On November 8, 2016, night, in an unusual televised address to the nation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprisingly announced the demonetization of `500 and `1000 currency notes in order to check on black money. This is one of the historical steps ever taken by an Indian Prime Minister. The banknotes that were declared illegal tender represent more than 86% of cash in circulation in India. Since then, the entire nation is suffering from a financial hurricane. This currency demonetization has taken a lot of attention from the citizens of India, politicians, media and research community as well. The incidence of fake Indian currency notes in higher denomination has been increasing since the last few decades. For ordinary citizens, the fake notes look similar to genuine notes issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These fake Indian currency notes are used for anti-national and illegal activities. High denomination notes like `500 and `1000 banknotes have been misused by terrorists and for hoarding black money

    No full text
Corporate social responsibility research has so far focused on big businesses. The Supreme Court of India (TOI 13.09.2013) has declared that giving employee benefits does not amount to CSR. Yet, research findings involving large organizations are not wholly transferable to small ones, mainly because SMEs operate under conditions that are different from large ones. This research is intended to address this imbalance. This article seeks to identify and analyze the philosophy behind Maharashtra based small and medium enterprises engagement in socially responsible activities and to identify the benefits observed and perceived by the SMEs engaged in socially responsible practices. It also helps us to investigate how socially responsible activities lead to sustainable development. Using structured questions, face-to-face interviews are conducted with the owner managers of small and medium sized enterprises in Maharashtra. The most important aspect this study reveals is whether these small businesses are voluntarily doing socially responsible activities or they are engaged in philanthropy to be popular and just avoid mishaps. It raises the question whether enterprises are engaged in socially responsible activities as a matter of legal compliance, as a part of social obligation or as a part of their business strategy

The Exxon-Mobil merger was well known. But the merger has to overcome many critical problems. Although the merger involved American companies, unlike the Daimler- Chrysler merger, considerable differences in culture and work style had to be dealt with. Exxon was known for its conservative culture, whereas Mobil was known for its bold and robust culture. This difference in culture was reflected in their corporate symbols. Exxon’s symbol was a stalking tiger whereas Mobil’s symbol was a flying horse. The tiger represented Exxon’s conservative approach whereas the flying horse represented Mobil’s open and transparent culture. At Exxon even the smallest thing was planned and executed carefully, whereas at Mobil new ideas and risk taking were always encouraged. Exxon took a lot of time to take decisions, because of bureaucratic structure, whereas at Mobil even risky decisions were taken quickly.
