    ÁREAS DE ESCALA MIGRATORIA Y DORMIDERO COMUNITARIO DEL AGUILUCHO CHICO (BUTEO ALBIGULA) DURANTE SU MIGRACIÓN HACIA EL NORTE EN LOS ANDES

    El aguilucho chico (Buteo albigula) es el único Accipitridae sudamericano que realiza migraciones transecuatoriales en el sistema Austral-neotropical, y hasta ahora conocemos muy poco sobre su ecología migratoria. Aquí describimos el uso de áreas de escala y dormide-ro comunitario por parte de esta especie durante su migración hacia el norte en el otoño austral. Registramos un dormidero comunitario, ocupado por hasta 15 individuos simultáneamente, en una pequeña plantación de eucaliptos (Eucalyptus globulus) en Putre (extremo norte de Chile, 3.500 m s.n.m.). En el Valle del Mantaro (centro de Perú, 3.250 m s.n.m.) observamos varios individuos cazando en áreas agrícolas y descansando en plantaciones de eucaliptos. Uno de ellos (seguido por telemetría satelital) permaneció en el área por 17 días, para luego continuar su migración hacia el norte. Nuestras observaciones revelan la existencia de zonas de congregación temporal del aguilucho chico que son importantes para su conservación

    The confusing taxonomic history of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri) casts doubt on whether a nest and egg from Brazilian Atlantic Forest might instead belong to the Greenish Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias virescens). A nest of P. burmeisteri placed 7.6 m.-up on a horizontal fork in a secondary horizontal branch of Myroxylon peruiferum in late December 2013 in the Yungas of Argentina was a relatively large cup lined and covered with green "old-man's beard" in the upper outer rim, with abundant relatively large flakes of foliar lichens on the sides. Another nest found in early September 1995 in the Atlantic Forest of Paraguay was a cup made of twigs, roots and covered in lichen, placed c.20 m.-up on a horizontal bough. These nests resembled that reported by Ihering. Usage of cup-shaped nests to establish phylogenetic relationships is limited by their simplicity and the lack of detailed descriptions

    LONGITUDINAL AND CYCLIC POLEWARD MIGRATION OF A SOUTH AMERICAN INTRATROPICAL MIGRANT FLYCATCHER, THE LESSER ELAENIA (ELAENIA CHIRIQUENSIS)

    Research on terrestrial migratory birds is incipient in Brazil. Geolocators have recently allowed tracking small migratory passerines, and such data combined with intrinsic markers such as stable isotopes has become invaluable in revealing migratory behavior. Here we used data from a long-term banding program in a Cerrado reserve in central Brazil where we also deployed geolocators to track adults of a 15g flycatcher, the Lesser Elaenia (Elaenia chiriquensis). The literature defines it as a resident or migrant that may overwinter in the Amazon or Central Brazil. Our general goals were to describe the breeding site fidelity of individuals, their migratory behavior and wintering grounds, thus assessing the migratory connectivity of the studied population. We tagged 40 birds in 2011-2012 and successfully extracted data for three recaptured individuals. We analyzed data using GeoLight and QGIS. Recapture data showed that individuals lived for at least 12yrs and that ~15% of all marked birds returned to a ~200 ± 185m radius from where it was recorded in a previous breeding season. Tracking data revealed low migratory connectivity of the studied population. One individual remained resident. The other two individuals migrated through distinct routes: one made a longitudinal northeast-southwest route and the other a cyclic migration consisting of a poleward section to south Brazil, a NW flight to the Pantanal surroundings and ending with a longitudinal NE spring migration. These are the first detailed data of the migratory movements of individual Lesser Elaenias, supporting its partial rather than obligatory migration in central Brazil. Moreover, we found that migrants overwintered in savanna-like areas, supporting previous studies. We included and discussed a list of hypotheses we expect to guide further studies on this and other intratropical migrant species, thus contributing to improving knowledge on this complex and understudied migratory system

    RECENT RECORDS OF HAWK-EAGLES (SPIZAETUS SPP.) IN NORTHWESTERN RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL

    I have reported in this paper several observations with three Spizaetus hawk-eagles in the northwestern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two records are described for S. tyrannus, including one recent and another historical. As for S. melanoleucus, I describe 30 records, including 10 showing territorial behavior (one with mating displays), three for juveniles, four for diet or hunting behavior and seven interactions with other species of raptors. Finally, 27 records are reported for S. ornatus, including four for territorial behavior, 10 of juvenile or immatures birds, five for diet or hunting behavior and three interactions with other species of raptors. In the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, S. tyrannus has recent observation only in Missões region, next to Ijuí River, while S. ornatus has recent records only in Turvo State Park. On the other hand, S. melanoleucus has been recent recorded in Turvo State Park, in Guarita Indigenous Land, in the Parizinho Corridor and in Entre-Ijuís, next to Ijuizinho River. Spizaetus hawk-eagles are regionally threatened and require attention to human disturbances, such as hunting, logging and habitat loss

    VOCAL ACTIVITY OF THE GREAT POTOO (NYCTIBIUS GRANDIS) IN RELATION TO MOONLIGHT: DETECTIONS IN COSTA RICA

    Variations in moonlight can affect the vocal activity of many nocturnal birds, including the Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis), a rarely seen bird usually detected through its characteristic calls. We evaluated the vocal activity of the Great Potoo in relation to moonlight in a Tropical Forest of Costa Rica. We surveyed potoos using four replicated 13-minute counts covering a single moon cycle at 31 points at La Selva Biological Station during March and April 2020. We detected seven Great Potoos on nights with 76-100% moonlight, three on nights with 51-75% moonlight, and none on nights with 0-50% moonlight. Great Potoos were more easily detected during moonlit nights, which is consistent with other studies of ‘lunarphilic’ nocturnal birds, and suggests that future studies modeling occupancy or habitat use of Great Potoos should consider moonlight as a covariate of detectability

