature, this paper tests two alternative models of customer affiliative behaviour, employee emotion regulation (surface acting, deep acting) and employee outcomes (emotional exhaustion, objective task performance). In one model, customer affiliative behaviour is a mechanism that mediates the relationship between employee emotion regulation and outcomes, and in the other model it moderates this relationship. The models were tested on data drawn from a daily diary study of 49 supermarket checkout operators and store performance records. The findings from multilevel analyses make a significant contribution to understanding how a key part of the social context during service interactions (i.e., customer affiliative behaviour) is a mechanism and moderator of employee emotion regulation. Results show that the effects of deep and surface acting on employee well-being are mediated by customer affiliative behaviour, and that the relationship between surface acting and task performance is mediated by customer affiliative behaviour and emotional exhaustion. In addition, customer affiliative behaviour moderated the relationship between deep acting and emotional exhaustion, and the indirect effect of deep acting on task performance through emotional exhaustion
Performance Improvement of a Counter-Flowing Double-Pipe Heat Exchanger Partially Filled with a Metal Foam and Rotating Coaxially
In order to enhance the amount of heat transported in a double-pipe heat exchanger, a compound enhancement is proposed herein incorporating both active and passive methods. The first one is through introducing secondary flows in the vicinity of the conducting surface using metal foam guiding vanes, which are fixed obliquely and rotating coaxially to trap fluid particles while rotation and then force them to flow over the conducting surface. The other is via covering the conducting surface between the two pipes with a metal foam layer to improve the heat conductance across it. This proposal is examined numerically by studying the three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, and laminar convective fluid flow in a counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger partially filled with high porosity metal foam and rotating in a coaxial-mode. In regards to the influence of rotation, both the centrifugal buoyancy and Coriolis forces are considered in the current study. The generalised model is used to mathematically simulate the momentum equations in the porous regions employing the Boussinesq approximation for the density variation. Moreover, thermal dispersion has been taken into account with considering that fluid and solid phases are in a local thermal non-equilibrium. Computations are performed for a range of design parameters influencing the performance achieved such as the operating conditions and the configuration of the guiding vanes utilised. The results are presented by means of the heat exchanger effectiveness, pressure drop, and the overall system performance. The current proposal has proved its potential to enhance the heat transported considerably with saving significant amount of the pumping power required compared to the corresponding heat exchangers, which are fully filled with metal foam. Also, the data obtained reveal an obvious impact of the design parameters inspected on both the heat exchanged and the pressure loss; and hence, the overall performance obtained. Although the heat exchanger effectiveness can be improved considerably by manipulating the design factors, care must be taken to avoid unjustified expenses resulted from potential augmentation in pressure drop
Litter, gender and brand: The anticipation of incivilities and perceptions of crime prevalence.
This paper isolates litter as a physical incivility in a film-based experiment, demonstrating the impact of litter on participants’ anticipation of a wide range of both physical and social incivilities, and on their perceptions of crime prevalence. Such relationships have not previously been examined, partly because litter has rarely been the focus of earlier studies on incivilities. This paper also tests for possible interaction effects in these relationships involving gender (finding no significant interaction), as well as examining whether there is a difference in the anticipation of incivilities and perceptions of crime prevalence between participants exposed to branded as opposed to unbranded litter (finding no difference between the two groups). Litter is often viewed as a tolerable nuisance; and not always treated as a priority. This study suggests prioritising funds towards more targeted interventions to reduce litter might result in some ‘quick wins’ – most notably, reducing perceptions of crime prevalence

Job characteristics, well-being and risky behaviour amongst pharmacists
Healthcare practitioners’ fitness to practise has often been linked to their personal and demographic characteristics. It is possible that situational factors, such as the work environment and physical or psychological well-being, also have an influence on an individual’s fitness to practise. However, it is unclear how these factors might be linked to behaviours that risk compromising fitness to practise. The aim of this study was to examine the association between job characteristics, well-being and behaviour reflecting risky practice amongst a sample of registered pharmacists in a region of the United Kingdom. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional self-report survey of 517 pharmacists. These data were subjected to principal component analysis and path analysis, with job characteristics (demand, autonomy and feedback) and well-being (distress and perceived competence) as the predictors and behaviour as the outcome variable. Two aspects of behaviour were found: Overloading (taking on more work than one can comfortably manage) and risk taking (working at or beyond boundaries of safe practice). Separate path models including either job characteristics or well-being as independent variables provided a good fit to the data-set. Of the job characteristics, demand had the strongest association with behaviour, while the association between well-being and risky behaviour differed according to the aspect of behaviour being assessed. The findings suggest that, in general terms, situational factors should be considered alongside personal factors when assessing, judging or remediating fitness to practise. They also suggest the presence of different facets to the relationship between job characteristics, well-being and risky behaviour amongst pharmacists
