"The educational system must make its contribution to the development of habits, attitudes and qualities of charter, which will enable its citizens to bear worthily the responsibilities of democratic citizenship and to face all those fissiparous tendencies which hinder the emergence of a broad, national and secular outlook". The Report of the Education Commission (1964-66) in evolving the educational system, identified the "social and national integration" as one of the major problems of national development and called for different means through which these themes can be taught in schools and colleges. The National Policy on Education 1986 points out the need for establishing the national system of education and institutions to promote national integration and different components of the Constitution. In 1999, a committee was set up under the Chairmanship of Justice J. S. Verma to implement the suggestions to teach Fundamental Duties to the Citizens of the country. The report popularly known as Justice J.S. Verma Committee Report provides conceptual definition of "Duty", Preamble of the Constitution and all the Fundamental Duties. The Reports lists out the Schemes/Programs related to National Integration and Communal Harmony, culture and Values and Environment. The report also contains an analysis of curriculum at various levels of education and teacher education from the point of view of various Fundamental Duties including National Integration and Communal Harmony. Consumers’ Behavior toward Modern and Traditional Shops: A Study in Thane City

    No full text
The retail industry in India has been rapidly changing. Newer formats of retail shops have become available to consumers who now have a wide variety of choices from where they can shop. With the availability of modern retail shops, consumers’ spends are now fragmented and are spread over different types of retail shops. Where earlier consumers’ monthly grocery shopping would have been done at a local kirana/ semi-wholesaler, i.e., traditional retailers, now that spend is split over both modern and traditional retailers. Consumer spending on grocery does not increase exponentially with an increase in their incomes. In areas where modern retail formats are present, consumers are now purchasing from both types of formats. Thus, modern retailers are making inroads and grabbing the share of pie of traditional retailers in terms of consumers’ spends. This article attempts to study consumers’ behavior toward both modern and traditional shops in order to identify areas of consumers’ decision making in terms of expenditures on grocery, fruits and vegetables, the purchase of non-perishable grocery items, payment methods, and linking grocery with non-grocery purchases. With such an increase in competition and choices of retail formats available, retailers have to improve their offerings, services, and conveniences to consumers in order to win their continued patronage. Based on economic parameters of low, medium, and high-income groups, a sample of 559 respondents was drawn from Thane city; the unit of study was not individuals but the households. Survey research was chosen as the method for collection of data. Statistically, the extent of association and or variation between independent and dependent variables, of the data collected, was studied.

There arises the need to study the phenomenon in capital market of Pakistan and empirically investigate the relationship of behavioral biases like overconfidence and disposition effect with the trading volume. The quantitative research methodology is used. The data has been collected through secondary sources over 2005-2015 and the Vector Auto Regression is applied. The findings reveal disposition effect has positive significant relationship, yet overconfidence has significant but negative relationship with trading volume in Pakistan Stock Market. The article focuses on the relationship of overconfidence and disposition effect collectively. The study concluded that Pakistan Stock Market does not support EMH and CAPM since the market is inefficient and hold weak flow of information on the economic activity. Therefore, investors relate behavioral heuristics to make their investment decisions, which is an irrational approach.

The Role of Media in Pre-cyclone Preparedness and Post-cyclone Recovery in South Odisha: An Exploratory Study

    No full text
In 2013, when India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the arrival of super cyclone Phailin that was to make its landfall at Gopalpur, Southern Odisha, the state began preparations with the target of achieving zero casualties. Since the alert was given well ahead of time, it perhaps helped save many lives since the state government took immediate steps to evacuate and make necessary arrangements to scale down the magnitude of the damage caused by the super cyclone. Approximately 900,000 residents were evacuated to shelters in schools, colleges, universities and government offices. Authorities also moved food, water and medicines close to the affected areas before the storm. Phailin being the strongest tropical storm to hit Odisha in more than a decade, such preparedness immensely contributed in bringing down the number of casualties in 2013 as compared to that of the last super cyclone which hit coastal Odisha in 1999, leaving 10,000 people dead and causing huge loss to property. After the super cyclone Phailin, the author conducted a post-disaster study to find out how the natural disaster affected the residents who were directly impacted. The survey was then reviewed to determine the usefulness and role of media during such an event. The author also studied the media’s role in helping the residents in pre-disaster preparedness and post-disaster recovery, which perhaps helped reduce the devastation and destruction that cyclone Phailin could have otherwise caused. Odisha in the past has faced severe cyclones time and again that caused huge loss to life and property. Loss of life during Phailin in 2013 was contained to a single digit figure for which the Odisha administration earned praise throughout the world. The author also stresses upon the importance of establishing an effective relationship between government and non-government disaster mitigation groups and the scientific community with the media to increase the ability to reduce risk during such disasters.

“Public relations is a distinctive management function which helps establish and maintain mutual lines of communication, understanding, acceptance and cooperation between an organization and its publics; involves the management of problems or issues; helps management to keep informed and responsive to public opinion; defines and emphasizes the responsibility of management to serve the public interest; helps management to keeps abreast of and effectively utilize change, serving as an early warning system to anticipate trends; and uses research and sound and ethical communication techniques as its principal tools”-(Dr. R. F. Harlow, a Social Scientist, in 1976). In a path-breaking study, Rayn (1987) identified four internal constraints faced by public relations functionaries. In subsequent replication studies of Indian public sector organizations, Mathur (1996, 1999) while retaining the four broad constraints, slightly modified the 20-item instrument to suit Indian conditions. This study too uses Mathur’s (1999) instrument with the objective of eliciting a more dynamic response to the 20 questions distributed in four internal constraints. This relates to pursuing the second objective of the study
