POPULATION SIZE OF TWO ENDANGERED VIREYA RHODODENDRON SPECIES AND THEIR SURROUNDING VEGETATION ON THE TOP OF THE MT. RANTEMARIO, SULAWESI
Five of the 29 species of Rhododendron of Sulawesi are threatened and two of which have endangered category (EN D). Field assessment had been conducted to measure the current population size of the endangered R. eymae and R. nanophyton var. nanophyton. One hundred and fortyplots (of each 5x5 m2) along seven transects were established around the summit of Mt. Rantemario (3,269–3,445 m asl.), South Sulawesi. The results showed that there were 318 individuals of R. eymae and two individuals of R. nanophyton var. nanophyton within the plots. We also found that the estimated population sizes of those two species have not met the criteria previously stated (EN D). The appropriated status for both species is Vulnerable (VU D2). The reasons for proposing this new category are discussed. The dominated shrubs and herbs on the summit area of Mt. Rantemario were Leptospermum javanica (IVI=37.08), Eriocaulon truncatum (IVI=34.83), and Styphelia suaveolens (IVI=24.63). The association of those three plants with the Rhododendron’s were analysed
ORGANOGENESIS TUNAS SECARA LANGSUNG PADA PAMELO (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.)
In vitro conservation of pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.) would need shoot as explant, because it makes easier in recovery and uses after conservation. Two experiments were conducted to find out an effective method to induce pummelo shoot directly. Leaf, root and epicotyls from in vitro germination of “Adas Duku” pummelo seeds were used as explants in separate experiments. First experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, using medium combination of MS + BAP (0; 1; 2 ppm) + NAA (0; 0.5; 1 ppm) as treatments. Second experiment was conducted to study the effect of epicotyl explant position in culture to the shoot emergence. The result showed that leaf, root and epicotyl could produce direct shoot organogenesis. Leaf explant (5.5%) produced 1 shoot/explant in MS + BAP 1 ppm in the dark room. Root explant (60%) produced 1 shoot/explant in MS0 in the light room. Epicotyl explant cultured horizontally (30%) produced 1–2 shoot/explants in MS0 in the light room, while in the dark room it produced etiolated shoot in MS0 and MS + BAP 1 ppm. Epicotyl explant cultured vertically in light condition produced 1–3 shoot/explants (100%)
PENINGKATAN PRODUKSI DAN PERBAIKAN UKURAN UMBI KENTANG HITAM (Plectranthus rotundifolius (Poir.) Spreng) MELALUI TEKNIK BUDIDAYA SEBAGAI UPAYA KONSERVASI
A decrease of the role of a species in the society culture can lead to scarcity and even the extinction of that species. Along with the government program to diversify food, it can be repopularized the underutilized carbohydrate source potential plants with the aim as the plant conservation efforts. Related to this, the hausa potato (Plectranthus rotundifolius) can be an alternative food source for the people who occupy arid areas. Hausa potatoes not only serve as a carbohydrate source with low glycemic index, but also rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Information on cultivation techniques become important things that need to be prepared within the framework of development. The study was conducted to answer questions regarding cultivation techniques that need to be done to improve the quality of the hausa potato crop in the market. The study was designed based on a randomized block design (RCBD) two factors, four hausa potato accessions and four types of cultivation techniques (four hausa potato accessions: Nganjuk, Sangian, clone 6G and O3; and four types of cultivation techniques: stockpilling, prunning, mulce, and lifting). Every treatment consist of four replications with three plants/replications. Observations were made on growth and yield parameters. The results showed that the different hausa potatoes accession need different cultivation techniques to improve the yield and tuber size. The use of rice straw mulch on hausa potato cultivation can improve the size of hausa potato tubers in the rainy season
CHARACTERIZATION OF A NEW BIOTYPE Moringa OF SAUDI ARABIA USING RAPD AND ISSR MARKERS
Moringa peregrina and M. oleifera are the only Moringa (Kelor) species found in Saudi Arabia. Both species are drought resistant and have very high nutritional and medicinal properties. Detection of genetic diversity is of great value for the improvement of nutritional and medicinal value of these plants. The aim of the present
