Attitudes and perceptions towards microalgae as an alternative food: A consumer segmentation in Switzerland

Microalgae can be considered an alternative food with a great future in the food industry due to their nutritional composition and sustainable benefits. In this context, this study aimed to identify segments of consumers in Switzerland regarding their attitudes and perceptions towards microalgae-based foods, describing their behavioural patterns and sociodemographic characteristics. Flyers containing a link to an online survey were sent to randomly selected postal codes in Switzerland. After data cleaning, 584 questionnaires remained. Cluster analyses were performed to segment consumers, and six distinguished consumer segments were identified. The results indicated four segments with a more positive attitude towards microalgae: ‘microalgae supporters and health eaters,’ ‘innovative and adventurous’, ‘aware and open-minded’ and ‘uninformed but susceptible.’ These segments were, therefore, more open to accepting and consuming microalgae-based foods. Strategies for reaching these segments, as well as the ones more sceptical towards microalgae, named ‘conservatives’ and ‘microalgae avoiders and traditional’, were proposed. This information can be valuable for microalgae producers, marketers and policymakers, helping to increase the demand for these alternative and sustainable foods

Hindsight Bias and Trust in Government

    No full text
We empirically assess whether hindsight bias affects citizens’ evaluation of their political actors. Using an incentivized elicitation technique, we demonstrate that people systemat- ically misremember their past policy preferences regarding how to best fight the Covid-19 pandemic. At the peak of the first wave in the United States, the average respondent mis- takenly believes they supported significantly stricter restrictions at the onset of the first wave than they actually did. Exogenous variation in the extent of hindsight bias, induced through a randomized survey experiment, indicates that hindsight bias has a negative causal impact on the change in trust in government

Factors influencing the willingness to purchase and consume microalgae-based foods: An exploratory consumer study

The aim of this study was to identify factors that influence consumers’ willingness to purchase and consume microalgae-based foods. Data from an online survey (n = 583) conducted in Switzerland were analysed using multiple linear regression. The model revealed that the consumers interested in purchasing and consuming microalgae-based foods had low scepticism towards new food technologies, believed that high meat production and consumption negatively impact sustainability and were interested in protecting the environment. The results contribute to the existing literature and assist the food industry and the gastronomy sector in reaching target consumer groups

The predatory mite Pronematus ubiquitus curbs Aculops lycopersici damage under greenhouse conditions

Background: The tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici, is a major worldwide pest infesting tomato crops for which only few control methods are available. At present, no commercialized beneficia organism has proven to be an effective biological of an iolinid mite, Pronematus ubiquitus, as a method against A. lycopersici in comparison with a curative treatment in a replicated experiment the greenhouse. Results: After pre-establishment of P. ubiquitus supplied with cattail pollen, followed by infestation of A. lycopersici, the predator was able to reduce pest populations by 98% as compared with control plants. Probably due to lack of food and high temperature, the number of P. ubiquitus decreased during the season and so the Eriophyid population rose, along with crop damage. The sulphur treatment could stop the progress of A. lycopersici, but their population levels remained high. Conclusion: Pronematus ubiquitus has great potential to prevent the establishment of the tomato russet mite. Even if a curative treatment affects the pest mite, the use of a preventive method is preferable as such insecticides/acaricides are harmful for beneficials and are applied after symptom appearance, when the pest pressure is already high. Despite the need to optimize management of the predator throughout the season, P. ubiquitus proved to be able to establish successfully on tomato plants. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry

Foaming properties of plant protein blends prepared using commercial faba bean and hemp protein concentrates at different faba bean/hemp protein ratios

Faba bean and hemp protein blends offer potential for the formulation of plant-based products due to their complementary amino acid compositions. This study evaluated the chemical composition, particle size, protein solubility and foaming properties of four commercial protein concentrates (two faba bean-based: FBC1 and FBC2, and two hemp-based: HPC1 and HPC2) and their blends at different faba bean/hemp protein ratios. The concentrates consisted mainly of albumins and globulins, some of which could have suffered alterations during processing, especially in HPC2 and FBC2. Both FBCs and HPCs made proportional contributions to the protein solubility observed in the blends. However, FBC1:HPC2 blends consistently demonstrated smaller particle sizes across all investigated ratios than those predicted by linear interpolation. Foaming properties of the four concentrates were comparable, except for HPC2, which did not foam. FBC1:HPC2 blends formed stable foams, whereas FBC2:HPC2 blends resulted in unstable foams. These results suggested that foam-destabilising factors were dominant in HPC2, which were counteracted by foam-stabilising factors in FBC1 and/or dilution effects. FBC1:HPC2 blends exhibited early indications of synergistic interactions, enhancing foam properties. This study demonstrates the potential of faba bean and hemp protein blends for foam-based food applications and the importance of considering their extraction processing history
