Evolution of Marketing Communication in the Digital Age

    No full text
The Digital Age is one of the disruptive forces that is changing the way business is done in the 21st C. Marketing strategies have undergone major changes on account of digital technology. Companies are using the web not only for communicating with current and potential customers both within the country as well as abroad, but also for establishing a two-way communication with them. Businesses are not only putting up advertisements on the web that can potentially be accessed by anyone with a laptop or even a smartphone having the necessary software, but are also creating virtual showrooms with interactive features that can provide the potential customer with the required precise details. The digital revolution has thus shaken marketing strategies to the core, leading to a paradigm shift in marketing communication that involves a two-way information flow as against the traditional model that comprised of a one-way information flow, where all customers were bombarded with a pre-set marketing communication, without any heed to their individual preferences. It is also offering greater price transparency; customers often are today dictating the price. We consequently have the emergence of ‘cyberconsumers’.India is the third-biggest country in terms of internet users in the world, with a highly social and mobile audience. With better connections, mobile phones and computers, Indians are increasingly using the internet for more than just checking their email. This net-savvy generation is also helping to build e-commerce in India. The number of transactions made online has been growing: in the past year, the value of online business in India was estimated to be worth about $10 bn. Online advertising has been growing in India. On an average, the digital ad spends have been growing at 25% year-on-year basis. It is found that when companies create engaging interactions via digital channels, there is a significant impact on growth, revenue and brand advocacy. The web provides a two way communication, thereby making the communication with customers mutual. In the digital world, marketers are able to consider their customers individually, customize their services and products, and establish a dialogue with the customers rather than talk at them. Thanks to the digital technology, the consumer is now an active participant and a partner in the production. Emotions are therefore being utilized in company’s digital strategy for digital channel relationships with customers. This minimizes the importance of the middleman, and the company can pass on the cost saving to the customers. The mobile internet and social media have created new digital channels between a company and its customers known as “digital channels”.8 Customers today are not just downloading or searching for static data, but engage, upload and share their own content to a wider online network.Further companies can now increase the time of business on a global spectrum. Today, a consumer relies on a wide and shifting range of options on account of digital interactions, and remains engaged with the brand through social media after purchasing it..Customer feedback certainly influences decisions taken about product offerings, and promotional campaigns are enhanced on the basis of this feedback and use of the latest technology available. Today it is therefore imperative for an astute marketer to gain acceptance and become a part of social and cultural life. The paper seeks to explore and analyze the marketing communication strategies that are being adopted in the digital age

    No full text
Bitumen deposits occur in various parts of the world and in some localities in Nigeria. The bitumen seepages have been used locally for roads but were never exploited on a commercial scale. This study focuses on the determination of the chemical constituents of bitumen samples and the associated tar sands from Agbabu, Ondo state. Ten samples were collected at various locations in Agbabu and its environs and subjected to chemical analysis. The results revealed the ranges of the chemical constituents in the tar sands as follows: SiO2 (54.80 – 56.40%wt), Al2O3 (28.90 – 31.47), Fe2O3 (4.55 – 4.98), MnO (0.07 - 0.08), MgO (4.29 – 4.75), CaO (1.60 – 1.78), Na2O (0.82 - 0.92), K2O (0.85- 0.98) and TiO2 (1.13 - 1.24), all in %wt. The mean compositional values of the trace elements are: Zn (259.2ppm), Cu (28.09ppm), Cr (112.42ppm), Rb (226.20ppm), Ni (29.39ppm), Ba (745.79ppm), Ga (25.25ppm), Ce (17.81ppm) and Sr (226.2ppm). The mean value of elemental composition of the bitumen samples from the study area shows that the percentage weight of carbon(C) is 83.58%, hydrogen (H) is 10.39%, sulphur (S) is 0.52%, nitrogen (N) is 0.89% and oxygen (O) is 2.56%. The chemical analysis results of the tar sand from the study area are averagely consistent as compared to other localities and areas. The results confirmed that the samples analyzed are rich in silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3). The bitumen deposit from the study area will be a good binder for construction industry if appropriately modified. The Agbabu bitumen sample is low in sulphur and this influences its uses as road pavement materials. The concentration level of chromium and nickel in the bitumen samples will pose environmental hazard in the study area. The differences in geological and geographical locations of the deposits are responsible for the heterogenous nature of the sample. Agbabu bitumen ranks amongst the best major bitumen deposits of the world. Keywords: Bitumen, Elements, Hydrocarbon, Metasedimentary, Oxides, Tar sandHow to cite this article: Ayodele CO, Nenuwa OB, Fakolade OR. Corporate social responsibility research has so far focused on big businesses. The Supreme Court of India (TOI 13.09.2013) has declared that giving employee benefits does not amount to CSR. Yet, research findings involving large organisations are not wholly transferable to small ones, mainly because SMEs operate under conditions that are different from large ones. This research is intended to address this imbalance. This paper seeks to identify and analyze the philosophy behind Maharashtra based small and medium enterprises engagement in socially responsible activities and to identify the benefits observed and perceived by the SMEs engaged in socially responsible practices. It also helps us to investigate how socially responsible activities lead to sustainable development. Using structured questions face-to-face interviews are conducted with the owner managers of small and medium sized enterprises in Maharashtra. The most important aspect this study reveals is whether these small businesses are voluntarily doing socially responsible activities or they are engaged in philanthropy to be popular and just avoid mishaps. It raises the question whether enterprises are engaged in socially responsible activities as a matter of legal compliance, as a part of social obligation or as a part of their business strategy.

Mirroring the Perceptions: Escapism in Imtiaz Ali’s Cinema

Indian commercial cinema over the ages has been infamous for taking the escapist route. For the dream sequences, larger than life characters, happy endings et al. For its justification, it portrays the dreams, aspirations and ambitions of the masses on the screen. But the song and drama and the dance sequences depict life as it should be, atleast in retrospective, and not as it is. On the other hand, reality also finds a depiction in a niche, limited to the fringes of the mainstream cinema, referred to popularly as the art-house or parallel cinema. But the mainstream industry still sells the highly plastered format. Glossed and gleamed over. Enter a new generation of film makers, trying to build bridges between the parallel and mainstream. One of the new breed, Imtiaz Ali, a film maker of the same generation, trys to take the varnish off the films, like many along with him. He picks up characters with flaws, imperfections and vices. His protagonist is not almighty and neither is his heroine the prettiest swan in the lake, thus mirroring the youth in the looking glass of his films. Soon he is credited to be one of the popular hindi film makers who can touch the raw and throbbing nerve of the younger generation. He is touted to be balancing both the arms of cinema, parallel and commercial, by many. This paper proposes to find out if Ali is redefining the escapism infamous with hindi cinema or is he actually escaping from it? Does his narrative style transgress into Marshall McLuhan’s ‘Medium is the Message’ or does he restructure the aspirations according to the present generation? His films have been picked up as case studies and studied under a quantified tabular format to reach a conclusion.
