Online Political Information, Public opinion and Political Activism - A Descriptive Analysis
The primary research interest is in the area of uses and users of online political information. Online Journalism aided by social networking sites, smartphones, fast mobile networks and visual communication apps are playing an increasingly important role in influencing the political opinion of the society. Unlike the conventional form of news dissemination by the traditional electronic media like the television or radio, the online news of information offers the users an option of immediate feedback or response to any news content thereby neutralizing the information from the source) and consolidating the information along with their own inputs. This feature of online journalism along with the technology, creative applications and extremely fast reach of news to a wide audience through mobile devices has added a new dimension to the political information available online. Such an increasing reach is making a demand for an in depth study of the users and uses of political information because misinformation and abuse of online resources can have serious consequences on our society. On the other hand, the heterogeneous nature of the users also plays an important role in their approach towards any information. The demographics and socioeconomic position of a user also might affect their news assimilation behaviour. This in turn shapes their reaction towards the news content which makes the dynamics of public opinion formation even more complex and thus makes the analysis of the users a must. Adding on to the issue is the affiliation of political parties to media houses which relay the news. This is significant because it might affect the credibility of the source in the minds of the users and also have a direct impact on their dependency of online political information on social networking sites and applications rather than the conventional media like television. Its impact on the user and public opinion also needs to be studied. Further, the form and style of political news online has changed from that of the traditional media. The content is presented in a more humorous, entertaining format along with catchy visuals and graphics, which might also be the reason for the deeper social penetration of such news content. Thus analyzing the reception and transmission of such information by the users is required. Investigating the Style, form, design of the online political news content, its impact on the users of various backgrounds and how it impacts the public opinion formation is the general goal of the research.

Social Media: Is it a Tool of Emancipation or a means for Harassment for Migrants?
Recent incidents of lynching and killing ‘outsiders’ under various mysterious circumstances has one thing common for digital media and migrants: social media is the thread weaving toxic rumours which hurt migrants, who are labelled with the term ‘outsiders.’ Sometimes it is refugees. Sometimes it is internally displaced-within a city or across states. But all their fate is no different. The Pew Research Center calls global migration as one of the most “significant demographic trend” happening today. As per United Nation’s International Migration Report 2017, international migration is on the rise. From 173 million in 2000, 220 million in 2010, it has gone up to 258 million in 2017. War and internal strife in the Middle East is the single largest contributor for the global trend. But the same applies to Asian and South East Asian countries where the perennial issues of Bangladeshi migration, Rohingya migration from Myanmar, Afghan refugee issues, Sri Lankan Tamils migration in making Asia as no exception. But nation states aren’t the single most issue for the migrant issue. Because, people migrating within a country are also persecuted as ‘outsiders.’ Is the social media building bridges or destroying them? With 20 crore Indians using WhatsApp on a daily basis, it is becoming a parallel medium of spreading messages for the masses. But Mooer’s Law put forth by Calvin Mooer’s in 1959 is proving to be true in the digital era. He proposed that, “An information retrieval system will tend not to be used whenever it is more painful and troublesome for a customer to have information than for him not to have it.” Roger Summit, founder, Dialogue Information Services reinterprets for the era of social media: “information will be used in direct proportion to how easy it is to obtain”. This provides the answer to why people tend to believe in rumours spread by WhatsApp, without checking the veracity. Why two migrant labourers were thrashed as child kidnappers in Chennai? Why a migrant labourer from Uttar Pradesh was lynched in Tripura, suspecting her of child lifting? Since 10 May 2018 there have been 20 incidents of lynch killings, all motivated by rumours spread through social media. At the same time mobile devices act as a tool of communication and culture for migrants. Chandrahasan, Founder and Chairman of OfERR, an organisation working for rehabilitation of Sri Lankan refugees in their homeland says that social media plays a key role in uniting refugee children who were born and brought up in Tamil Nadu, without having a glimpse of their native land. “Their WhatsApp video calls showing lush greenery of the Sri Lanka is one of the key pushing points in re-integration with their home land” he says. The boom in mobile connectivity is bridging the gap between the migrants and their loved ones especially since 97% of migrants are men leaving behind their family in their homeland in search of better earning. The paper looks at how digital media and specifically social media could be a tool for emancipation at the same time a tool for harassment.

Data Journalism in the Age of RTI
With the rise of democracy, the modern governments have slowly started opening themselves to the idea of open governance, i.e., a transparent and accountable governance. Several legislative patterns around the world are the proof of this paradigm. The Indian government after some amount of reluctance dipped its toes with the introduction of the Right to Information Act, 2005. This has added a new requirement to the journalist’s profession – Data Crunching. After slowly understanding the plethora of stories hidden underneath these data, the Journalists have started hunting for data that they can use in their stories. Other than this, RTI has also paved way for the media organizations to serve the public interest better with data journalism. However, the data journalism comes with a huge barrier – the lack of familiarity about how to work with the data and the dearth of computing skills are the foremost of them. This paper tries to understand the possible paradigms and viability of data journalism in the Indian Journalism
