This research investigates the stock price reaction to the bonus issue announcement in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. The study pursues standard event methodology in which data on 73 bonus announcements from 13 different sectors constitute the basic inputs for analysis. The findings reveal the positive market reaction on ex-bonus day and the same immediately fades off after that. The analysis finds statistically insignificant abnormal returns on and around the bonus issue announcement dates which challenge the signaling hypothesis for India. However, the research cannot offer any conclusive evidence on the semi-strong efficiency of financial markets in India. Keywords: Bonus Shares, EMH, Event Study, Overreaction, T-testHow to cite this article: Saji TG.
