Functional Literacy: Analysis of Literacy Practices of Female Attendants in Pakistani Context
William S.Gray (1956) initially defined the term functional literacy for UNESCO. He associated it with the approaches which also covers the successful acquisition of verb, cognitive and computational skills to fulfill not only the practical ends but also the culturally specific ways. So, A person is functionally literate who can engage in all those activities in which literacy is required for effective functioning of his group and community, and also for enabling him to continue reading, writing and calculating for his own and the community development. (A.M.Thomas, 1983).Functional literacy includes the possession of skills perceived as necessary by a particular individual or group to fulfill their self-determined objective as a family or community member, citizen, consumer, job-holder, or member of religious, social or other associations of their choosing (Haramn, 1984).Self-perceived need and self-determined objectives forms the basis of learning. The reason to review functional literacy through literacy practices of female attendants is that usually attendants are assumed to be devoid of formal education hence apparently lacking in skills (functional literacy) but the ground reality is they perform tasks which involves linguistic competence. So, the current study is an attempt to review the concept of functional literacy and functional literacy competence by analyzing specific literacy practices of female attendants at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi (FJWU). A qualitative approach was used to evaluate and analyses the literacy practices of female attendants. Population of the study comprised of five female attendants at FJWU chosen through random sampling method. Data was collected through semi structured interviews to probe deep in the literacy practices of female attendants. Findings of the study revealed that the literacy practices (dispatching documents, presenting refreshment, receiving keys etc.) of female attendants at FJWU are culture specific and performed through functional skills (verbal, cognitive and computational) by practitioner\u27s self-determined objects (support family, perform the task accurately, get HODs approval, job benefits) formulated under practitioner\u27s perception (precision and accuracy will result in reward). The study would pave the way for adult education policy makers to comprehend the literary practices of working adults and accordingly to design courses and policies to enhance their capabilities which would ultimately increase their productivity

Petrology of Sirdan volcanic rocks in Alborz Mountains, northern Iran
The study area is located around Sirdan town in Sofla-Tarum Mountains in Alborz, south west of Manjil City and west of Loshan, northern Iran. Talesh-Western Alborz volcanic belt was formed by the subduction of Neotethys ocean toward north. However, some researchers believe that the continental rift is responsible for its formation. Firstly, geological field trip was carried out and lithogeochemical samples were collected and prepared for chemical and mineralogical studies. Genetic pattern of the samples was also introduced based on the geochemical analysis and microscopic studies. Sirdan volcanic rocks (northern Iran) include pyroclastic and lava units. Lavas are basalt, andesite, trachyandesite, dacite and riolite. Pyroclastic rocks also consist of different kind of tuffs (lattice crystal tuff, halo lattice tuff, sandy tuff, clay tuff and tuffit), ignimbrite and breccia. Age of the formations belongs to tertiary (mostly Eocene to Oligocene). Basic lavas include olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase phenocrysts as well as opaque minerals and plagioclase and clinopyroxene microlite. The dominated texture of the samples is porphyritic microlite. Medium-silica lavas have plagioclase-pyroxene, alkali feldspar, and biotite and amphibole phenocrysts. They also have silica and feldspar microlite and the dominated texture is halo porphyritic. Acidic lavas consist of plagioclase, quartz and alkali feldspar phenocrysts with xenocryst of quartz, feldspar and silica with a dominated texture of porphyry with micro-granular and hyaline. Based on the geochemical analysis, the studied rocks are sub alkaline and tholeiitic. Pattern of rare earth elements shows a high contamination of magma with crustal surface. Finally, the tectonic situation of the studied samples have been introduced from mantle with a source of MORB toward the active marginal continental rift

Changes in blood glucose in diabetic patients during cataract surgery which manner is better?
Background: Surgery is a kind of trauma which Hemodynamic, metabolic and hormonal responses. Anesthesia and Analgesia can cause extra stress for body. blood glucose levels can be measured as an indicator of stress factors, Blood glucose rising in Diabetic patient is unpleasant. Method: 60 diabetic patients aged between 40 and 70 treated with oral glycemic agents that underwent elective Blood glucose level was scaled by BioNime GM 100 half an hour prior to anesthesia or sedation, exactly after anesthesia or sedation and after surgery. After OR admission, patients underwent standard monitoring like ECG, NIBP and pulse-oximetry. First group was anesthetize by Topical Anesthesia with Tetracaine and second group was anesthetized by Retrobulbar Block. Prior to anesthesia, in both groups, sedation was performed with 2mg Midazolam and 1 µgr/kg Fentanyl. For the third group, candidate for General Anesthesia, 1.5 mg/kg Propofol was administered for induction and 0.5 mg/kg Atracorium was used for preparing appropriate muscle relaxation before intubation. After successful tracheal intubation, patients were ventilated with Isoflurane on its maintenance dosage 1.5% V/V. Patients of 3rd group were extubated after surgery and the reverse of muscle relaxants. As mentioned, blood glucose level was assessed and recorded exactly after anesthesia, exactly after surgery and every 30 minutes after entering the recovery room. Result: In the group underwent General Anesthesia changes during surgery and after it are statistically significant (P<0.05). In groups underwent Retrobulbar block and Topical anesthesia no significant change in BS after anesthesia, during surgery or after it .no significant difference between blood glucose levels after anesthesia among three groups. changes in BS at the time of entering recovery room and 30 minutes after it are statistically significant in all patients The last measured BS, 30 minutes after recovery, was higher in patients under went general anesthesia than in other patients with topical anesthesia or Retrobulbar block . It means that in patients underwent general anesthesia, the rise of blood glucose level is not only higher but also more persistent. Conclusion: General Anesthesia impose more stress to patients than two other methods. the rise of blood glucose level is not only higher but also more persistent