    PHILOPATRY OF TWO WARBLERS IN JAMAICAN MANGROVES: COMPARING BANDING DATA OF A MIGRANT AND A RESIDENT SPECIES

    Between September 1999 and January 2002, banding was carried out at standardized mist net locations in extensive coastal mangroves at Two Sisters near Mitchell Town in the Portland Bight Protected Area, south-central Jamaica on 25 days as part of a base-line assessment of the avifauna. Captures included 427 birds of 31 species. There were 183 local recaptures and no international recaptures. Two Parulidae warbler species dominated, the Northern Waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis), a North American migrant that overwinters in Jamaica with 183 individuals banded of which 45 individuals (25%) were recaptured 71 times (mean = 1.6 times), and the resident subspecies of the Yellow Warbler (Dendroica petechia) with 45 individuals banded of which 21 individuals (47%) were recaptured 64 times (mean = 3.0 times). The data on phenology and philopatry within and between years were compared for the two species, and the differences between resident and migrant species are discussed

    BODY CONDITION OF BREEDING VERMILION FLYCATCHERS (PYROCEPHALUS RUBINUS) VARIES BETWEEN AREAS WITH AND WITHOUT CATTLE RANCHING IN CENTRAL ARGENTINA

    The body condition of birds may be conditioned by intrinsic (e.g., sex, age, migratory and breeding status) and extrinsic factors, such as anthropic activities (e.g., livestock raising). We describe the biometry and body condition of Vermilion Flycatchers (VEFL) according to sex and age and evaluate which factors best predict their body condition during the breeding season in the Espinal of central Argentina. The study area included “Parque Luro” Provincial Reserve and two nearby private ranches with livestock. We captured and banded VEFL using mist nets between October to February, from 2015 to 2019. We calculated the scaled mass indexes, which relates body mass to biometric measures (culmen, tarsus, and tail length, and wing chord) to choose the best indicator of body condition. As explanatory variables, we used the breeding condition of females in one model, breeding condition of males in another model, and in a final model we used date, year and site, and included all individuals. We banded 93 VEFL that did not vary according to age-dependent body size or reproductive condition. Nevertheless, females weighed more, had higher fat levels and shorter wings than males. The body condition was only explained by breeding site, being smaller in one ranch than the other ranch and the reserve. We highlight the importance of reserves and the need for further research to understand the ecological constraints that South American birds face, to promote their conservation

    MALOPHAGES IN CRYPTURELLUS NOCTIVAGUS AND CRYPTURELLUS OBSOLETUS (BIRDS: TINAMIDAE) IN THE PAMPA BIOME, SOUTHERN BRAZIL

    The current study aimed to identify malophages in a population of Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus noctivagus) and Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus obsoletus) in the Pampa Biome, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In 250 hours of sampling efforts, using bell-traps, we captured eleven specimens of C. n. noctivagus, and of these, two of them showed occurrence of feather lice. In C. o. obsoletus, four individuals were captured, and of these, three presented lice. In both tinamous, specimens of Strongylocotes complanatus and Heptapsogaster temporalis (Ischnocera, Philopteridae) were recorded. The frequency of occurrence (FO) of these ectoparasites in C. n. noctivagus was of 18,2%, and in C. o. obsoletus, 75%. We thus report in a descriptive manner additional information about the occurrence of these ectoparasites, associated with forest tinamous of the genus Crypturellus, in Southern Brazil

    FORAGING ECOLOGY OF PSITTACINES IN THE TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE

    Between May 2004 and April 2005 we observed 15 species of psittacines foraging along transects and during fortuitous encounters in the Tambopata National Reserve. Psittacines fed on 84 plant species from 62 genera and 30 families. We report 51 plant species as new food sources for psittacines in Southeastern Peru. The greatest foraging activity took place from 6:00 h to 7:00 h. The most consumed plant part was the seed (41% of 469 foraging encounters), followed by pulp (15%), whole fruit (13%), flower (12%), aril (10%), leaves (1.5%), bark (0.6%), floral buds (0.4%) and fruit juice (0.4%). We found no preference between ripe and unripe seed consumption (48% and 47% respectively), but other fruit parts were eaten mostly ripe (more than 67%)

    DISTRIBUTION OF THE TUMBES TYRANT (TUMBEZIA SALVINI) WITH COMMENTS ON MARGINAL RECORDS

    We report odd records in the southernmost range of the Tumbes Tyrant (Tumbezia salvini), a near-threatened species endemic of the Tumbesian region in Peru. We assessed whether these records could be considered geographically or ecologically marginal compared to the entire species distribution. By collecting occurrence records for the species and climatic information across its range and using multivariate analysis and species distribution models, we examined the position of the odd records across its geographical distribution and climatic niche, and its range dynamics in recent years. Our results show that the newly collected records are indeed found in geographically and climatically marginal situations.  In the recent years, the species has been reported to move upward at its upper range limit but not at its lower limit, which may suggest a relatively recent range expansion. However, sampling frequency of occurrence records also increased over time, which may imply a better recent detection of the species at both its geographical and environmental margins and therefore a possible misinterpretation of its recent past range dynamics. Finally, recent temperature trends do not indicate an overall warming in the region, which might discard the hypothesis that the odd records were due to a range shift caused by climate change. The dry forest in the Tumbesian region is under serious threat by human disturbance. Further appropriate monitoring of the Tumbes Tyrant across its range and ecological niche margins through time, will help evaluate its threat and subsequent conservation status