study was to characterize a new biotype Moringa observed in Al Bahah Region, Saudi Arabia. We used 11 RAPD and 15 ISSR primers to characterize and compare the new biotype with M. peregrina and M. oleifera. Level of polymorphism generated by each marker was calculated. We also calculate Nei’s coefficient to measure the genetic distance between the studied species. Level of polymorphism generated by RAPD and ISSR was 59.7% and 75%, respectively. RAPD and ISSR primers revealed that the new biotype shared 53 amplicons (43.44%) with both M. peregrina and M. oleifera, 29 amplicons with M. peregrina (2377%), 22 amplicons (18.03%) with M. oleifera, and displayed 18 unshared amplicons (14.75%). Based on RAPD data, genetic distance between M. oleifera and M. peregrina was 0.59, whereas genetic distance between the new biotype and M. oleifera and M. peregrina was 0.41 and 0.54, respectively. For ISSR data, genetic distance between M. oleifera and M. peregrina was 0.98, whereas genetic distance between the new biotype and M. oleifera and M. peregrina was 0.59 and 0.56, respectively
FLUSHING PADA Amherstia nobilis Wall. DAN Brownea capitella Jacq. DI KEBUN RAYA BOGOR
Phenology is a study on periodicity sightings of plants in relation to climates, such as flowering time and flushing. Flushing means the growth of shoots/ flush simultaneously. This study aims to observe the shoots and leaves growth in response to light intensity under the difference of growing positions and environmental factors. This study used purposive sampling as a descriptive method. The growing positions of flush were on terminal and axillary of the plant, both in exposed and shaded conditions. The growth pace speeds of Amherstia nobilis Wall. and Brownea capitella Jacq. in exposed condition were faster than shaded condition. The rate of growth was accompanied by a change of color. The changing color of A. nobilis leaves were faster for two months than B. capitella. This study showed that light intensity and growing positions of the plants (terminal and axillary) influenced the growth of both species
KRITERIA PENENTUAN SPESIES PRIORITAS Rhododendron spp. TERANCAM KEPUNAHAN UNTUK DIKONSERVASI SECARA EX SITU DI INDONESIA
There are some limitation on achieving ex situ conservation goals such as time, budget, human resources, and policies. A process on the selection of species or location become a problematical course, especially when planning a botanical expedition. This is because we should consider several factors such as conservation status, budget, information, and risk of grow success. In this paper, a simple set of decision frame to prioritize what plant species to conserve on ex situ collection will be discussed. Thirty species of native threatened Rhododendron were scored using 11 criteria, which are conservation status, success story of ex situ introduction, representation of unique taxon, habitat status on biodiversity hot spot, habitat status on global 200 ecoregion, in situ conservation, growth form, habitat elevation, distance between wild habitat and ex situ habitat, number of sympatric congeneric threatened species, and collecting cost. An interpretation of total score judged by the ranking system. Based on these methods, three species of Indonesia native Rhododendron such as R. longiflorum var. bancanum, R. wilhelminae, and R. album become a top priority for ex situ conservation in Cibodas Botanic Garden
POTENSI BIOMASSA DAN CADANGAN KARBON KEBUN RAYA BALIKPAPAN, KALIMANTAN TIMUR
Balikpapan Botanic Garden has 309.22 hectare, within the 10,000 hectare Wain River forest conservation area, in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. One of the roles of the Botanic Garden is as a provider of environmental services. This encompasses contributing to effort in reducing global warming by producing biomass and storing carbon reserves. The aims of the research were to estimate the magnitude of the biomass and carbon stocks in the Balikpapan Botanic Garden as well as to determine the percentage contribution of forest components make to the carbon stock. Primary data was collected from the Botanic Garden precincts using a combination of transects and quadrat plots deploying a purposive sampling procedure. From each sampling unit, data wassystematically collected for living trees, necromass (mass of dead timber), ground cover, litter and soil. A nondestructive method was used to estimate the potential biomass and carbon of the living trees whereas a destructive determination of biomass was used for ground cover and litter. The Balikpapan Botanic Garden plays a major role in conserving biomass and carbon stocks. The average biomass and carbon stock determined across sampling sites in the Balikpapan Botanic Garden was 203 ton/ha and 142 ton/ha, respectively. The total amount of biomass and carbon held in the Garden was estimated at 58,990 ton and 41,050 ton, respectively.
