Assessment of Adult Diabetes Management in Roatan, Honduras: A Multiyear Descriptive Study

    No full text
Diabetes remains a significant public health concern in Roatan, Honduras, where healthcare systems are less accessible, underfunded, and have limited resources compared to the United States. The American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) guidelines emphasize comprehensive diabetes management, including regular blood glucose monitoring, diet, exercise, and medication adherence. In a similar study conducted in 2018, data collected in Roatan, Honduras assessed the treatment and diabetes management of patients in that region. This study aims to reassess the current state of adult diabetes management and identify ongoing challenges associated with adherence to current ADA standards

This art piece was inspired by presentation topics and visuals, themes, and patterns on clothing worn by the presenters. Our Experiences reflects the time and effort women of color put into our careers and personal lives. It represents the hardship and heartbreak that can come from our responsibilities, and the beauty of strength, resilience and community. Mixed media: cut paper, acrylic marker, gold ink

Anti-Racist Practices are Always the Answer: Fixing the Gap in Literacy Instruction for Black and Brown Students

    No full text
Disparities among Black and White students in reading proficiency are stark. Specifically, these disparities can be seen by comparing the average test scores of RCSD, a racially segregated public school district, and that of all of New York State. This disparity is hugely important because literacy skills are the cornerstone of education. Along with literacy being necessary in the field of education, it is essential in the fields of communication and neuroscience. A potential solution to this problem is by integrating multiple dialects of English into English classrooms, namely African American Vernacular English [AAVE] and other dialects that students speak at home. A major tenet of the inclusion of multiple dialects of English is teaching without the assumption that English is standard. Creating a linguistically diverse English classroom will improve literacy among all students, not just those of color

Exploring the Relationship Between Job Satisfaction and Servant Leadership in Community Corrections: A Probation Officer’s Perspective

    No full text
Probation officers work in demanding environments marked by high caseloads, role conflict, and organizational pressures that can negatively affect job satisfaction and workforce stability. Leadership practices at the frontline supervisory level play a critical role in shaping these experiences, yet limited empirical research has examined servant leadership within community corrections. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between probation officers’ perceptions of servant leadership demonstrated by their direct supervisors and their level of job satisfaction. Data were collected from probation officers affiliated with departments connected to the American Probation and Parole Association using an anonymous online survey administered through Qualtrics. The study employed validated measures of servant leadership and job satisfaction. Descriptive statistics were used to assess levels of perceived servant leadership and job satisfaction, and Spearman correlation analyses with bootstrap confidence intervals were conducted to examine the relationship between these variables. The results indicate a statistically significant positive relationship between perceived servant leadership and overall job satisfaction, with particularly strong associations related to satisfaction with supervision. These findings suggest that ethical, supportive, and empowering leadership behaviors at the frontline supervisory level are meaningfully associated with probation officers’ work experiences. The study highlights the practical implications of leadership practices as a modifiable factor that may support workforce engagement and stability in community corrections. Recommendations include incorporating servant leadership principles into supervisor training and leadership development initiatives, and conducting future research to further examine leadership practices that support probation officers’ well-being and organizational effectiveness in probation settings

Kinetics of Carboxylic Acid Enolization on Metal Oxides in Vapor Phase

    No full text
An invisible, reversible catalytic reaction called enolization occurs consistently when carboxylic acid vapors contact metal oxide surfaces, a pathway widely invoked in mechanistic proposals for decarboxylative ketonization but not sufficiently examined experimentally. While the CO₂H group responsible for adsorption readily forms surface carboxylates, the weaker α-C–H acidity becomes evident only through reversible H/D exchange. The formation of an enolized surface carboxylate enables its subsequent condensation with a second carboxylate, a transformation widely regarded as the rate-determining step in the decarboxylative ketonization mechanism relevant to oxygen removal in biofuel upgrading. In our kinetic study, the rate of approaching equilibrium was measured for H/D isotopic exchange on alpha-carbon of isobutyric acid used in various concentrations in a vapor phase mixture with D2O as well as for reversed D/H exchange between alpha-deuterated isobutyric acid and H2O upon contact with monoclinic zirconia and anatase titania catalysts. Faster rate for H/D vs. D/H exchange points to alpha-deprotonation, i.e., enolization, as the rate determining step of the exchange mechanism. The intrinsic rate of enolization was deduced using McKay equation for equilibrium reactions. Kinetic activation parameters were obtained through temperature dependence of the rate constant for both exchange directions, H/D and D/H. KOH doping on ZrO2 changes the geometry of the transition state leading to higher rates of enolization and increasing H/D kinetic isotope effect from 1.4 to 5.8. The opposite effect of KOH doping is observed on anatase TiO2 – enolization rates are slightly decreased, kH/kD remains relatively constant at 2.6–2.8 indicating that the nature of basic centers on TiO2 is unaffected. These results confirm C–C coupling, not enolization, being the rate limiting step of the decarboxylative ketonization mechanism

    An Aging Workforce Case Study

My presentation is a contract for my Staffing Human Resource Course. It regards a business called General Appliance and discusses a company facing the problem of technological advances while maintaining an aging workforce. Employee retention, HR planning, legal compliance, internal and external recruitment, employee benefits, organization culture, and measurement testing are among the topics discussed in this presentation. This presentation will be conducted in class on April 8th and allow my peers to grasp a real-world business issue and how it should be handled, while connecting to class HR topics. The primary audience is my class peers and professor

Te Plasticity of President Barbie Colorblind Erasure and Misogynoir in Representational Diversity

    No full text
In lieu of an abstract here is the first paragraph: When Greta Gerwig’s Barbie took the world by storm in the summer of 2023, pink-tinted empowerment simultaneously thrilled and angered international audiences. Moviegoers around the globe clamored to theaters, often dressed in Barbie-inspired garb, to see how Gerwig would tackle the behemoth that is translating the sixty-year-old doll’s legacy to the big screen. Grossing over $1.38 billion at the global box office, the film is considered a feminist triumph, not only for its female director but also for millions of women around the world who felt represented on the big screen (Euronews, 2023). Gerwig’s decision to hire a diverse cast that included women of different races, ethnicities, sexualities, abilities, and gender expressions seemed like a feminist victory. However, the film\u27s reliance on a baseline understanding of feminist politics (i.e., “Feminism 101”) resulted in the centering of white femininity and capitalist-tinged visions of empowerment
