    Spectators’ Aesthetic Experience of Sound and Movement in Dance Performance: A Transdisciplinary Investigation

    We utilise qualitative audience research and functional brain imaging (fMRI) to examine the aesthetic experience of watching dance both with and without music. This transdisciplinary approach was motivated by the recognition that the aesthetic experience of dance revealed through conscious interpretation could have neural correlates in brain activity. When audiences were engaged in watching dance accompanied by music, the fMRI data revealed evidence of greater intersubject correlation in a left anterior region of the superior temporal gyrus known to be involved in complex audio processing. Moreover, the qualitative data revealed how spectators derived pleasure from finding convergences between two complex stimuli (dance and music). Without music, greater intersubject correlation was found bilaterally in a posterior region of the superior temporal gyrus, showing that bodily sounds such as breath provide a more salient auditory signal than music in primary auditory regions. Watching dance without music also resulted in increased intersubject correlation amongst spectators in the parietal and occipitotemporal cortices, suggesting a greater influence of the body than when interpreting the dance stimuli with music. Similarly, the audience research found evidence of corporeally focused experience, but suggests that while embodied responses were common across spectators, they were accompanied by different evaluative judgements

    Distributed adaptive controllers for cooperative output regulation of heterogeneous agents over directed graphs

    This paper considers the cooperative output regulation problem for linear multi-agent systems with a directed communication graph, heterogeneous linear subsystems, and an exosystem whose output is available to only a subset of subsystems. Both the cases with nominal and uncertain linear subsystems are studied. For the case with nominal linear subsystems, a distributed adaptive observer-based controller is designed, where the distributed adaptive observer is implemented for the subsystems to estimate the exogenous signal. For the case with uncertain linear subsystems, the proposed distributed observer and the internal model principle are combined to solve the robust cooperative output regulation problem. Compared with the existing works, one main contribution of this paper is that the proposed control schemes can be designed and implemented by each subsystem in a fully distributed fashion for a class of directed graphs

    Numerical Evaluation of the Compact Acoustic Green's Function for Scattering Problems

    The reduction of noise generated by new and existing engineering products is becoming of increasing commercial importance. Noise prediction schemes are important tools available to help us understand and develop a means of controlling noise. Hybrid noise prediction schemes alleviate many issues associated with exclusively numerical or analytical approaches. These schemes often make use of a Green's function to compute the sound field -- the Green's function representing geometrical scattering effects. Current hybrid schemes are limited to propagating noise in simple geometries for which the Green's function is known. In order to extend hybrid schemes to more general geometries, we develop here a robust, semi-analytical computational method to compute Green's functions for more general geometries in both 2D and 3D. The class of Green's functions considered here can be constructed through conformal mapping of the geometry to a canonical domain. Traditionally, this would only be possible if the mapping could be expressed analytically. Here we combine the traditional algorithm with a numerical mapping procedure to allow the Green's function to be computed for more general geometries. The accuracy is assessed through application to 2D benchmark problems for which analytical solutions are known. Although we assess the accuracy and speed of the method on 2D problems only, the extension to 3D only requires an additional execution of the same computational procedure for the extra dimension with a predictable effect on these two properties. We compute a Green's function for a baffle in a 2D channel, an important geometry in vortex sound problems, and a 3D projection from the half-plane. The semi-analytical method presented here demonstrates calculation of the Green's function accurately and robustly by avoiding particular conformal transformations and the evaluation of potential models containing singularities

    Representative residential LV feeders: A case study for the North West of England

    The adoption of residential-scale low carbon technologies, such as photovoltaic panels or electric vehicles, is expected to significantly increase in the near future. Therefore, it is important for distribution network operators (DNOs) to understand the impacts that these technologies may have, particularly, on low voltage (LV) networks. The challenge, however, is that these LV networks are large in number and diverse in characteristics. In this work, four clustering algorithms (hierarchical clustering, k-medoids++, improved k-means++ and Gaussian Mixture Model - GMM), are applied to a set of 232 residential LV feeders from the North West of England to obtain representative feeders. Moreover, time-series monitoring data, presence of residential-scale generation and detailed customer classification are considered in the analysis. Multiple validity indices are used to identify the most suitable algorithm. The improved k-means++ and GMM showed the best performances resulting in eleven representative feeders with prominent characteristics such as number and type of customers, total cable length, neutral current, and presence of generation. Crucially, the results from studies performed on these feeders can then be extrapolated to those they represent; simplifying the analyses to be carried out by DNOs. This is demonstrated with a hosting capacity assessment of photovoltaic panels in LV feeders

    Forced migration and the city: irregularity, informality, and the politics of presence

    This paper explores the relationship between forced migration and the city. The paper outlines four accounts of the city centred on: displacement and the camp-city, dispersal and refugee resettlement, the ‘re-scaling’ of borders, and the city as a sanctuary. Whilst valuable, these discussions maintain a focus on sovereign authority that tends to prioritize the policing of forced migration over the possibilities for contestation that also emerge through cities. Arguing for a fuller engagement with debates in urban geography, this paper considers how discussions of urban informality and the politics of presence may better unpack the urban character of forced migration
