Navigating the Storm: Addressing Youth Mental Health in New York State Public High Schools
No full textThe United States is experiencing a mental health crisis among its youth. This crisis is, characterized by rising suicide rates, persistent sadness, and increased psychiatric visits. Comorbid conditions further complicate this crisis. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study explores challenges faced by high school counselors and social workers. According to Bitsko et al. (2022), 88% of schools lack confidence in their capacity to provide sufficient mental health services. Key findings highlight substantial gaps in mental health service delivery, including overwhelming caseloads and insufficient resources, which impede the effectiveness of interventions.
The study recommends increasing staff diversity, ensuring equitable resource distribution, integrating more mental health professionals, forging stronger external partnerships, and building trust with parents and communities to improve service outcomes for students. The research highlights the critical need for increased mental health support and resources in public high schools. It also highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of collaboration with local agencies, and the necessity for comprehensive training and advocacy to effectively address the growing mental health needs of students
Implementation of a New Graduate Registered Nurse Mentorship Program: A Quality Improvement Project
No full textTransitioning from student to a registered nurse is a critical period for new graduates, often marked by challenges affecting confidence and job satisfaction. Mentorship programs have been identified as an effective intervention to support new nurses during this transition. The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) offers a structured mentoring program that can be leveraged to enhance the confidence level and job satisfaction of new graduate registered nurses.
This quality improvement project aims to implement a new graduate registered nurse mentorship program at a \u3e 400-bed community hospital. This program will incorporate components of the established Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses mentoring program, specifically into a 12-week format. The goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of this integrated approach in supporting new nurses and improving their confidence and job satisfaction.
New graduate registered nurses (mentees) and nurse educators or clinical resource nurses (mentors) participated in the new graduate registered nurse mentoring program for over 12 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted with mentees to measure confidence and job satisfaction. A program satisfaction survey was completed by all participants.
Implementing structured mentorship programs such as the AMSN Mentoring Program may be a sustainable strategy for healthcare organizations to support new nurses and improve job satisfaction and clinical confidence. The findings from this project may inform the best practices for mentorship programs and provide a model that may be replicated in other healthcare settings
Reassessing customer discrimination in local market National Basketball Association television viewership
No full textThis study revisits the question of whether evidence of race-based customer discrimination exists in local market television viewership. We assess how consumers in 27 of the largest U.S. media markets respond to the racial composition of playing talent using modern local market television viewership data from the National Basketball Association. An advantage of using viewership data from this context is the ability to control for the perceived and actual quality of the product, allowing for the ability to isolate the effects of player race. We first uncover statistically significant increases in viewership when Non-White players occupy more roster spots and receive more playing time relative to White players. Individual player race models produce similar results and indicate consumers respond favourably to Black and Hispanic players. The results oppose previous research in the same setting and suggest viewership preferences related to race have changed substantially over time

No full textThis article uses the history of the early U.S. case definition of AIDS to question the imperatives in the newly developed Long-COVID (LC) definition. Doing so allows us to think through the role of case definitions in producing meaning in our world and to consider what we can learn about the politics of knowledge creation. By examining the porous boundaries of identity, institutions, and AIDS and placing this history in relation to LC, I argue that the state is doing more than describing and diagnosing these institutional practices, but that hybrid identities are produced by the state through these practices like naming and defining. Comparing these two events in public health reveals the state to be a primary—perhaps the primary—agent in elaborating the contours of identity through disease. I employ an analytic framework based on the institutionalization of “identity stories” established by political scientist Clarissa Rile Hayward to argue that the case definition is a central site where knowledge about disease and identity is built into the structure of political institutions. Identifying how this process happens within institutions provides important political lessons for our current moment and offers opportunities for resistance to health inequities
